Salem, Massachusetts — “Witch City” and Halloween

About every year when the city of Salem, Massachusetts gears up the the late October and Halloween festivities there is a lot of media coverage. I have never gone to Salem around Halloween, although a friend and I did accidentally get caught up in the Salem traffic one Saturday.

I seldom see any media coverage of the other side of Salem’s witchy reknown — the ghastly and cruel Salem Witch Trials.

Perhaps I would not even notice or mind the frivolity if a respectful nod were given to the cruel history that has been gleefully overshadowed by the commercial partying. And if our family’s genealogy were not front and center for those family members who have also put our genealogical map together.

One of my great great … great aunts was a victim of the witch hunts. Years ago when I first became aware of this and was reading, I found myself in some serious tears.

I wonder how many people with no genealogical connection ever take a minute to pause and wonder about the juxtaposition of the colorful frivolity with the gruesome history of “Witch City.”
