First flowers follow-up (pics)

A couple of weeks ago I posted the first pics of our first blooms. I wondered if the plumie would be mature enough in the spring to take cuttings from?

And finally . . . our newest addition to the family. Her name is Ali. We adopted her from the local shelter. We have three indoor cats and two labs who definitely live outdoors.

Beautiful plumies and an equally beautiful kitty. Good for you for adopting from a shelter. I'm sure that you could cut a branch in the spring but why would you want to? You need to take a fairly good size cutting and the plant isn't that big. I think it will make it look very unbalanced. You will get a couple more branches growing from the tips with the inflos. Why not wait until they have grown about 18" and cut one of them the season after next.

sah54, thank you for taking the time to list and tally all of your expenditures. There are loads of times when people who come here looking for help wish to know the cost of landscape items. Just the "ball park" is often all they need. Too, some people have an idea that things for the yard should somehow cost next to nothing, and they are surprised to find that it's not the case. The information is helpful for letting people in on some of the costs they could expect. There is not a good SCIENTIFIC way to answer your question about whether using a designer would give you a better plan for the same money. I think it depends on the designer. Some people choose the wrong designer so are not as happy as you are after they have the work done. Admittedly, since I have a dog in the fight I am prejudiced, but I believe that IF a person chooses the right designer, they will achieve more for a given expenditure. Often, a homeowner does not know how to avoid wasting money, whereas a designer knows many ways. And they know many ways to enhance property. Hopefully, they have good taste as that would be key in how helpful they can be. But using a designer can be a double-edged sword as sometimes they find ways to design too much spending into the plan. You've done a good job and made yourself happy so I'm sure will have no regrets.

That $800 totem guy, was he for real? I wonder if he ever sold any? Yes $45 is more than I would feel comfortable asking. Although, last year at this same Craft Fair I put a $40 price on one of my very favorite totems thinking no one would ever pay that much and to my dismay someone bought if right away. I was so sad to give it up. You just never know what people will pay I guess. The thing about it is once you put the price on it and people think it's too much they walk away. My dh says that I can always lower the price after a few hours or bargain with the person. I've not had anyone bargain with me have you? Oh, yes I did have one lady ask me if she bought two would I take $50 instead of $55. I said yes of course. This will only be my 4th ever craft fair and I learn new things from all of the Garden Web people that are really helpful. Thank you all! Marilyn

Follow-up/ pics of old cemeteries & stones

duchesse nalabama.....I was certainly surprised myself at how close those headstones (in photo 3) were together. It seems there are only inches between the graves! I have no idea why they are so close, except to say that the graves close like that were the oldest stones in the cemetery. The other parts of the cemetery where the stones were more recent, they were farther apart. Maybe the original cemetery plot was small so they had to crowd them together like that for lack of space? It did appear to me that they enlarged the cemetery in later years. hunt4cem-roses....(great name, btw!)....Its great to know of yet another fellow enthusiast and I hope you will continue to join in the forum! I love hearing from others about their 'finds' and experiences. DH and I always wonder what kinds of roses folks are finding in other parts of the country. It certainly is an enjoyable pastime that not many people other than ourselves truly understand. People think we're a bit 'odd' the way we explore so many old cemeteries...lol. mendocino rose....Glad you were able to visit up 'our way'. New England really IS beautiful, although this time of year we are all getting restless for the snow to go away! Celeste

Hey Squirrel, thanks for the heads up about zipdee's thread, her porch is gorgeous. And I live in southwest Tennessee by the way.My goal is to keep those ferns alive and not let them know I have a black thumb! bonniee, Thaks for the link to the Christmas picture. I'm planning to decorate my urns somehow for the holidays too. They are much too heavy to move around too much! Your porch is beautiful, the wreaths in windows are one of my favorite looks. I did get the bigger size urns by the way, did you see the picture farther down? kswl - Thank you, I'm glad most everyone thinks the new planters are good. I wish I had researched size/material/pricing a little better before I got in so deep. I'm pleased with my iron ones. I've placed a tile under each to hopefully prevent staining. BUT if I had known what it was going to end up costing for this size I would've kept looking for composite. I just got in deep and kept going but it's done now and I just got off an 80 hr work week (I usually work 25) so the overtime will certainly buy my urns :-)

Hi Chrisar,

It's a very beautiful plant and I am with Karyn, I would let it branch and grow some before cutting. It has a beautiful shpae to it and once it branches it will be even prettier. Can you see the beginnings of the new branches yet? You should have at least two new branches where the inflos are originating from, sometimes you even get three or four.

It looks as if it might be leaning a bit. As the new branches grow it will get even more top heavy so you might want to start thinking about staking it before it starts to really lean. Although what I am seeing might just be an optical illusion. Good luck with your beautiful plant and welcome to the forum :)

Thanks for the advice. Any ideas on the ID? I noticed the flowers are more rounded than pointed compared to some others I've seen here that are also white with yellow throats. Just curious.
Fall is just beginning to arrive here in the Ozarks and it's a beautiful time of year. Hope you all have had a terrific season with your plumies.
