bathroom vanity (pics) Help!!

We are in the midst of getting our basement finished (yay!) after 6 long years of waiting! Funny how I thought in my head I knew exactly what I wanted and now that the time is here for final decisions, I'm freaking out! I have to decide by tomorrow!!

It's going to be a fairly small bathroom, with a 30 in vanity at the max. A commode and a 4 foot glass shower. Not a lot of dancing room. We have kids, and they and their friends will be playing in the basement, so it needs to kid friendly (nothing too expensive that I will worry about).

I'm thinking of a lighter blue/gray for the walls. The toilet will be white. White door. Since it's a small room, do I go with a white vanity as well? I'm picturing white. There will not be much room for another cabinet in the room, so I'm thinking of going with this vanity: below in link.

I love this cabinet, b/c it gives the drawer on the bottom to be able to store bath towels for any showering guests without me having to have something else in the room to store them in.

So my problem is this: It doesn't come with a top. And I'm clueless! I don't want to spend a ton of $$, but I want it to be nice and look like it goes together. Do I stick with a basic white top? With a browning color? I don't know the first thing about vanity tops. Help!!!

Have you seen that vanity in person? It doesn't look like the bottom drawer is very deep so I don't know that you could store a bath towel in there. It is a nice looking cabinet and having the drawers is a great idea.

What about something with a few drawers and then an open bottom shelf. Along this line

What color is the floor? I might take the vanity top cue from that. I would be inclined to do a dark grey if you go with a white cabinet, or a black and white granite look.

I agree that I don't see you getting even one bath towel in that lower drawer. You might be able to stack some in the cabinet side on the left, tho.

How often would guests be staying down there and showering? I would think you could do something like this above the toilet:

Thanks for the input everyone. I'm trying to avoid having to put more money in to this than I really have to. I'd like to avoid changing the door to the closet if need be. JustJulie-The only problem with removing that wall would be it has electrical switches on it, possibly outlets too, can't remember. Wonder how easily that could be moved, but then again, where would you move it? Probably wouldn't do a pocket door to get in. Makes too much noise and I'm a light sleeper and would hear DH closing it to get ready for work at 3am. I'd probably do a door like we have now, glass panel, like a Frehch door, I guess it's called? We put a mini blind on the backside for privacy and so you can't see the vanity through the glass. I haven't worked on any type of configurations but I don't think there's a hell of a lot that can be done to change it around and I don't want to get too crazy as I'm trying to keep the costs down. LIVE WIRE-not sure we could remove other wall, that right side of the doorway is where the plumbing is, so when you look at the tub, the faucet is on the left side, not the right where I wish it would be. I can't remember if there is any wall space to the left of the tub, but I take it there has to be something there for the plumbing to be. And as I mentioned above, the right side of the wall has electrical inside. I'd definitely like to have the toilet area "privatized". I'd really like to keep it to one sink, we just don't need two and I'd much rather have a place where I can sit down and do my hair/make-up as I have now. Currently I have my vanity where the left side has a drawer and space for a chair underneath that I can sit at, a bank of drawers and then the sink with a cabinet underneath. I also think about one less sink to clean and one less pipe to unclog. Now, a linen cabinet, that would be a nice addition in there. When I saw the house last, I took some measurements. The outside vanity is 44" wide and the inside vanity is 29" wide. I think the length of the bathroom is 8'2" with the floor space between the vanity and the outside of the tub being 5'. I didn't take the measurement of the outside vanity area from where I'd put the door to the back of the wall where the vanity is. I can't believe I'm having such a hard time finding a floor plan/layout on the web that's similar. I'm going through magazines, books, websites and nothing yet. Pray that I get this house!!!

I get the impression that you're doing this work yourself? And that HD's granite tops are 49" wide and you only have a 48" space? If you have a circular saw, you can buy a diamond blade and use it to cut an inch (or as required) off the left edge of the slab. More info to follow if you're interested.

Thanks for the advice. Believe it or not, you can actually get 4 or so bath towels in the drawer. The drawer is the same size as the cabinet, so it's about 30 by 22 or so.

I had seen it in person last week, and actually ended up purchasing it yesterday, mostly b/c we had tons of other items we needed, so HD gave us a 15% discount. The amount it saved us, meant that, in my head, we bought the whole vanity (top included) for $100! :) (Rather than the $400 it would have been!)

I like the towel rack as well, Les. We won't have a ton of company ever staying at one time (it's usually my parents for a few days here and there). So it will be able to store enough so that I won't be running up to the 2nd floor to get towels for basement guests (not that I couldn't use the exercise!) lol
