Have you had any cooking disasters?

Cooking disasters can be funny in retrospect. Mine--leaving out the sugar in brownies. My MIL put chocolate milk in the mashed potatoes.

What cooking disasters have you had?

True story--I was giving a girl a cookie recipe and told her to add 1 teaspoon of soda. She said, "What kind--Coke or Pepsi?"

About 40 years ago, I put chili powder instead of cinnamon in my pumpkin pies. We ate them anyway.

You ask IF I have had cooking disasters? Why not ask how many, and how often!
There was the half-raw meatloaf, the noodles that were thick enough to pave the street with, semi-hardboiled eggs that I tried to make deviled eggs with anyway (didn't work big time), and the wok that wouldn't.
Fortunately I have become a better cook and have learned to hide my disasters better.

Thanks for all the feedback. I have a wild place not good generally for daylilies that will grow the generic orange daylilies. When I like something a lot but they are not impressive bloomers, I stick them there & if they grow or not, oh well. Sounds like Night Beacon and Brave World are headed there. Now I'd hope I can find plants similar to them that bloom well. thanks again, Brad

Oh boy Nicole do I feel for you. I had a colicky baby for 9 months. He started out as a breast fed baby, cried and cried, we thought he wasnt getting enough. Changed to formula, didnt help. We changed his formula 6 times. The doctor told me that if you added up all the cries of a baby for 24 hours and it totalled more than 1 hour, you had a colicky baby. My baby was barely quiet for 1 hour in 24. The only thing that seemed to help was warm baths and holding him on his back, feet towards my belly, head straight out from that and constant bouncing up and down. I would walk around like that for what seemed like hours, but he wouldnt cry. My back on the other hand was killing me. He also was a cat napper so there was no rest to be found. Mylicon helps some babies, and I can't remember if its peppermint oil or spearmint oil (my baby is now 18) (Just a drop or two in their bottle). You might want to ask the pediatrician about that. I remember those days, we called them the "cranking hours". Right around the same time every night, that first cry and your heart sinks, you know whats coming. Good luck, and hang tough, eventually it will end. Those babies seem to wind up with the best personalities!

I think it's a pretty easy plant to keep happy. Bright light keeps it from stretching out more than you'd like. It won't like a soil that stays soggy for any length of time, and tips brown easily if the level of stuff dissolved in the soil solution (usually from fertilizer and tapwater residues) gets too high. Basically, life for this plant runs pretty smoothly if you have a nice bright, warm spot for it to live and keep it in a soil that allows you to flush the accumulating dissolved solids out w/o having to worry the soil will remain wet so long it will cause problems with root health or root function. When I lived in San Diego in the 80's, I gardened for a year in the City Heights community garden. There were a lot of great gardeners there, but theft was a major problem. I had my entire sweet corn crop stolen the day before I had planned to pick it... another gardener said they saw someone selling it on a corner a few blocks away. On another day, I found a mother with her young children walking through some neighboring plots, and asked her what she was doing there. Her reply was "This is a community garden, we can take what we want". That was the last year I gardened there. Since then, I've often gardened on other people's land, in exchange for services rendered (such as mowing or keeping trash picked up). Only once did I have someone attempt to steal something - which was carrots. It seems the culprit didn't have anything to dig with, so they just stole what they could pull out. Fortunately for me, they didn't get much; the roots were already deep, so most of the tops broke off. They left a pile of leaves in the parking lot.

OK....a week ago...I got a bag of frozen scallops the size of golf balls....YUM! I tried frying them in oil before adding them to the noodles alfredo....they shrunk....oozing milky white water until they were the size of peas!!!!!! :0)

My mother sent me a recipe for her fried chicken coating. Salt and spices. It didn't make much, so I tripled the recipe and fryed my chicken. It came out terrible, inedible ! I called to tell her and she told me she forgot to list "the flour". Oh, yeah.

The unwatched pressure cooker spewing beef stew onto the ceiling and walls and deep into the exhaust fan was *memorable*.

As a newlywed I made carbon-dateable artifacts out of some beef ribs.

When I was a kid my brother tried to make cheese toast by putting a slice of bread and one of cheese next to each other in the same toaster slot. The cheese melted down into the crumb tray; smoked like hell!

When I was maybe 10 or 12, I talked mother into letting me make "Martha Washington's hot chocolate" from the Betty Crocker cookbook. It's a rather involved recipe for a child that included whipped egg whites.
Well, I blew it....tasted horrible.

I was so mortified, that I drank all of it(the recipe was for something like 6 cups) and told mother that had changed my mind.

No one ever said a word, but i'm sure everyone knew what happened.

Needless to say...I got very sick to my stomach and retched in the bathroom for what seemed to be hours.

My most recent one was last week.
I was really tired and instead of cooking the dinner I had planned I told DH I was going to reheat some soup and make cheese biscuits. Sounded good to him.
I got the soup started, preheated the oven and got out the Bisquick. I measured it, added the cheese and garlic powder and some parsley flakes. I got out the milk and instead of adding 2/3 cup I added 2 cups. Oops!
Not being one to waste food, I added an egg and some oil, some more Bisquick (only had a little left) and made waffles.
I ate one with some of the soup and it was barely edible.
DH made one and added syrup and butter and gagged it down.
He is so frugal (AKA cheap) he had them again for breakfast.
I threw the rest of the batter away.

Grabbed the bottle of cough syrup instead of vanilla. Kids loved the cookies, but my dad said, "They taste rather odd this time."
