Yesterday's Hike

Went on a hike yesterday at my favorite wildlife sanctuary. There is a nesting pair of Osprey there but the trails leading to the nesting pole are always closed so it's difficult to get good photos.

It was a beautiful day with lots of other photo ops ... White Pelicans, Black Phoebes, Yellowthroats, female and colorful male House Finches, a stunning black Grackle, Canada Geese, a gorgeous Great Blue Heron, various hummingbirds, ducks and marsh birds, butterflies, lizards and beetles.

Happy that the Osprey are nesting again but sad that I don't have a lens powerful enough to get good photos of it, I headed back to my car when what did I spy with my roving eye ... an Osprey sitting on a pole near the parking lot eating a large fish. Below are photos I captured of that stunning sight. I stood within five feet of the pole he was on.

Awesome pictures! Osprey are such amazing birds. Such an amazing site to see!

A few years back my husband got pictures of one off Lovers Key in South FL. He got the bird in full flight but one of the wings is partially out of frame. It's still a great picture; I'll try to dig it up and share it here.

So when you purchased another camera you bought a camera with interchangable lenses?

Yesterday's photo op. I think he is beautiful and he thought so too. This would be a male Chinese Mantis. He was every bit of 4 inches long.

Moni if you go to the fair grounds they have several huge flower bed areas filled with Miss Oklahoma pink cannas. Pick up the spent seeds in the bed and let them dry. Plant them next year and you will have some really beautiful cannas. My friend and I did that one year. We were at the fair sitting next to the cannas and decided to try it out. It was very successful. They are such a pretty color.

I bought a bunch of raw green peanuts yesterday and made boiled peanuts using my pressure cooker. First time doing it this way. Omg quick and easy and oh so delicious! I will have plenty to store in the freezer!

What a stunning bird. Looks like he really enjoyed his lunch. :o) I hope you'll also post the other photos, they sound wonderful.

Nicole, I did finally break down a buy a DSLR, a Canon EOS 60D. I have three lenses; 50mm, 17-55mm and a 75-300mm. I mostly use the 17-55mm but for the Osprey shots I used the 75-300mm.

I'll post more photos from yesterday's hike tomorrow and Friday.

Love this shot for eye intensity. :-)

Gorgeous shots!!

On our walk last nite, I couldn't help but think that this is the time of year when baby ducklings fall down the drain sewers :(

Every year some city workers go down and rescue them.

We just had a brood of nine ducklings pull from a sewer drain last weekend. Below is a pic of the officer who rescued them.

The sanctuary is about a ten minute drive from my home. It's open from dawn to dusk, though I've been there a few times after dark on bat walks and such. It's very cool to be there at dust with hundreds of crows come in for the evening to sleep. See link below for photos. When our KT Casey came to town three years ago I took her there.
