Bumper training in the back yard. No, Sam isn't really being choked!

See our version of "Spring?" The grass is almost green, and it thawed enough we finally got all of last fall's leaves into the compost bin.

The kennel cage will be moved to the other side of the yard. After Sam has finished his bumper training, it will be divided and made into a two-part compost bin to replace the temporary one we made last spring.

Sam, 5 months old.

Sam is such a sweet and calm puppy. He really tries (and sometimes succeeds!) to be good. He is a quick learner. Harry was, and is, and ADD puppy on acid. Harry learns very quickly, but he also reevaluates the situation to see if we are doing things the way he thinks they should be! LOL

Sharing a morning sunbeam on the dedicated "Dog Lounger".

I've removed the baseboards in the living room to prepare for painting and installing the built-in window seat. It will be flanked with two narrow cabinets with bookcase tops, and a wide coat/broom closet. I though this set-up would be an efficient use of this 30-inch wide, 12-foot long strip of dead space.

My heart!

I love Sam dearly, and he's a good little puppy, but Harry, the big galoot, fills my heart.

Our new furbaby, Dexter, says hi to Sam and Harry! Here he is, on the couch even though he's not supposed to be there.

"Of course he's supposed to be there," according to Harry. Look how he just "fits."

He might need a little blankie to keep him warm, though. Any time Harry curls up in a ball on the lounger, I put a thick bath towel over him. He loves to be snuggly.

It drive DH crazy! (All the better reason to do it, huh?)

Is it a Martha Washington type geranium? It looks very intriguing, although I normally don't do geraniums... unless they're the perennial type for the garden, or a few zonals for patio pots. It's really got nice leaves, though! Thanks for the offer of AV leaves, Kristi... unfortunately, I never have luck starting them from leaves. I've currently got just one AV, and it's not doing well, at all! I tried to cure a long neck, and it just got worse. I think it's about nearing time to throw it on the compost pile... if I can't get this thing to root properly once spring arrives, it's a goner. I will say that for a long time, it bloomed wonderfully for me, and it made the move from up north quite well, but once it became too tall in its pot, I knew it was only a matter of time... they're just not plants that do well for me, though they are very lovely. I've read everything I can about rooting cuttings, and I've followed every instruction I found or was told... they just don't like me! I'll post a photo of my poor little guy when I put up the next batch of pictures... you'll see what I mean! Technically, I should be able to get two plants out of this one, but I know what will happen... they'll both die. It's inevitable.

A plant list, hmmmm, maybe next week when I'm not as busy. Kristin, the magenta dahlia is Formby Royale. It's my favorite, the color is always perfect and they have long, strong stems. I hope I never lose it one winter. Moonphase, the bed is about 50 feet long and 9 feet wide. I actually started by placing some small trees and dwarf conifers for winter interest. Then I made of list of whatever plants I had in dark purple, rose pink, light and dark violet. Then I place them starting with biggest, then favorites, and then fillers. Then rearrange the plan 10 times. Hopefully this will stop the 10 times of rearranging when they are in the ground :-) Weeds? In early summer I try to mulch everything once with finely ground wood chips. I never get it all done. That really takes care of most weeds. The second way I deal with them is by being tolerant of them. I always have weeds popping up later, and I do "spot weeding" if things get out of hand. (like spot cleaning) But mostly I just don't have time to keep my gardens immaculate, and a few weeds here and there are part of my gardening style. ShaSha - I buy lots of seed started plants in tiny 4-packs, 4 for $1. (delphiniums, lobelia, hibiscus, etc) Then I grow them out in my working garden, so that after a year I will know what color they are, and can place them accordingly. Memo - what am I working on this year? Too much!! Peony bed to line the front driveway. I actually prepared the bed and moved the peonies last fall from my working garden. But I still need to give the bed edges - brick mow-strip on the lawn side and low stone wall on the driveway side. And of course I need to plant all around the peonies . . . circular veggie garden I prepared the soil last year by adding and tilling truckloads of manure. Now I'm laying out paths with the same fieldstone and going to plant it up. It's more than a veggie garden, it will also be a cutting garden and tree nursery and propagation bed. I'm moving some of my working garden to here. barn bed Flowers to be seen from a bit of distance. Yellows and whites, golds and oranges. I've got a plan, just need to find time to implement it. front bed Last fall I finally decided on the shape of the front beds and laid a brick edge for mowing. ( a tedious, laborious job that took a really long time and one that I need to repeat for the peony bed, heavy sigh ...) Now I need to completely rearrange that bed, and plant it up. I don't have a plan yet, for some reason the front of the house stumps me. Too many projects. . . and then I need to maintain them all! Next winter I should post photos of these new flower beds.

