A serious poem...by me

DH is leaving today for 10 days at turkey camp. He and his friend have been going every spring for 20 (25?) years. Two of the guys that used to go with them were killed in separate but very tragic accidents in years past. Both of the two men were named Don. Anyway, I don't really do much poetry, but I offered several years ago to write something in memory of "the two Dons" that they could hang in the cabin with photos of the pair. I haven't told DH I wrote it this year...I will frame it and surprise him Saturday when I join them at camp for their annual "friends and family" cookout.

Just so you know...they have numerous traditions. When they kill a turkey, they "score" it according to weight, spurs, beard length, etc., and have a celebration ceremony with a cigar and a beer. They also drink hot chocolate before bed each night. And the name of their hunting place is called -T- (which is prounced Bar T Bar).

I'm very nervous...I hope the guys like it.

Two Dons

When morning breaks oÂer yonder hills as crows begin to caw

And darkness lifts its sultry veil, inviting reverent awe

Two Dons will be there

When sherbet skies give way to blue and gobblers flee the roost

Soft light drifts down, gently revealing all that GodÂs produced

Two Dons will be there

When hunters lightly tread new grass, then rest beside a tree

Watching, waitingÂteasing toms that wander Âround freely

Two Dons will be there

When gunfire breaks still April air and echoes through the calm

The bounty fallsÂfriends celebrate as they score the tom

Two Dons will be there

When campfire smoke encircles you and orange embers glow

Hot chocolate steams from in your cup as evening breezes blow

Two Dons will be there

When darkness falls on camp once moreÂa season gone too fast

Adding to your memories of cherished gatherings past

Two Dons will departÂ

"WeÂll hunt on heavenÂs vast landscape

Where redbuds bloom all year

Then return in spring to ÂTÂ

ÂTil you hunt with us up here."
