Speaking of Recipes

My Mom passed away in January. Friday I found an envelope in a drawer full of her recipes, including 5 hand-written recioes for her Christmas cookies. I cried when I found them, and made two recipes for dinner that night, her grilled chicken Caesar salad and banana pudding recipes. I am putting all of them in a safe place. My "favorite", vesides the cookies, is her recipe for canned tomaroes . She called it "Simple Tomatroes" . You skin whole tomatoes, pop them in a jar, add lemon juice and salt, process 10 minutes. Simple indeed.

Mother had special drawers with her saved recipes. My sister got them, but I do have her coconut 3 day refrigerator cake on index cards in her handwriting. Plus an index card in her handwriting re: waffles and club soda!

Linda, that stuff was soooo good. Everyone was hovering around the kitchen bar scooping this stuff up like gold nuggets. Me, I thought I'd be sly and hide that last bit in the fridge to secretly devour later...well, after getting home from the garden tours on Monday I went to have a snack, there was the container in the fridge....EMPTY!! I think Jan ate it up behind my back! That tiny lil thing was going "it ain't hot, it ain't hot"! Whaaaaa I loved the way the heat grew on you and it was such a crunchy fresh taste of corn, peppers and onion. Absolutely YUM O! Do you want me to send your empty container back to you? Did you get the lid? Or is that my container...lol See I burned some brain cells, too! Speaking of recipes...thre rum cake was absolutely CHOCOLATE DECADENCE! WOW! So rich and yummy, my guys are loving the last bits of morsels. Evas bean salad was so fresh and wonderful! I loved the combination of the different beans textures. Then MsMarions cookies, brownies and Blue Berry Muffins. The choc chips with Macadamia nuts were out of this world...I say "were" since my guys scooped the up the last ones and even ate all the crumbs. Lady's Sangria made my toes curl. That is good stuff babe! Thank you everyone for such delicious foods! We gardeners know not just how to garden but how to eat well too!

Carol, I just knew when you said you'd never had maple cream, that it was the perfect surprise. I love the stuff, on hot scones, on pancakes, even just on toast. Of course, I never met anything with maple I DIDN'T like. I hope the cookbook gives you a smile or two. I'm sure you could use Oregon shrimp instead, LOL, but check out the nachos topped with fruit and fudge! I do hope things are getting a bit more "boring" for you. Chin up, my friend. Annie

I find stout has more of an unsweetened coffee taste. (At least Guinness does--there are sweeter varieties, but unless the recipe specifies a different type of stout like sweet stout or milk stout, you can assume they meant Guinness or something similar) That's from the addition of roasted unmalted barley to the mix. That adds 'roastiness' without adding any fermentable sugars. Guinness actually has fewer carbs than some mass market beers. It marries very well with beef and lamb, both in the dish and in a glass--if the wine list doesn't seem very good, I'll often have Guinness with the meal.

Alexa, my good friend with whom we all had Thanksgiving last year moved to Hollywood this summer. Two of her daughters, my two children, and two of the children of our mutual friend are also either in Southern CA or closer to Hollywood than here. So it's been decided that we will all meet there for Thanksgiving. The guest list is now at about 20. Her charming but smallish Hollywood Dell home will be bursting at the seams. The division of labor isn't completely decided but we have concluded that it will be simpler to order a couple of turkeys from a market in her neighborhood than to try to cook turkeys and all the trimmings. Several of us will stay in a hotel near her. I will cook a small turkey ahead of time to have drippings and broth for stuffing (Silver Palate Grand Marnier Stuffing) and gravy. I will make both ahead of time. The stuffing I will assemble and freeze to be baked there. The gravy I will make a day ahead but not freeze. My gravy is basic, a roux from turkey drippings and some butter and flour to which I add turkey broth and white wine. Whisk like crazy. I make Silver Palate Thanksgiving potatoes which are sacrosanct in our family. I am extra excited because I invited an old friend from boarding school to join us. I haven't seen her since we were 17. She moved from Wisconsin to Scottsdale this month and is game to come to Hollywood for Thanksgiving with her daughter who is 18. The spare turkey I make here will become Thanksgiving dinner for my house bound ex. He is learning to cook and can make his own sides. So dat's da plan.

Everytime I pick up something with Mom's handwriting I get such a warm feeling. She came from the old school of penmanship and it is so distinctive (early 1900's)

My Mom had very beautiful, distincting handwriting. She was left handed and actually won a penmanship award in grammar school.

My mother also had very pretty handwriting. When she passed 2 years ago, I got her recipes. I had typed most of them for her on index cards, but there were quite a few in her handwriting (which I cherish). She was an exceptional cook.

I typed all of her recipes; printed them two-to-a-page, and put them in spiral notebooks for my father and brother. That way, I know they won't be lost, but can be passed down to future generations.

I love my mom's recipes. Some are written on used envelopes or bank deposit slips. They make me miss her. She was a fabulous cook!

My late mother-in-law also passed on some special hand-printed recipes to me; family favorites of cholent (a kind of beef roast) and kugel (a noodle custard dessert). They are in my recipe box and bring back fond memories when I read them.

Janie, my most treasured possession is an old drugstore notebook, taped together and stained. It holds my grandma's favorite recipes written by her hand, but mostly written by my dear great aunt.

I keep telling myself I should write more things by hand. I have good handwriting, but would rather use a keyboard. Print on a computer screen would evoke the same warm feeling, though.

I don't remember my mom using recipes to cook - here 'recipes' were from memory and trial and error, if I remember CORRECTLY! LOL I'm 61, so the memory gets dimmer by the day!

I have a ton of my Mom's recipes, too. She wrote all of them and included who gave it to her. Lots of small clips cut from magazines and do you remember when there used to be a paper with recipes in your flour bag. I have a ton of them, too. Love going through them..

My mom never used recipes either.

She raised a large family and was a great cook. There are some things I can never get to turn out right like hers. One is fried cabbage!

My Mom was an excellent cook and a great baker.In Boston for many many years there was a radio program that was made up of home cooks that called in and shared their recipes.It was on for 2 hours everyday and my Mom would fill notebooks with these recipes.She made many and would write comments about how good or not so good the recipe was.
These notebooks go back to the 70's and 80's and the show was on for over 26 years.
Lucky for us my sisters and I have them now.
