How are you trying to offset gas price?

We are trying to live on SS only & wondered what y'all are doing to help offset gas prices besides cutting back on driving & reducing speed to 55?

I decided to make a game of it & casting about for ways to try, this is I've come up with so far...

1. Planning meals carefully & doubling recipes for extra meals to save energy, which saves mine too! I get sooo tired of cooking!

2. Baking several things when oven is on.

3. Using outside grill more now that's it warm- charcoal is still cheap & oak/pecan branch deadfall from our land is free & great for smoking meat.

4. Hanging nearly all laundry on clothesline to dry.

5. Lowered setting on water heater except right before daily showers.

6. Unplugging items that permit power "bleed thru" - like computer, monitor, toaster, etc. (Read it can save $11. per month- don't know if it's really true yet, but...

7. Using dust mop several times a week rather than vac'g every day

8. Opening windows & doors instead of using ceiling fans, weather permitting. Even tho' temps have been in low 80's our huge shade trees keep the house cool with cross breezes.

9. Planted more veggies, herb, etc. than usual for canning or freezing.

10. Using ol' fashioned hand held edger instead of gas weed trimmer & getting the benefit of more exercise to boot.

Wanna' play? Open to any & all ideas & suggestions!
