Potatoes..the other day I bought a 5lb. bag of white potatoes @ $3.99. I bought them instead of the red potatoes because they were $4.99 for 5 pounds.

Potatoes are $6.99 for a 10 lb. bag and onions are 99 cents for the plain old yellow ones. I refuse to pay that much! I go to the 99 cent store or Costco and buy a bag for somewhere between 45 and 50 cents a pound. Bettye/AZ

One good tip I learned (from trial & error, then much research) is to plant and harvest things at the proper time for your growing zone- even in places like california where people might tell you "oh you can grow anything there all year round"... not true! some plants are warm season, some are cool season, some like to overwinter, some are annual, some are perennial, some are biennial, etc. Research each plant, and also don't assume plants that seem similar will have the same needs, for example peas and beans both come in bush and vining varieties and grow in pods, but peas like cool weather while beans like it hot- except for a few certain beans that actually do prefer it cool... Also, potatoes can tolerate cool weather while sweet potatoes don't. Kale & lettuces grow best in cool weather while chard seems to do fine in hot or cool. You get the idea. If you plant things at the wrong time you'll be wasting your time and the seeds- I tried lettuce when it was too late to be planting it and in the heat of summer it went straight to bolt. I've planted zucchini and tomatoes when it was too cold for them and they grew poorly and didn't produce fruit. Harvest times are just as important as planting times- I planted radishes once and they didn't seem to get big enough by harvesting time so I thought I could just let them keep growing for a while longer- but found out that if you leave them in the ground too long they get tough and too spicy and shrivel up instead of getting bigger! Also it may be tempting to let a zucchini get huge, thinking it will just provide more food when you let a fruit get 2 feet long... No! Harvest them young & tender and about the size they sell them in the grocery store (or smaller), any larger and you get a hard shell, lots of seeds, and very little (and quite tasteless) flesh. Moral of these stories is to research each fruit or veggie you want to grow & follow the "directions", it will mean the difference between success & failure! Also- healthy soil is #1 important thing for plants - no chemical fertilizer! Compost is your best friend. Mulch is your other best friend- use what is available & free- leaves & pine needles are what I use. Good luck!!!

I've got lots of time to write about this subject because I am NOT selling this year - mostly a side effect of last years drought and the drought that is supposed to happen this year, though it has been raining pretty good here lately. I grow and sell ornamental plants and herbs from my home garden and I only sold at one farmer's market about 50 miles away last year. I live and garden inner city. There is one much larger market nearby but it is really a re-sellers market and I cannot compete with the prices for plants (in the spring they will have over 30 plant vendors!!) and it is difficult to get a space. Because of the high gas prices I imagine plenty of shoppers will NOT be driving too far to shop - which could be a good thing for vendors. But because of higher prices across the board most people will have less disposable income so there won't be a lot of experimenting with new veggies or fruits. But then - with all the stress and pressure on the wallet, I guess plenty of people will want the "fun" shopping experience you can only get at an outdoor market. The charm of the small market I sold at last year is that it's set up in a downtown parking lot with plenty of shops and galleries around and neighborhoods within walking distance - which is where most of the customers come from. But in order to succeed (its a relatively new market) it really needs more customers and with gas getting higher I worry that people further away are just not going to make the effort to drive that far to shop. Personally I believe that in order to make farmers markets successful you need plenty of them. They need to appear at convenient locations in every small town so that people get used to shopping at them. I also believe that only a section of the population wishes to walk around outside and shop in the open air - no matter what you do, some people would just rather shop at the grocery store or the mall (shudder). This area just came through an extreme drought where city drinking water was measured in days, not months, and yet plenty of people are out shopping for plants this spring. Garden centers are full, the farmers market vendors report good sales - legally we are only allowed to water once each week. I just couldn't wrap my head around selling something to people that will probably fail once the rains stop, the heat sets in and outdoor watering is restricted again. Besides most of my spring crop looked pretty awful. So I miss the extra money but not the extra work - and I worry about what direction to take for the future.

