Using Stout in a Recipe

On the cover of this month's Canadian Living magazine is a slow-cooker stew. It looks delicious and calls for Stout Beer. The gravy is very dark and rich.

Neither of us is a beer drinker (DH is a non-drinker at all). Should I try to see if I can buy a bottle of stout? Would the taste be too prominent and we may not like it? Is there anything else I can use?
