well i see the results! not in the hummers since theya are sleeping when i get to work, but i do see the feeders. the 1 to 3 doesn't appear to have been touched since i put the 1 to 1 up. in one day,it is at least half gone- a little over 16 oz. capacity. as for home, my little hummer can't eat that fast. but, it guards the feeder from the second one nearly all day. there are several feeding at the work feeders. the most hilarious thing i just saw: as the hummer was perched on the clothesline it kept flinging, and i do mean flinging and flipping, that long tongue out. too funny. then, i realized it was preening. hmmmmm, lots of critters? another thought has been bugging me. i see them perched jerking their heads in all directions, pointing the beaks up, and some throat movements. could be all territorial displays, but i really wonder if they are singing outside of our hearing range.

When you look at how much garbage goes into kibble and how unpalatable the stuff is, I am not surprised your dog wants people food - but you don't want it to turn into begging either. You are the alpha dog, your puppy gets fed after you! (either literally or figuratively) Since you asked "what should I feed my puppy?" I will tell you my opinion, at the risk of starting a debate. I suggest you buy and read the book I am putting in the link box at the bottom - "Natural Nutrition for Dogs and Cats" - Kymythy Schultze She advocates a species-appropriate diet, of raw, unprocessed foods. In the dog's case, pretty much total avoidance of carbohydrates which is argued to be causing the huge increase in diabetes in dogs. I am not a fanatic about such things but my dog developed severe gastric issues after being spayed, she could not keep anything down, and it got worse and worse. In the end all she could keep down was rice, protein powder and chicken broth, and, as a puppy, she was losing weight and going backwards. We found this book and connected the dots. I had already wondered about a raw diet, when I lived in Australia the BARF diet was well-accepted (Bones And Raw Food) and we looked at it again. We haven't cured her, if she eats anything 'chunky' she tends to throw it up, but she is otherwise in perfect health (when I get a chance I will post the situation in this forum and see if anyone has any ideas) and is doing well, at age 3. Her weight stays very consistent and she has plenty of energy. We buy the food - well the meat anyway - as a prepared "sausage" which contains whole food - ground bones, organ meat and meat. We add veges to it to simulate the stomach contents of the prey, as it were, a wild dog would eat the whole rabbit, entrails included. Her droppings are firm and not at all objectionable, and a fraction of the size of her BFF, our neighbour's dog who is literally about a tenth of her size, yet poos more and larger than hers, evidence I guess of the filler. It's not a cheap diet, we also give her a salmon oil extract and whole raw eggs (shell and all, also a species-appropriate thing) and I guess we spend about $150 CDN a month (and we get a discount) feeding her, but I am convinced she would not have survived otherwise. When we can afford it we may look at getting her x-rayed whilst swallowing, about the only other thing the vet thought we could do - when she first had the issue they gave her an endoscopy which showed a lot of inflammation of the oesophagus which the vet thought might have been caused by reflux happening from her hiatus valve being too relaxed by the anaesthetic. I have MANY quilts that my mom has made. (She is a quilter.) Maybe I need her to make one especially for Dexter. But not on the couch. For a long time I have so enjoyed all the furbaby pictures. We have not had a furbaby in our hosue for a really long time. Sow now that we have Dexter, I feel like I'm part of the club! Today we took Dexter to the dog park. My first time ever being at a dog park. And I loved every minute. I even suggested we get a lab puppy in a couple of years and DH agreed! Yes, Dexter has pulled at our heart strings. But Harry pulled at them first. I've always told Caroline how much we love Harry photos. My daughter LOVES Harry so whenever there was a Harry picture, I'd show her. Thank you, Caroline! Sheryl

My sincere condolences for your loss. Harry seemed like such a sweet dog. Somehow, even knowing "it's time", doesn't make the heartache any less. I'm glad that Harry always liked visiting the vet, so that his last moments were not made unnecessarily unpleasant. With Spot a couple of years ago, he hated going to the vet. He had been there twice in the preceding few days as we tried to see whether anything could be done for his back injury and he shook in fear the whole time we were there. Fortunately my wife got a recommendation for a local vet who would make house calls when "it's time".
