Stop. Dogs think pee and poop is wonderful, so maybe she's telling you she loves you. Not. Dogs do not have accidents as payback. They are NOT stupid humans. You need to go back to housetraining 101. But the peeing could be a urinary track infection which causes pain and it's hard to hold it. Take her to the vet. The excitement of the holidays and lots of foot traffic, loss of schedule can also cause set backs. And how cold is it where you are? Does she have a sweater? Are you walking her to get her bowels moving? Throwing her out in the yard doesn't work if its cold.

I have gone back to housetraining 101. She is being obstanant. Yes animals do do things as payback, I have seen it with my own eyes as well as hearing other peoples experiences. Not only by urinating or defacating in the house, but by ignoring or being spiteful.
Exactly, they are NOT stupid as I said in my first post. My first thought was that she is doing this because I left her home for 4.5 hours on xmas eve when I went to visit family. My husband was home with her, but it is the longest she has ever been away from me. Normally its no more than 1-2 hrs.
I don't throw her out in the yard, I leash her and walk around with her. SHe has her fav spots to pee and poop in the yard, and normally goes str8 to them and does her business. She does not have a urinary tract infec. PEEING IS NOT the problem..its the pooping everywhere, especially the crate!
As I said in my first post..even with the holidays, she has stayed on schedule. Like I said, hubby was with her while I was gone xmas eve..we stayed home xmas day, only 3 visitors.

You indicated she was having accidents and used the example of her peeing (not pooping) on your coat. At this point, I'll recommend that you see a behaviorist since you are not open to advice given on this forum. Usually paying for advice results in more attention and willingness to understand dog behavior and work with the dog.

Why does this have to turn into an attack on the poster? She's asking for help and getting attacked for it? Why would the dog be urinating AND pooping if it had a urinary tract infection. The dog does not have to go to the vet just because it's peeing and pooping in the house...that's what puppies do. If it's eating and acting fine, then all I see no reason for alarm.

Daniella, I completely agree with you that puppies and dogs can be manipulative and do things just to get at you! After reading your post, it's obvious that you are a good dog owner and I'm sure you're trying to do everything right. But sometimes the right stuff doesn't work! So I would try different things.

First, can you try and make the crate a tad bit smaller? I know you were worried about her not being able to turn around, but is the crate maybe a little too big? You don't have to put a board exactly halfway in there....just cut off a little bit of space. Also, when/if you catch her in the act, make sure you give her a VERY assertive and low-pitched "NO" - make her *feel* your disappointment. Then pick her up immediately and take her outside to show her that's where she should be doing it.

Try taking her out as often as you possibly can, and don't go back inside until she poops. Make a name for pooping, like "hurry up", so that she associates that phrase with you wanting her to go poop. If you are relentless about staying outside until she goes, then she'll eventually poop out there. Whenever she poops or pees outside, praise her like CRAZY, and give her a treat.

If she goes to the bathroom inside and you catch it after it happens, there is nothing you can do - she has already forgotten that she did it (don't put her nose to it or yell at her - I'm sure you don't, but just thought I'd throw that in).

Once she realizes that it's NOT a game and that you are the "alpha dog", she will want to please you. This breed is very smart, maybe TOO smart! Good luck and have a happy new year.

Definately sounds like housebreaking 101 all over again. I agree that you need to take her out more often, and keep her out until she does everything you want her to. Praise like crazy (I read once that if the neighbors don't think you're nuts, then you aren't praising enough ;-). My dog gets her last outside of the night right before I go to bed.

When she is in the house with you, tether her to you if she is loose. Make the crate smaller, if that doesn't work then the crate is useless for overnights. Wrap her leash around your arm when you sleep and just have her sleep next to your bed. Are you cleaning up after her with a product like Nature's Miracle? As long as the odors are there from her last time, she will use that area again.

18 weeks old is way to young to think they will be reliable, even if she was initially ahead of the curve.

LOL, and as far as your post's title - I came home from work yesterday to cat vomit on the sofa and then found more on my bed. I was asking the same question while loading the bedspread and slip covers in the washing machine.

It sounds like you nearly had her potty trained, she was bringing you the leash and ringing the bell, but then she had a relapse. Which is typical, especially for her age...

I would be concerned about the amount of pooping, you described a scenario where the dog pooped several times in a certain time period? and the stools were loose... perhaps she is having some intestinal problems... its not uncommon for puppies to require multiple de-wormings or something like coccidia could require more potent meds...not uncommon for puppies... and something like that would make it hard for the dog to ask to go out before it happens.

If the dog is pooping in the crate, then the crate is too large or the dog is sick...

