toilet fill valve: too much water?

I had to replace the fill valve assembly in my toilet. The old one wasn't shutting off when the float raised. I bought the one brand that Home Depot sells, installed it and everything seems fine, except that even after the bowl fills, water still pours into it. And the pressure coming from the fill valve's tube, into the overflow pipe, is quite rapid and loud.

Could it be pushing out too much water?

You need to adjust the fill level on the new fill valve.

Check the instructions that came with your new valve and it will explain how to adjust the float for your valve.

If you have a Fluidmaster universal replacement valve you will see the black float on and there is a wire attached that goes up to the valve control arm. The wire is attached to the float by means of a metal spring clip.

Flush the toilet and move the clip down the wire a bit. watch where the water stops when it refills, You may need to slide that clip a bit further down.

Somewhere on the interior of your tank there is a printed or embossed "Water Level" mark that indicates where the level should be when the tank is full.

The newer model Fluidmaster has a plastic screw type adjustment, not the metal bar w/ spring clip. The float is adjusted perfectly: the water fills right to the line embossed on the tank.

Maybe I can explain the problem differently.

After flushing, the bowl fills up fairly quickly. While the tank is filling up, water is shooting out fairly fast from the refill tube, into the overflow pipe. The water in the bowl is rippling while this is happening. Eventually, when the water reaches the marked line in the tank, the float arm raises and the fill valve shuts off, and the water stops rippling in the bowl.

My concern is about the rippling water while the tank is filling. Is this water being wasted? Its actually my mother's toilet and she swears up and down that the rippling water indicates wasted water.

I hope this description is better.

You need to go to your local hardware store and tell the sales clerk in plumbing you want a Fluidmaster 400A fill valve for a toilet. This will work in 99% of the toilets. You can easily change this out yourself in about 20 minutes or less. The instructions are very informative and this will cure your problem. Good luck. Make sure the water level in the tank is at least 1" below the overflow tube. Make sure the fill tube (from the fill valve) is directing water into the overflow tube. Checking the flapper is easy... a few drops of food coloring in the tank and wait to see if the color gets to the toilet bowl. If it does then the flapper is leaking. Clean the flapper valve seat. Use the scrubbie side of a kitchen sponge and wipe the seat area (where the flapper sits) in a circular motion. The old style toilets seem to be happy with the Fluidmaster 400 fill valves and the red flapper valves. The new ECO friendly toilets can be picky about fill valves and flappers and only seem to likeOEM replacement parts.

thanks jack, I plan on aerating this fall and de-thatching to remove any dead brown material next spring. The lawn is very thick and weed free. Even though most of the dollar spot is in a full sun area; the large amount of rain we received this spring and some poor judgment on my part with over watering (never had an irrigation system before) provide a rich environment for the dollar spot. I am hoping changes to my lawn care system will alleviate the problem next spring. I am trying to understand the proper timing to water. i.e. when the grass appearance indicates it needs water, screw driver insertion test etc. I also plan on completing a soil betterment program this growing season that Morph had suggested based on a Logan Lab's Soil Test result. Along with supplementing the program with Milorganite in early September.

No, it is not wasted water. The bowl is actually the bottom of the trap for the toilet drain line. During the flush all the water in the bowl is carried out leaving the trap void of water and sewer gassess could get into the structure. In order to insure that cannot happen a toilet fill valve is equipped with the small diameter line that attaches to the top of the standpipe. That line is properly called the "Trap Primer" and its specific function is to discharge a small portion of the incoming water down the standpipe and into the bowl to insure the toilets trap is refilled properly.