I'm not so much trying to offset gas prices as trying to keep more money coming in than going out. Being frugal isn't new here. Lately, I've been stocking up on canned veggies for the winter. They've gone up $.06 in the last few months. I expect to see them to take another leap here pretty soon. There seems to be a run on rice right now and stores are rationing it. I bought some to put away. I'm doing a clean out of my freezer right now. If we aren't careful, we lose things to freezer burn. I bought some sugar and flour wrapped them in the plastic sacks from the store and am storing it in the extra freezer space. I will use it to make bread and other baked goodies later on since the price of wheat is also increasing. We're putting more effort towards not wasting food and other things. It's hard with three kids, but it's a lesson they need to learn too. We don't have very much room in our yard for growing veggies, so I'm planting veggies in our flower beds. My main goal was to teach the kids how to grow things, but it'll work as a cost cutting measure too. It certainly tastes better. Some other posters have been posting tips such as buying a bag of green onions from the produce section of the store using the ends and planting the bulb. I don't use a lot of green onions, but I thought that was a great idea. I bought some onions for my enchiladas a couple of weeks ago and planted the bulbs. They are growing great and taste good in salads. I also bought several herb plants last week. I don't normally cook with a lot of herbs, but as I've been going back to more 'from scratch' cooking, I've been experimenting. If I can find some recipes my family likes, it'll be worth it.

Thanks for posting that photo. Here's my idea: I moved the fridge to the inner wall, recessing it enough so that its case (not the doors, just the body of the fridge) extends 16.5" into the room. I made the lower cabs next to it 15", with the counter at 16.5" deep so that they dead-end into the side of the fridge cab. That few extra inches of depth will make it easier to make coffee, toast, etc in this area. I moved the sink down the wall, nearly to the opening with just enough room for an 18" DW. 18" European DW hold as much as US 24" DWs so you're not giving up function but you are gaining more space in your small kitchen. Panel the DW to make it disappear. Check the selection of panel ready 18" DW at AJ Madison (see link). You will need to do some trenching in your slab to make this work but you gain a large amount of prep counter between sink and range with a window above. IMO, that is worth the expense. electricity......ugh!!!

Houston is HOT - air is NOT optional! Six in the family = lots of dishes, laundry & just general electrical usage. (College aged kids all with computers on 24-7)

With the air set at 78 we still had a bill that was TOO HIGH

Cooking oil and self rising flour have both gone up. My horses' feed has increased steadily and is 12.95 for a bag that lasts me two days. I could feed them cheaper but I won't feed a lesser quality feed.

I can't complain about my electric bill tho. It was $48 last month. I don't have a/c. I wouldn't be able to work outside if I got too used to a/c...the heat would kill me.

I've noticed that just about everything has gone up, but I'm still getting some good buys on meat, by buying it when it is on sale. I buy whatever fruits and vegetables are in season, and usually from the local produce farm.

Finding Dollar General is having big increases

The cats' dry food has gone up $3.00 in the past year and the wet food has gone up too but since it varies more by store I am not sure by how much. Elmo has to have special urinary tract food so all three get it. I emailed Purina and they will send me coupons every few month, all I have to do is email them. That helps take some of the sting out of the cost. I also buy it anytime I can find it a little cheaper. They are WELL worth the cost though!

Ground beef and chicken seems to have gone through the roof! Eric HATES the tubes of GB but I use it for spaghetti and stuff where the meat is all crunched up. It is getting to the point where it is almost cheaper for us to eat out than eat at home for some meals!

Apples. My favorite variety has gone from .99 cents a pound to $ 1.59. Needless to say I am not buying those.

Lots of grocery items. But milk gets my attention b/c not only is it going up, it changes almost daily. Every time I run in for milk it's a different price. Just like gas.

Some of the price hikes have been a blessing in that I really don't need those potato chips or candy. I have to admit it's been helping my diet.

I think the potatoes were probably the biggest shock. There usually seems to be a loss leader on milk so I can usually buy it at an ok price. Two half gallons are often cheaper than a gallon. That big e-coli scare this summer put tomato prices pretty high. My tomatoes plants never produced like I hoped they would. Fresh apples seem to keep going up. I don't let the prices keep me from buying that or other healthy fruits and veggies for the kids. Junk food really isn't a bargain when you start filtering in health effects.

I guess something else I noticed has been the hike in meat prices. Again, that's sort of a blessing in that Im not tempted to buy more than we can eat so food doesn't go to waste as much.

Fresh vegetables - especially red peppers. Broccoli was $5.00 for 3 small stalks Friday. I didn't buy any.

Sunflower birdseed has gone up a lot these past few months.
Another thing was a surprise.....we have been buying flat twin sheets for quilt backing at church, and always paid Walmart's price of $2.96 In this past month, they have gone up to $4.00.