And what is your feeding schedule? Limit the pups access to food, don't free feed. That will put the digestion system on a a more predictable schedule.

And of course, she is a pup, massive patience is going to be required on your part.

I am already doing what you advised, and have been from the beginning, the low toned assertive "NO. No, poopoo in the house" then take her str8 outside, and tell her "PooPoo outside" but since she's already gone, I know she's not gonna do it again. But I still do take her to her spot outside, and tell her repeatedly, "PooPoo outside".
Before this all started, normally I'd take her out and tell her "Do PeePee" she'd do it. I'd tell her "Do PooPoo" she'd do it. (Well, I still do, lol) When she does poop outside I praise her, tell her "Good girl do PooPoo outside, good girl" I give her treats, play with her, as I have from the beginning. Same system as with the peeing. What else can I do?
I think my first dog spoiled me with the fact that he was completely housetrained in 24 hrs. Now I am having a rude awakening, lol.
The thing that bothers me is that the pooping in the crate just started monday night. I am going to try n rig it up today to make it smaller and hopefully it will help.

Kat, thank you also for your input. I also take her out for the last time right before I go to bed. Which is at 8pm usually, And she wasnt pooping in the crate. Now that she has started this, I take her out again at 9 pm maybe 10. Last night I had to wake her up to take her out, yet she still pooped twice in her crate last night.
I was having her sleep in my bed with us the first few weeks, but then as soon as she got big enough to jump off the bed by herself, she started poopin on the floor before we'd get up. Thats why I started putting her in the crate at night, it was a slow adjustment, but then she was fine with it, and goes right in when told, and wasn't poopin in there.
I'm not so sure about the leash around the wrist at night though..she could get tangled up, or strangle me or hubby in our sleep, lol. Also in the middle of the night my 3yr old always winds up in my bed. I wouldnt want her getting strangled.
I havent been using Nature's Miracle, I have been using Clorox wipes. I should get some NM though.

Joe, no, its not loose stools. Its normal, she just tromps all through it and gets it all over the place..including the ceiling of the crate, the door..its so hard to clean poop outta all those lil squares of metal, lol.
I do not free feed her, she eats at 8:30 am and again at 3pm. She normally finishes her food in one sitting, but when she doesn't I will leave it for no more than 10 mins then take it away. Of course she does get teh occasional piece of food she's stolen from one of the kids, lol. She's already surfing the counters, and actually tried to take a running leap yesterday to get onto the kitchen counter. I yelled "Daisy NO" while she was in mid air and she tried to stop, lol..wound up slamming into the cabinets and counter edge, but she was fine.
ANyway, yes I was so excited she was ringing the bells, and bringing the leash..now this. Back to square one, and am going to make the crate smaller..Should be interesting..I see zip ties in my furture, lol.
I always check her poop for worms, and have never seen any.
Last vet visit her poop was checked for the 2nd time, and everything was good, that wasnt even 2 weeks ago. She's never had worms to begin with.
She's 30 lbs already, so her poop isnt small anymore, I think thats what makes it so big of a mess. Like I said, its not loose, I find pieces of poop in her blankets still intact yet smushed..and then theres just chunks everywhere, smeared and just yucky..you get the pic, lol.

You know, Cynthia, I just saw your last little comment, and I just have to point out a few things. This is NOT a debate forum...if you are looking to argue and debate, there is an animal forum for that.

If you look at the OP's last line ("BTW This is NOT my first dog"), it's pretty obvious that she was afraid people would go into attack mode right away, which is exactly what you did. You mentioned "loss of schedule" and "holiday traffic" - well, the OP specifically stated that the schedule was the same, and never mentioned anything about a big holiday get together. Seems like you are not thinking, but instead you are throwing out all the possible things the OP could be doing wrong. Could it be that she just NEEDS ADVICE??

Well, if you know how to read, you'd know that she said that as an example of the dog getting back at her. If you actually READ the post, you would've seen ALL these references to the actual issue, which is POOPING, not peeing:

"SHe peed outside, refused to poop"
"5 mins later she pooped in there"

I hope we can TRY to get out of attack mode and actually HELP people on this forum. That's what it's for, isn't it? I understand that some of the posts here show complete ignorance from the poster (i.e., pet owner), and we have no choice but to be stern with the poster....but not in THIS situation AT ALL.

I'm glad you are planning on making the crate smaller. I really think that will help a lot. I also think that you should try and forget about how well she was doing before (as hard as that is!), and pretend like you are housetraining her for the very first time. That will help you to avoid frustration.

