Follow up to earlier post/adoption

Hi, I promised I would post a follow up. I was thinking of adopting a golden (white?) lab I met at a Petsmart Store. She was very sad looking. You all gave me encouragement about bringing her home, etc. Since money is very tight at our house, we decided that we could not afford her $150 fee so then I was sad. I did decide, however, that I was finally ready to fall in love again and went back to the Pound Route. Saw a picture of an available dog that kind of touched me so we went to meet him. He was pretty uninterested in us but was friendly to the staff and was close to his maximum time there. There was something that attracted me to him despite the fact I only wanted a female. Long story short, we brought him home and he is a delight. Part Greyhound, I guess, and another hound of some kind but only medium sized. He is sharp as a tack, has obviously had attention and some training and I find myself wondering about his previous life. I think someone loved him. I hope they are not grieving. He is a devil to walk, however, and I read all the posts about training him. Very helpful. One question I have....he always acts like he is starving to death. We are allowing him all the food he wants which is quite a bit. Is this the right thing to do? He has been checked for worms but will do a vet visit to ensure he does not have parasites because he is very thin. Enough of me but just wanted to post that the story had a happy ending. Oh, we call him the Clearance Dog since his price was marked down. ha. I think we got a bargain!!!! His real name is Zaky - it was Zak but read where you should have a two syllabal name. ??

Welcome home Zaky! You are 1 lucky Dude to find a new home.
Since he is part Greyhound he will be naturally thin, so I'd take it easy on the food, at least till you see the vet and they can tell you the true needs for him.

Congratulations on a new family member.

Usually shelter dogs are wormed anyway, because the worms/eggs do not always show up in the fecals.

Do not overfeed at one feeding, as this could cause the stomach to turn on itself, which can be fatal. Spread out the feedings throughout the day. Maybe someone here can tell you how much food a medium-sized dog should be offered at a time.

I posted this in another forum, but since the person who dug up this old thread to talk about "gene 6" in multiple forums... In case anyone wants some information about "gene 6"...better/correctly known as "P6"...as it pertains to current discussion based on a study by the EFSA... This is a very wide range of proteins found in virus encoding from HIV to mosaic virus...these proteins are also found in the smoke of burning meat and tobacco. It's a very wide range. In this case, one of the biggest dangers would be a chance encoding to re-invigorate the "dead" version of cauliflower mosaic virus (or P6 residues) that's very commonly used as a carrier string for DNA/RNA insertion that it's inserted into. This could lead to some allergy problems, too, even if it doesn't fully express the mosaic virus but still overlaps enough to express P6 proteins. P6 is a known allergen, though it's not one that everyone is sensitive to. The expression of this gene is highly unlikely, though...and would be regulated to a single (or very small groups) of plants doing this replication rather than entire seed source or a field suddenly replicating mosaic virus or P6 residues. If it is the case that encoding suddenly made it large-scale available it would show up heavily in the research stage and it wouldn't make it out into the consumer market since it's showing inferior/bad genetic expression. One of the biggest parts of GMO research is tossing out 99%+ of everything you're actually trying to create because positive effects of expression aren't stable enough to sell it as seed...or it's showing "bad" expressions. There's a lot of otherwise harmful viruses (to plants or humans) used to insert GMO traits for start/end points into a genetic change that are made inert (and distinctly different) from their original genetic package, but still contain large parts of what makes up the virus, itself. Viruses can easily carry genetic information and they're ideal vehicles for transferring it. The genetic carriers of the virus are merely vehicles. Once you change the "genetic package" inside a virus it's not even what you started with. The "guts" are changed dramatically. If you put a Dodge Neon engine in a Porsche very few people would still consider it a Porsche. That's the level of dramatic change in sequencing going on inside of these packages. You can take certain virus types, depending on what you're trying to achieve, and precisely insert genetic information with start/termination points into existing DNA/RNA...totally turning it's genetic information into something totally different in both makeup and application. Btw, to those with P6 protein sensitivities...this would be a big deal. I'm not trying to knock the research at all. I'm just saying it's overlapping expression would most likely be contained to a very few plants in a field, not widespread. While genetic start/termination points are very good with insertion and replication once stable, nothing is perfect when you're exchanging genes...we see it even natural breeding. The major problem with this particular chain of insertion is the overlapping of the 2 sequences given as example in the paper and what could happen as a consequence of them being genetically linked so closely together...even if there's a very small chance of it happening as defined. It's also worth mentioning we're talking a single virus carrier, not the 100s of types (or the 20-ish most commonly used) carriers. It would also be greatly influenced by the new information inserted, what was cut out, and where the start/termination points overlap (if there is any replication overlap). There's more than 1 way to insert genetic information into virus and the chances of overlap encoding or reversion is different depending on the type of method used.

