I couldn't believe what I was seeing.

I had a Q for the neighbor in the next apt. She invited me in and I couldn't believe all of the stuff she had in her Apt. Every wall was piled high with furniture, IE, dressers on top on dressers and tables, the sofa was almost int he middle of the room because she had plastic storage cases piled behind it. The one bedroom had floor to ceiling book cases filled with books and plastic cases of...who knows what, with more piled in front of the Book cases. There was just a small path one could walk through the Apt. It wasn't like on the show Hoarders, it all seemed to be....neatly piled, not piles of junk and garbage and she said she knows what is where and can lay her hands on it immediately if she needs it. The clutter was awful. Just having our livingroom full of boxes after the move for a week bothered me. When our Bldg manager stopped by for papers for us to sign, I mentioned this and she said it was doubtfull she will pass inspection later this spring. I like this gal and feel sorry for her.

That's like our former next-door neighbour.
I went in to see her one day and she had stainless steel racks lined up in her livingroom piled with tote boxes.

Everything was neat and orderly but there was only a path to walk through. Her bedroom was the same.

The landlord came with a contractor to inspect the balconies.
She reported this tenant to the fire marshall and he came and said her apt was a hazard. She either had to get rid of everything or move. She did both.....rented a locker and got a different apt.

This seems so common now, doesn't it? Some people are able to collect but are unable to let go of anything--just cannot do it. My DH is an example of this. As we get older, we are doing our families no favors by collecting stuff, and good for you Dot for keeping the "stuff" under control. My dear mother kept her belongings to a minimum, and it was still a lot to deal with when she died.

OMG Harryshoe - what a beautiful bush! Light peachy/apricot is my favorite rose color, so I have wanted Tamora for a while. Your pictures have inspired me as to what good care will do for this rose. I also am curious about her scent, which many love but some hate, evidently. Your garden looks immaculate too - sigh, I have much to strive for. Thanks to everyone who shares my joy over finding hidden treasures in the oddest places. Yes, I was not happy to find our expensive nurseries are just potting up bare roots - same thing we can do here - so while I will buy potted roses it is very rare I will pay full price. I could mail order but I usually only do that for specialty items, like minis and my one own root Lemon Spice (which hasn't performed all that well for $25). The few times I have struck gold at Walmart - the plant quality was impressive - I have a very nice "New Year" from them that has a delicious tangerine color (too bad it gets BS, but does re-leaf out fast.) Greenhaven, I am very intrigued by Ebb Tide, I would try her if I can find her cheap, some people here seem to think she is great - other times it seems her performance is unimpressive?

Hi Sharon, sorry to hear of this! I can speak from 18 months experience, I do hope they don't plant the bamboo. You might remember we bought the "bamboo house" in December 2011. I don't think they can neglect it enough that it would die - if that would work ours would have died from the previous owner's neglect. I've noticed leaving our old neighborhood in The Village recently that one house along Penn (north of the library, I think, on the east side of Penn) had planted bamboo all along the outside of their fence on Penn, and it was dead. And I thought "whew, that was lucky" and when I drove by the other day, it was greening up! Ugh! You don't need to do anything right away, but there may come a time that you might want to install a barrier. It can be acquired locally at Alligator Alley on 10th, it is about $3 per linear foot, and you need to dig 20-22 inches down and put it in at an angle to direct the bamboo rhizome's growth to the top level of the soil where you can see it and cut it off if needed. I believe a grove, once established, can send out runners equal to the height of the plants in the grove. Bamboo is a grass, so the 20-30ft tall grove in my backyard has sent runners easily 20-25 feet away. It's not such a big problem in the lawn area if you keep your lawn mowed, it will knock the bamboo down and prevent it from being established. If it's in a neglected lawn or flower bed, it can get real problematic, real fast. I will upload a few pics tomorrow when I can go out in the daytime and snap some. Bamboo grows over 1 foot per day, sometimes more. So DH might get into the previously neglected flower bed and cut the 'boo down to the ground and all will be fine. Less than one week later, there are 8-10 foot shoots in that place. They all need to be dug out, and the roots are tough and thick. We will be installing a barrier soon, to cut back on the amount of maintenance we have to keep up with on our 'boo during spring and fall shooting season.

I totally get the point vala55. What too many bicyclists and motorcyclists don't get is that right, wrong or otherwise, when they take on a 3000# vehicle, they're likely going to lose. And I think it's time to contact the lawmakers about the bike trailers with kids in them. For one thing you can't have people in a trailer behind a car - for cryin out loud you can't have someone in the back of a pickup! That should be illegal, if it isn't already. I had an incident last summer with a motorcycle with a baby trailer behind it weaving in and out of traffic. After all, cars are supposed to "look out" for motorcycles, right? They don't have to follow the rules of the road. (ARGH!) I'll say it again. I miss winter. I miss the snow and ice now. At least we didn't have too many of these issues to deal with. Spring has sprung and the buffoons have blossomed.

Hi Greg!! This only took about five weeks to root!! It was very fast for me!! We had the heat and the humidity ., I also keep them in the greenhouses on a seedling heat mat!! Very hot here!!! Thank you!!! Lol Emily!! I had to work up to this decision....I'm glad I just " did it". I though about it all season.. Finally bit the bullet!! Lol!! It hurt tho !!! I collected dolls for 20 years and went to many homes like that. Some were unbearable because of the litter boxes and musty smells of old books and papers. I guess they would fall into the category of hoarders, but not extreme. That is one of the reasons I started going through my home getting rid of clothes I had not worn in a couple of seasons, paper back books anything that I didn't use but have kept. it sure made house cleaning easier, nothing under beds or on closet floors.

I couldn't live like that. I would rather have a dusty dirty type house than one with a lot of clutter. I clean constantly and could get rid of the dirt but the clutter would drive me nuts. My sewing room is always a mess and it gets on my nerves and from time to time I just stop everything and get it organized again.

Happened to a now "across the miles" friend of mine just about this time last year. A routine trip to the doctor found her on the spot hospitalized for a quintuple bypass... do not pass go, do not collect.

To make a long saga short - her two bedroom apartment in the independent living section of a senior complex was a true warren of furniture, boxes, stuff, chock-a- block, floor to ceiling. I knew how much stuff there was initially because she moved before I did and 5 of us friends worked every day for a month to help pack up all this cr@p. And I'd been back on trips on a couple of occasions only to see that the problem had grown exponentially.

Before completing her rehab, social workers, occupational therapists, the fire marshall, and complex authorities went in and cleaned it all out putting everything in rental storage units. The place was definitely a hazard - to her and the entire building - and she wasn't given time limits to correct the situation.

With the noteriety of the Hoarders programs, and doing a lot of reading, I might have a small glimmer of insight into what started her down this path.

There but for the grace of God...

That was an up close and personal life lesson for me - I feel pretty confident I will not leave a mess when I go.