The other advice I have is to limit the amount of words you use when praising or being assertive with her. This may confuse her right now. Instead of saying "NO. No, poopoo in the house", I would just say "NO" - that should be much more effective than a whole sentence. In the same sense, instead of saying "Good girl do PooPoo outside, good girl" when she goes poo, just say "GOOD GIRL" in a high-pitched and excited voice, in addition to petting her and acting very happy. Again, the long sentence and all those words won't mean anything to her - it's the fact that you are getting all excited after she poops that will show her she did something great.

Good luck and I'm sure it'll get better.

Adding to gabro14's advice, if you say the words "... poo-poo" when you scold her and "... poo-poo" when you praise her, no matter what other words you add to the sentence, it could be confusing to her doggie brain.

I agree with gabro14's suggestion of simply saying "no" or "good girl" instead.

Also, someone needs to consistently let her out in the night to go potty, as she's too young to hold it that long.

Someone once said that if puppies weren't so darned cute nobody would want one, because of the whole housebreaking mess. Same with human babies, I suppose. But they grow up, they learn.

Hard for me to just say "good Girl", lol, as you can see from my posts..I kinda talk alot, and its hard for me to just say 2 words, lol. I have tried, and I always feel like she may not know why I am telling her she's a good girl, so I feel the need to elaborate. I know to her its all "blah blah blah blibbety blah", but theres something inside me that thinks she just may know what the heck I'm saying, lol. Like, if I say "boots", she just looks at me like "huh"? but if I say "go get my boots", she runs to them , and sometimes actually brings one.
Thank you again, for the advice, and for saying something to cynthia..I couldnt believe what she was saying, and thought maybe i was just taking it wrong. People really should learn how to read if they want to speak on a forum.

I can see with a 3 yr old that you don't want to do a tether at night. Is the crate next to your bed so you can hear when the puppy wakes up and starts to move around? It may be more loss of sleep for you, but you need to be ahead of her.

For cleanup, Nature's Miracle or Simple Solution work best. You need to have a product with the enzymes to get rid of the odor that we can't smell, but our pets can. I believe Walmart also has a product that is very good, but I don't know its name off hand.

I stopped posting a couple of months ago after being attacked by members of this "community". I still lurk, though. It's disgusting, to me, that a few people control what can and can't be posted. Who made them the "response police"?

I don't understand the attack on Cynthia. She tried to address the question. If having had dogs before makes the poster an expert (not in need of advice),then why is she asking for help/advice?

I think joepye's suggestion points out the problem...........something is wrong for her to be pooping so much at night and making the crate smaller won't solve the problem. She probably has digestive/diet problems or the kids are giving her 'treats' that are upsetting her tummy at night.

You may also want to consider 3 small feedings a day vs 2 large ones and changing her diet. I've used certain dry foods that caused my dog to poop several times a day and also at night. After finding a better brand of dog food, he now only goes twice a day. Of course, pups go more often.

I have not changed her food, she has had the same food all her life. I give her the amount recommended on the bag. She eats Purina Puppy Chow, and as I said, always has. I was feeding her 3x a day, and went down to 2 a few weeks ago, because she just wasn't finishing it.
If the kids drop something or it is snatched out the 3 yr olds hands, its not something that would make her sick. We eat well, and my kids arent allowed any crap food. Things she may get from them would be fruit, veggies, an occasional bite of bread. Heres an example..about 20 mins ago, she got a couple bites of banana. As far as I know, thats not gonna hurt her?
By morning we'll know if making the crate smaller helps.

Noone said Cynthia couldnt post, we just pointed out she read incorrectly and she answered in a not so nice way. Seemed there was a bit of an attitude there, like she is the expert..when as a matter of fact, she was wrong.
I never claimed to be an expert, nor did anyone else claim I was an expert..obviously I am not, or I wouldnt be asking advice. But I am asking for advice from experienced people who can read..and understand what they read.

Annz, it's funny that you mentioned finding the right food and increasing feeding to 3X per day, because that's what I was thinking. But I see what Daniella is saying about the fact that the dog was fine with that same feeding schedule and food before this problem started. I would try dealing with housetraining first, and then see a vet or call one if nothing changes. But I remember that my pup was a mean lean poop machine when she was that old!

On the subject of finding the right food...I have been feeding my dog Nutro dry food for her whole life (9 years), and recently decided to switch to human grade dog food. I first tried Fromms, and her BM's were very soft and she pooped quite often. So I then switched to Wellness and it has gotten a little better, but still kinda soft (on occasion) and frequent. Both times, I switched her over gradually. I have taken her to the vet several times, and nothing is "wrong" with her that would be causing loose stool and frequent BM's. So it had me wondering why a higher quality food would be doing this??