I wish every seller eBay or website could read this whole posting. I plan in my future to sell plumeria and I'm reading and understanding what is being said here! Good Lessons, respect, ethics and care. Either your in it because you are passionate about what you do or it becomes "Old Hat"...."It's a Job" mentality. If I grow a cutting and intend to sell it as a rooted cutting, it must spend more than 10 months in a pot and hopefully a year to establish good root growth. Sounds like they might be forcing them to root fast to sell? Also it could be possible that a mix in cuttings before the sale was offered on eBay ( Still no excuse! ) Reputation and Customer Relations is so very important especially when it comes to selling something so unique as plumeria and tropical flowering plants! As a Seller (of plumeria) you must remember: #1 Your Plumeria are always remembered where they came from long after the purchase! *Especially if it came from Hawaii for Pete Sake!!! #2 Build a reputation that increases sales to a level you can maintain. ( Ship exactly what you are selling ) #3 Take Pride build a relationship become a mentor of your passion. ( Look for ways to help your buyer become more knowledgeable about their purchase ) #4 Photograph current flowers from the plant the cutting came from ( I'm so appreciative seeing a photo of the cutting before it is shipped!!!) #5 Respond to all calls / emails! ( Listen to your Customers ) From everyone's responses to this post, it sounds like the seller has been at it for years and has lost some of their passion for what made them into who and what they are today. Hi Chrisar, It's a very beautiful plant and I am with Karyn, I would let it branch and grow some before cutting. It has a beautiful shpae to it and once it branches it will be even prettier. Can you see the beginnings of the new branches yet? You should have at least two new branches where the inflos are originating from, sometimes you even get three or four. It looks as if it might be leaning a bit. As the new branches grow it will get even more top heavy so you might want to start thinking about staking it before it starts to really lean. Most dogs in America are overweight, and even vets seem to have lost touch with how a fit and healthy dog should look. It's great that you adopted a dog who needed you, but if I can be candid, I'm worried that you say you couldn't afford the nominal adoption fee on the first dog. What will happen if your new dog needs medical care? Have you thought about getting pet insurance? This forum is so full of posts from people who can't afford care for their dogs and the dogs suffer for it. Sorry to cast a shadow, but the most inexpensive part of acquiring a pet is the adoption fee.

Hi Cynthia, I guess to most people I currently know, $150 is not nominal anymore. We knew we had to buy some supplies for him and would need to take him to the vet so we had to allow for that, as well. He was going to be put down since they are full locally for foster caretakers and he had already been transferred once. I think, boiled down, my thinking was that we will take a chance that he will be healthy. If not, his time here was not long anyway so he will be well-loved and well-cared for in the interum. I am throwing some faith into this, I am sure, and that may bother some people. My husband and I have to wait for health care sometimes, too, but it is better than being put to sleep. :-> He will always have his shots,have lots of attention, get fed a good quality dogfood, be exercised and see the vet once a year for checkups. Our Sandy lived that way for 13 years and we hope Zak does the same.

Zaky sounds cute! Since he is medium-sized, maybe he is a whippet mix. I like the personalities of whippets and greyhounds too.

My sister has a boxer/whippet mix. It's hilarious because she can out-run the greyhounds at the dog park, HA!

I am sure Zaky will have a great life, lucky to have been rescued at all from the sounds of things. Glad you rescued & are sharing your love. Yes, do post pics.

Zak's a lucky dog. Good for you for saving him. Greyhounds are great dogs so if he inherited any of their traits, he'll be a fine companion.

Hi, I deeply appreciate your interest and support on my new baby. Very touching. I looked up Whippet (never heard of them until this adoption) and he has many, if not all, the characteristics. I will see if I can figure out how to use my camera again and post a picture. He is a golden color. I took him to the dog park yesterday and used the small dog area - he really was not interested in the other dogs until the very end and then showed mild interest in only one dog. He was more interested in the large dogs on the other side of the fence. I was hesitant to take him there cause there were elephant dogs in there!! He acted quite superior, actually, like he was the King visiting the peasants and there were some pricey dogs there!!! When we had been there about twenty minutes, he had had enough and was very good on the leash. Must like to release some energy and then is willing to walk right beside me with little pulling. He gives a lot of eye contact now and soon will know my deepest secrets. On occasion, he will seek me out in another room, visit briefly and then returns to his new bed or the couch. Hey!!! Lay on the towel, little boy. Loves to be covered up completely and pulls his blanket over his head.....reminds me of my kids when I tried to get them up. I appreciate all of you letting me babble about him - my heart was so broken when Sandy had to be put down over a year ago and it has taken a long time for me to decide we should try again. My only complaint is that he loves to relieve himself on my rosemary bush outside that I have managed to keep alive through one winter so far. I guess he likes the "room deodorant." Small price to pay. Susan
