Reaplaced old sink and p-trap does not line up

I replaced a plastic stand laundry sink with one with a cabinet and counter top.

The new sink sticks out more and sits higher than the old one.

the p-trap sits about 2 inches closer to the wall and does not meet the drain of the new sink. I plan on buying an extension pipe for once I get the p-trap to line up but how do I get the p-trap to line up with the sink drain? Do they make a flex drain pipe that I can attach to the drain and then to the p-trap?

It is all pvc and compression fittings.

you just use longer tail pieces and j arms(i think that is the term the part that goes to teh wall.) cut to the length required.

i have never been a fan of the flex tail pieces, they clog easily in my experience, especially if you really flex them cockeyed.

IPC states no direct connections to any device that provides sterile goods (utensils) for the use of human consumption be directly tied to any source that contains contaminates. This code is laxed in some states but the core reason for Air Gaps stands unmatched in protection of the reversal of contaminates. High looping does not protect the reversal of flow; it's a shortcut allowed but does not fully protect. The first attempt with a plunger to unclog a kitchen sink drain will push that sewage into the dishwasher. Granite installers are notorious for avoiding drilling holes for them. They just say "high loop it" and it will be okay. Any plumber who respects their license should know to think outside the code book when this type of situation is presented when you replace a dishwasher or garbage disposal. You take your reputation and license into risk when you "high loop it" in an area that enforces that code regarding Air Gaps. As long as there is a connection to the waste system BELOW the flood rim level of the fixture it serves, it is susceptible to not protect the device used in producing sterile goods. First off, that is not a J-bend. A J-bend is a straight length of pipe with a 90deg bend on the end. The pipe is question here has a 180deg bend and it is properly called a "Return Bend". When that return bend was initially made they began by making a straight return bend without a cleanout hole. They then drilled a hole at the cleanout location slightly smaller than the desired finished opening and the tubular brass of the bend was then swaged out to form the finished shape and size at the cleanout location. A short piece of threaded brass tubing was then inserted into the opening and soldered in place and finally they screwed the cleanout cap on the end of the threaded brass tubing. In this case over time the threaded brass tubing corroded and fused into the cleanout cap so that when the cleanout cap was turned instead of the cap unscrewing the solder joint broke and the treaded tube came out of the return bend. If you examine the section of brass tubing extending out of the cap in the last photo you can see where it was originally soldered into the tubing. That problem is quite common when working with old tubular brass fittings and generally Plumbers do not even attempt to remove the plug, but rather they take the entire return bend off to open the line for cleanout. It was mentioned that this is an "S" trap, which is illegal, but that is not correct. It is true that S-traps are now prohibited by code and may no longer be used for Plumbing, but here we run into an issue of semantics. "Plumbing is defined as the act of initially installing a piping system whereas the act of repairing an existing system is defined as "Maintenance". When performing Maintenance we are required to maintain exactly the original configuration, therefore given that an S-trap was code approved when that line was first installed you are required to replace it with an S-Trap. If you were to move that sink or do a rehab on the bathroom that involved changing the location of any fixtures or the physical configuration of any of the piping you would then be performing an act of plumbing and as such, all plumbing within that room would have to be brought up to the code that is in effect at the time the rehab is performed.

actually it looks like I can get everything to line up by adding a 45 elbow between the wall and the trap adapter so the trap adapter is angled towards the sink drain tail instead of pointing straight out

There is no such thing as a shallow P-trap, what your looking at is a "closet bend", which is simply a long radiu 90deg elbow.... IN Plumbing vernacular what you call a toilet is properly called a "water closet" and the round ring on the floor that the water closet is mounted on is called a "closet ring". From your description your closet ring is mounted directly on the top end of the closet bend, which is fine. If the drain line was deeper they could put a length of pipe from a closet flange to the closet bend, but in your case its not needed. Not only is there NO P-TRAP on the line, code prohibits installing a P-trap there. For a water closet the trap is built into the bowl section of the water closet and if one was to install a P-trap on the line, that would be double trapping which is code prohibited. The bottom line is,,, the answer to your last question if "YES", you are worrying for nothing.

I was able to buy a longer j-arm. The plumber had installed the compression plastic nut for the original j-arm in a place that was impossible to access it. I cut the original j-arm and used a coupler. I then connected the new longer j-arm and the p-trap and it lined up.

I only see one small problem with that solution; it is expressly PROHIBITED BY CODE.

"Maximum of one (1) slip joint on the outlet side of a trap."

The one slip joint that is permitted is the trap adapter that makes the transition from the P-trap tubing to the waste arm pipe.

In an instance where the trap does not reach to the waste arm the correct solution remove the existing trap adapter and extend the waste arm.

Maybe I have my terminology wrong. I bought a longer waste arm to extend it. Is the coupler the problem?
So to make it code, I will have to find a way to access that one compression nut that held the original waste arm pipe?
That means I will have to knock out some of my foundation to get to it.
I can not believe it passed code the way the original plumber did it. He buried the compression nut that holds the waste arm in brick and mortar. Just a small section is exposed.
I can go into the crawl space and cut the waste line where it is glued and start over. I still will have to knock out some of the foundation brick to even get the pipe and nut out but maybe not as much.

What kind of coupler did you use?

It doesn't sound like the original trap arm was installed correctly.

A friend of mine invented,patented and manufactured waste arms with 22.5 and 45 degree right and left offsets available in two lengths in each offset. They are UPC approved and stamped. He has not started marketing them yet. They are 17 ga. chrome.