She is a beautiful dog. My question would be how much exercise does she get? You stated you take her out on a leash. This is a hunting breed and they like to run.
Do you have a fenced area she can run and play? I tell my dogs "potty outside" and they run to the door. BUT they are not on a leash and can run and play and go to their spot.
I just think the twice a day feeding is enough and the times sound fine. I think if she got plenty of exercise, she would pretty much do her business outside. Also, dogs go where they smell their scent. If she goes in the crate, she may think in her puppy mind, it's OK to go there. When you clean the crate, after the mess is out, mix a little pure vanilla with water and wipe it down. This takes away the scent and does not leave an unpleasant odor that upsets the dog.
I do wish you the best as it is frustrating to have things going well and then bad. I am not an expert but I learned with the dogs through the years and thought I'd share the info with you.

Thanks again, Gabro. I don't plan on changing her food till she's done with the puppy food, and then as you did, I will do it gradually. Maybe one of the ingredients just isn't agreeing with her? Have you tried cooking up some plain white rice and mixing about 1/4 cup in with her food? I have always done this with my dogs. Firms em right up.

Lynn, thank you. Oh yeah she gets plenty of exercise, I have a fenced in yard and she runs alot. When I take her out to go potty she is on the leash, so she knows the difference between play time and potty time. If its nice out, not raining, I will let her off the leash when she is done with her business and have some more play time, but she does run more than just then. Another reason I have her on the leash to go potty is so I know where she poops, its easier to clean up than having to search the whole yard. I leave the current dropping and pick up the last one before that so theres always some there to mark her spot, but at the same time its always cleaned up..know what I mean?
She has her fav pee spot outside, and then unfortunately her fav poop spot is in my lily bed..which I will have to try to change so when spring comes my lilies arent poop lilies, lol.
I did a great deal of research before i decided on a breed, and a breeder, I know what I'm in for, lol. My other dog is also a hunting dog, and supposedly high energy, but not as much as GSP's. My other is a English Springer Spaniel, 4.5 yrs old.
Thank you for your info, and no, I dont expect advice from experts,lol.. just people with experience. As far as I am concerned personal experiences from a few people are better than 1 person's "expert" advice. That's why I'm here! :) Find out what works for others, gather up all advice, put it together and see what works.

Daniella, no advice from me. Just wanted to say I like the idea of separating time for "business" (pee and poop) and play by using a leash for the business. It should leave no confusion in little doggie brain about what he's there to do.

As far as dogs doing that out of spite, YOU BET THEY DO! I cared for SIL's dog in their home a few long weekends each summer when she had to be away for scheduled sporting events.
Dog already knew me so I'd just move in and carry on for her. All went well until one time I had a job conflict and we talked it over and decided it might be good for all concerned if the dog was introduced to a boarding kennel...just in case.

Well, her dogs were her life, so she found a wonderful place, checked it out thoroughly, and made several trips out there to get her used to it and the people. The dog was boarded Th. nite and I drove out Fri. after work to take her home. The first thing the dog did when we got home was crap on the dining room carpet! And she did that and peed off and on from then on whenever she had a mind to.

Wanted to chime in here. My black lab would do the same thing in the crate when a young pup, we had a large plastic one and cut a piece of plywood to make it just where he could laydown. Before the plywood we tried heavy cardboard and the dog thought we made him a potty room on the back side of the kennel :-( We used no towel or mat in there, and that fixed the problem. His littermate was trained in just a couple days though. Are you still having her ring the bell before taking her out to go?

I am a bit concerned with the number of poops per day. When we fed Iams or SD it was a ton of poop. Wellness decreased it by a bit, but going raw decreased it a ton.

Your dog is very cute but I understand your frustration. Nothing is worse than dog or cat poop and I have tramped in both..Natures Miracle works well on odors and I like the vanilla idea too. I think dogs can be spiteful. I had a greyhound who never had accidents of any kind in the house. She was never crated and had free run of the downstairs. I have an old house with very steep steps, so she never ventured upstairs. But when we left her alone in the house she would go to the furtherest place downstairs away from her bed.. which was the sunroon and leave a big steaming pile of poop. Now if that isn't vindictiveness...She NEVER did it when we were home or at night. There was a summer outdoor show where dogs weren't allowed. When we returned we found the poop. Next day we went back to the show, same thing when we came home. The third day we put her and her beds in the carriage house for the three or four hours we would be gone. She had water and food and it was cool. When we returned , she had chewed the antique window sills and the carriage house doors at the bottom. It cost us a bunch for a carpenter to fix everything.

