What would you do with this table and chairs?

I just bought this from CL and I really do like it but it needs a facelift. I am going to recover the chair cushions. The table top is like plastic. I just sanded it and it still feels like plastic. Not sure if it is real wood or not. I am guessing not. Any ideas of a way to paint and or treat it so it will look a little better? I like the shabby chic look but I am not quite there with this table and chairs.

Oh my folks had a rattan set like that in our den in the 60's and I saw one at the antique mall the other day too. That furniture is VERY well made and weighed a TON. I know I have seen it painted and am not sure how they did it. I bet spray painting would be the best as there are SO many tiny places to get to. You will need to clean/?sand? prime/paint. At least that would be my guess. I am tring to remember what the top was on Mom and Dad's set and I am drawing a blank. I know what it is called ...it is not wood though...it will come to me or someone else will know.

I was considering maybe just painting the top (or adding glaze to it) and running some paint with glaze over the rubbed areas of the table and chairs?

Or maybe painting it a lighter color and then a darker color on top and sanding it so it comes through?

Ideas?

My vision has been limited to the kitchen/eating area/family room section of our house. For the livingroom I was waiting until I found a rug, although I really wanted to copy Zuzu Petal's wonderful room with the four chairs around a low round table, although if I had any hope of doing that, it would have to be not as feminine. Ironically, when I gave the pitch to DH, he nixed it because he thought it looked like a gentleman's club smoking room! Like our diningroom, it's a small cozy room with a fireplace and a bay window. We'll probably have a couch, coffee table, then two chairs facing the couch with a table between them. I just don't think these are the right chairs. I just asked DH and he asked me whether I love them. They are comfortable but I don't love them enough to see this through. So on they'll go. Thanks again.

If you could redesign this accent table, what would you do?

So first off, this isn't a table. And then things need to make sense. To me it makes no sense to hang a mirror over a piece of furniture unless it will be used to check your look on the way out. So does this area lead to the back yard only (where you don't need to see what you look like there) or does this lead to a garage that you use to come and go (?) I would in some way update the color of that furniture piece ... whether you stain it an espresso or you paint it a flat black. Then I would hang one large art piece over it. I would remove all of the little items you have all around it and decorate with a few larger pieces that somehow correspond to how that piece and that space will be used. Do you need a lamp in that area ... again do you come home at night through that space from a garage entry? Do you need a tray for keys if this door leads to the garage? No personal framed photos. Why would you be going to that space to pick out a magazine to read? What could you possible put in a small glass jar reaching down that far? You get the idea. Think in those terms.

Hello everyone. This has been a process. Thrilled with how the chairs turned out. The picture does not do it justice. New webbing, foam and Dacron wrapped seats. We will wait for next year to tackle refinishing the table. We want to use the table during the fall/winter months vs the kitchen counter. Put up a new light fixture (34" from the table) Now....I'm thinking of curtains on the entire back wall as suggested by Beth H. : ...but what color? What do you think about a colored sheer? I do like the light coming through the blinds....which we did ditch the metal blinds.. ran to Home Depot and got faux wood for now. I'll post some updated photos. As always, your comments are truly appreciated.

I recently spray painting a rattan chair. I used the gray primer and then a lacquer black . Mine is a more intricate design and it really took a lot of paint to get into the nooks and crannies. It seems to be holding up find but it doesn't get a lot of use.