The worst thing for me is that everything is going up. EVERYTHING. Oh yeah, except my salary which was essentially decreased last year when they changed my health care plan to a PPO which costs me a lot more out-of-pocket. That was probably my biggest 'thing' since I had a baby this year. I've got a ton of bills coming in for that compared to when I had Nick. I did put money into a flex spending account for medical expenses but I could have put in a little bit more.

DH does the shopping, so I honestly don't know...
Fruit must have been quite high for awhile because he quit buying it, and he LOVES fresh fruit! It either leveled off or he just decided to bite the bullet because he's buying it again, now.

Pet food. Not only has the sticker price gone up, but the 20-pound bag now weighs four pounds less.

Which reminds me . . . I never paid much attention to product sizes before, but now I'm checking. That "bargain" tuna wasn't such a good deal when I discovered the can weighed less than the other brand.

In the past 5 years the cat litter I buy has gone from $3.99 to $12.98 (20 lb bag). I can't find any similar litter anywhere so I guess I am stuck paying it.

Seems like everything has gone up around 15% to 20% or even more in some cases. I've really noticed it with things like soda and paper products.

I was going to say, "Not much", as I live fairly simply, don't buy a lot of stuff.

And we old farts are supposed to be cutting back, to leave less burden on our offspring to clear after our demise ... haven't found a way to take any of it with me. And don't know whether I'd have any need of it, even if I could!

But - 10 kg.(22 lb.) of all-purp. flour for the bread machine was $8.00 and change - often about $8.39 ...lately has gone up to well over $11.00.

Last week son and I found some at $8.97 or so ... each bought a bag ... and I bought another at another store of same name a couple of days later.

I had a bag of high-gluten flour that I'd bought a few weeks ago, at not too bad a price, after the major price rise.

Now have them plus about four smaller bags that I bought recently at more or less the old price.

Plus a couple of bags of whole wheat ... and I only use one cup of that with three of all-purp. per loaf.

Looks like I won't be able to die till half way through next year, at least!

Oh, heck ... it'll have to be later than that ... I just planted asparagus this spring and have about 4 dozen plants ... and they take three years to produce any quantity of spears!

Like do develop those problems!

Picked up a "great" deal, Breyers ice cream, 2 for $5. I thought my hand had suddenly gotten larger, then I noticed the ice cream package was smaller.

The price of all groceries seems to have gone up. That, with utilities and meds are making it harder to get by.

We have 3 teenagers and they are eating us out of house and home. Well, the boys are. DD eats like a bird. We do our big grocery shopping at a warehouse and that helps a lot. However, even there we've noticed increases. We have to look at sale items when making choices. Milk prices have increased, and so has cheese. We can get good deals on produce, such as grapes for 99 cents a lb. We buy our bread from the bakery outlet and what great deals!

Individual yogurt cups were 175 gm. (454 gm. = 1 lb.), then 150 gm., then 125 gm., 113 gm., recently have gone down to 100 gm.

If they get much smaller, we'll need a magnifying glass to see 'em!

Oh, but think of the health benefit ...

... we've been eating way too much, you know ...

... leading to obesity!

They're helping us reduce our intake!

Public service - that's the idea!

Dh and I go to the store with a list. We buy what we need and don't look at the price. Just look at total when we get home.Then comes the shock

I'm changing some of my buying habits.

I shop mostly at Krogers, so I check their ads before I shop, and also I shop on Tuesdays to get the Senior discount.

Last week my "bargains" were:

Lipton tea bags (100) $3/reg $3.99
Fresh Bartlett pears 89Â¢lb/reg $1.79
Kroger Sliced Cheese $2.99 rather than Kraft $4.29
Kroger Cream Cheese $2.66 rather than Kraft $3.65
LandOLakes margarine (My preferred brand) 10 for $10.00 so I Stock up the freezer
Kroger Calcium BOGO

This week I will buy:
Private Selection Ice Cream (56 oz.) 2 for $5.00

These are 10for$10 buys:
Rotisserie Chicken Breasts
Chicken of the Sea Albacore Tuna
Hamburger buns

The best buy this week is Eggs (18ct.) 3 for $5.00.

I feel for Sheryl in Oregon and others with large familys, but there are ways to minimize when it is necessary.

Two weeks ago at Sharp Shopper I got 5 lbs white potatoes for $2.89.

It helps that I am not a big eater, but I do have to have ice cream and some cookies and I've given up chips.