What a pretty puppy. Good luck with her and please be patient. Training a puppy is not easy, but it is rewarding.

An 18 week puppy is still a tiny baby, and one who was separated from her mom at 7 weeks if I read your post correctly. That is a bit earlier than most would recommend.

18 week old pups are still babies so potty 101 is ongoing. She may not be fully reliable for several more weeks if not months. Physically she really may not be able to hold it as long as you would like. She is still a baby with a tiny bladder.

Potty 101 requires taking the pup out every 2 hours minimally, and certainly immediately after every meal and whenever she wakes after a nap. It is best to have her on leash for potty training. Walk her until she performs. Give her a verbal cue to potty and give her huge praise when she does so. You will soon have her going on command. I agree with the potty before play recommendation above.

Never scold for accidents indoors, just clean them up thoroughly with an enzyme cleaner. Why? Because the accident was not her mistake. It is yours. You have not anticipated her needs. Scolding her will likely have her not wanting to potty in front of you anywhere and hiding out of your sight to go potty indoors. You don't want that. Really.

The smaller the crate environment the less likely the pup will soil it, but she should still be going out every couple of hours during the day.

Tethering to you also works. Rush her outdoors if she even seems about to squat. Always praise for pottying outside.

Hi I know how you feel about dogs, sometimes! I have a friend, a longtime breeder/trainer of service dogs. She tells me that dogs go through 'stages of mental, intellectual, emotional' growth the first year or so. From puppyhood, there are tons of changes and many times you do have to go back and use patience, patience, patience. Retrain, like everyone else is saying. Dont think it's revenge, just 'growth'. I have a dog like that, too, heck I have 5 dogs, who've all gone thru the 'what?cant I poop here?' stage, and some other stuff as well. It made me crazy, but my friend explained it, and every time I found a 'present' *yuk* I just cleaned it, and watched like a hawk. And keep them near you always, when not, confined to a place. Crate may be too big. I know you're a mom with kids (me too I empathize, what with holidays, etc) but look on the web or dog training sites for books about growth stages for dogs.
It's not your fault, but not hers either. Dont lose sight that she's a great dog, you love her, but it will be a while until she's potty trained for good, forever. In fact that might not happen for quite a few months, what with ocasional accidents, I mean.

It worked!! yay!! Making the crate half the size did the trick! I was really surprised when I put up the wall, and realized just how big the crate actually is!! SHe still has room to turn around, and lay dowwn comfortably..but no poop in the crate!!

Yesterday morning was the absolute worst tho..Puppy poopy explosion in the crate, 3yr old peed in her bed, AND in MY bed (including on me)! So its real fun to wake up to clean up all that and bathe both. Daisy has a fondness for jumping in the shower with the 3 yr old, as she did yesterday..but yesterday she decided she'd test me yet a lil more and jump out of the bathtub soaking wet thru the house, And I cant leave a 3 yr old in the shower alone can I? LMAO, they are all so lucky I love them!

Hi Daniella! I'm a lil late here, but I figured I'd throw my 2 cents on my experience with my dog. I have a, now 9 month old, cairn terrier. He also picked up on house training very quickly! We were surprised, because he was a pet shop dog, which, from being used to doing their business in their own crates there, they usually have a hard time with house training. But he picked it up within a week.
Anyways, of course he also regressed. About 2 months after we got him house trained, he started randomly pooping in the apartment. In the crate, in the living room, in the office.. . He did not discriminate. He went anywhere he pleased, except outside. And he gave no warning at all when it would happen. My boyfriend and I are very attentive with him. If we're just watching a movie and don't hear him running around or loudly chewing a bone, one of us always jumps up to see where he's at and what he's up to. So we paid plenty of attention, and he wasn't doing any of the normal "i'm about to poop" mannerisms he usually did before he'd go at all. He was just going.
The vet told us that it's normal. He said that the majority of puppies, especially breeds that are known to be extremely intelligent, go through a regression. And you literally do have to go back to step one with the training again. We did this, and he got back on track again within a week.

We do the same thing..if we dont hear or see her for more than a second..its "uh-oh where's Daisy" and quick try to find her, 9 times outta 10 she's just passed out on my daughters bed under the blankets.

LOL! Glad to hear we aren't the only ones that do that! Usually when we begin searching for him, he's behind the couch chewing a bone, or napping on his shelf. There's a shelf in an end table we have that he has claimed as his own. I swear when they say that dogs are den animals, they aren't kidding. Our dog loves being in tight spaces. He loves his crate too, thank god! He'll go in there on his own sometimes to go nap! However he prefers a pillow and blanket(I'm not kidding...)
