Have you had any cooking disasters?

Cooking disasters can be funny in retrospect. Mine--leaving out the sugar in brownies. My MIL put chocolate milk in the mashed potatoes.

What cooking disasters have you had?

True story--I was giving a girl a cookie recipe and told her to add 1 teaspoon of soda. She said, "What kind--Coke or Pepsi?"

About 40 years ago, I put chili powder instead of cinnamon in my pumpkin pies. We ate them anyway.

You ask IF I have had cooking disasters? Why not ask how many, and how often!
There was the half-raw meatloaf, the noodles that were thick enough to pave the street with, semi-hardboiled eggs that I tried to make deviled eggs with anyway (didn't work big time), and the wok that wouldn't.
Fortunately I have become a better cook and have learned to hide my disasters better.

Sorta comes down to how long of a "beginning" one is considering, for me. My very first 2 orchids are long gone. One was a NOID den that eventually died, and the other was a NOID phal that I sold or gave away at some point. I do still have 2 divisions of a NOID miniden (which is planted in wet peat in a bog terr) I bought at Lowes yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaars back when the BBS carried them frequently. That purchase was a year or two after that of the phal and den mentioned previously. All predated the first time I attended an OS meeting or even knew of events like orchid shows. :) W/ the exception of the aforementioned miniden, my oldest plants [if I stretch "beginning" to include my first orchid show] would be a Pot Hoku Gem 'Superspots' and Blc Blazing Treat. Both of which I've had for probably ten or more years now.

March of '78. We were living at my in-law's farm with FIL. He had an old huge wood burning cookstove that he liked to build fire in to warm up the kitchen. Kitchen was 120 yrs old, built by his father. There was a slight flue fire about midnight, and Hubby had woke me up to be on alert to get out if they didn't control it. I realized at some point that I was sitting on the side of the bed and didn't know why, so I laid back down... About 10 am, I finished the dishes and went out to feed the dogs. His father had driven into town. I thought I smelled smoke and asked Hubby to check it out. He came back in all excited and grabbed the girls then 2 and 4, and put them in the pickup. I was told to call the township fire dept and get the hose! He drove down to the shop and got the chainsaw and extension ladder and climbed the ladder and cut the burning board off the side of the house! My job was to run the hose over the brick chimney and try to put out the flames. At one point I went back into the house to call fire dept. again... When they got there, the fire was out, there was a big pile of smoldering siding on the ground and 2 scared little girls! We were so relieved to have saved the old house! His father pulled in and just looked in disbelief at what had happened in the 3 hours he had been gone.... The fire dept had to inspect anyway, and one fell through the kitchen ceiling. What a mess. I think the insurance paid more for the damages than it cost to build that portion in the beginning... God blesses us in many strange ways...under any other circumstances, on any given day, that could have been a disaster! Hubby is very aware of the chimneys now. He had to go up on the roof at 11:45 on New Years Eve and check it because it wasn't drafting like it should. 30 min later, (not at midnight) we heard a couple of gunshots. Not unusual for NYE in the country at midnight, but this particular time, I was laying in bed and he was standing at foot of bed. We both heard a couple plinks hit the side of the house (behind my head) and we think it must have been buckshot. Stupid people...neighbors have cows and we have horses who are in that field each day... Again, blessed in so many ways.....

All restaurant kitchens are divided into stations such as grill,saute,fry and cold foods. A line cook is in charge of his station. he may also have a team to oversee. They are the prep cooks. Sometimes a line cook may be the pastry chef or even a butcher. In a busy kitchen everyone has their job. Some have jobs where they work alone ,others work with a small team. The line cook is responsible for every little thing that comes out of his area of the kitchen. The line cook has to manage his small staff of helpers if his job doesn't have him working alone. He also has to coordinate everything with the rest of the kitchen so everything comes out on time. Plus he has multiple orders to work on at once, hence all the stress. Chef de parte is the French term for line cook. He is a part of the whole. DS is a great cook and considered going into it for about 5 seconds. He has friends who are chefs in well known high end restaurants. Many would love to get out of the business. It's nothing like what they dreamed it would be when entering culinary school.

Oh boy Nicole do I feel for you. I had a colicky baby for 9 months. He started out as a breast fed baby, cried and cried, we thought he wasnt getting enough. Changed to formula, didnt help. We changed his formula 6 times. The doctor told me that if you added up all the cries of a baby for 24 hours and it totalled more than 1 hour, you had a colicky baby. My baby was barely quiet for 1 hour in 24. The only thing that seemed to help was warm baths and holding him on his back, feet towards my belly, head straight out from that and constant bouncing up and down. I would walk around like that for what seemed like hours, but he wouldnt cry. My back on the other hand was killing me. He also was a cat napper so there was no rest to be found. Mylicon helps some babies, and I can't remember if its peppermint oil or spearmint oil (my baby is now 18) (Just a drop or two in their bottle). You might want to ask the pediatrician about that. I remember those days, we called them the "cranking hours". Right around the same time every night, that first cry and your heart sinks, you know whats coming. Good luck, and hang tough, eventually it will end. Those babies seem to wind up with the best personalities!

OK....a week ago...I got a bag of frozen scallops the size of golf balls....YUM! I tried frying them in oil before adding them to the noodles alfredo....they shrunk....oozing milky white water until they were the size of peas!!!!!! :0)

My mother sent me a recipe for her fried chicken coating. Salt and spices. It didn't make much, so I tripled the recipe and fryed my chicken. It came out terrible, inedible ! I called to tell her and she told me she forgot to list "the flour". Oh, yeah.

The unwatched pressure cooker spewing beef stew onto the ceiling and walls and deep into the exhaust fan was *memorable*.

As a newlywed I made carbon-dateable artifacts out of some beef ribs.

When I was a kid my brother tried to make cheese toast by putting a slice of bread and one of cheese next to each other in the same toaster slot. The cheese melted down into the crumb tray; smoked like hell!

When I was maybe 10 or 12, I talked mother into letting me make "Martha Washington's hot chocolate" from the Betty Crocker cookbook. It's a rather involved recipe for a child that included whipped egg whites.
Well, I blew it....tasted horrible.

I was so mortified, that I drank all of it(the recipe was for something like 6 cups) and told mother that had changed my mind.

No one ever said a word, but i'm sure everyone knew what happened.

Needless to say...I got very sick to my stomach and retched in the bathroom for what seemed to be hours.

My most recent one was last week.
I was really tired and instead of cooking the dinner I had planned I told DH I was going to reheat some soup and make cheese biscuits. Sounded good to him.
I got the soup started, preheated the oven and got out the Bisquick. I measured it, added the cheese and garlic powder and some parsley flakes. I got out the milk and instead of adding 2/3 cup I added 2 cups. Oops!
Not being one to waste food, I added an egg and some oil, some more Bisquick (only had a little left) and made waffles.
I ate one with some of the soup and it was barely edible.
DH made one and added syrup and butter and gagged it down.
He is so frugal (AKA cheap) he had them again for breakfast.
I threw the rest of the batter away.

Grabbed the bottle of cough syrup instead of vanilla. Kids loved the cookies, but my dad said, "They taste rather odd this time."