Well, they are tidier anyway. So many of the spring flowers had turned brown in this heat and looked just awful! Upon cleaning them out, I also removed the hiding places for insects, so was a double bonus for my efforts. :) I had the prettiest white Baby's Breath this spring. With the deep blue Larkspurs, and the pink and orange roses, I had bouquets growing right in the flower beds. That lasted through May and into early June and then this heat hit all at once, and they croaked! (Sigh) I'm still revamping things. Last night, I dug up my big Needlepoint Holly and moved it down into the back of the daylily bed. Everything that was or is growing up on the hill is getting moved down closer to the house where the soil is deeper and the yard is cooler. I am tired of trying to make that old dry hill bloom! There is a Fairy Rose, the Variegated Willow, some Sweet William, Mums, and other things up there yet to remove. I have moved about half of the flowers and plants already. All are doing really well since I moved them. There is a small Liquidambar styraciflua 'Sweet Gum' tree to be dug up today and potted until I can figure out where to plant her. She looks so pitiful right now. Gotta move her before she dies! She needs a lot more moisture and that was just such a fool's errand to think that I could make it work up there. You live and learn. I lost the clump of Tennessee River Birch and two of the South Carolina Red Maples that I ordered several years ago. They were so pretty and growing really well. The River Birches died last winter and the dad gum drought and heat got two of the Red Maples. ~Annie

I did look up Drawn Butter, and it's awfully cute. A small golden with good texture. Then I looked for a hosta named lobster or langostino or Alaskan King Crab, just to see if I could make a yummy pairing. (I must have been hungry ;). No luck on those. If someone gets a seedling with really red petioles maybe they would consider those names.

What a sweet duo! I imagine there is lots of happy times with those two around. They make me grin too.

Just look at Sam's whiskers!!! That is just beyond cute.
Harry is just so.....dad gum cute! I agree, Harry just pulls at the heart strings when I see a picture of him. Harry just looks loving, like he could just lick you to death.

LOL about Harry-he strikes me the same way! Sparky and Dexter have the same mindset about the couch! Sparky is also learning not to go on the bed when DH is home. Here he is relaxing in his doggie lawn chair.

I have MANY quilts that my mom has made. (She is a quilter.) Maybe I need her to make one especially for Dexter. But not on the couch.

For a long time I have so enjoyed all the furbaby pictures. We have not had a furbaby in our hosue for a really long time.

Sow now that we have Dexter, I feel like I'm part of the club!

Today we took Dexter to the dog park. My first time ever being at a dog park. And I loved every minute. I even suggested we get a lab puppy in a couple of years and DH agreed!

Yes, Dexter has pulled at our heart strings.

But Harry pulled at them first. I've always told Caroline how much we love Harry photos. My daughter LOVES Harry so whenever there was a Harry picture, I'd show her.

Beautiful dogs - all of them.

Caroline, when we all go to bed at night Loki sleeps on his bed on the floor at the foot of my bed. He always gets covered with his "blankie" and he keeps it on for most of the night. Sometimes he will get up and the blanket stays on him and he looks like a horse draped in a blanket. LOL
