Wet some towels, sheets in cold water and put them in your freezer. Then cover her with them.

Great idea, Monica! They froze quickly, and now that she's walking around they stay on her, whereas ice packs won't. I got the vet. He said to hose her down, which I did. Thanks!

Yes,I would use the hose,that's what we did with my one horse that got overheated once,just keep it running over her for a bit.....so sorry to hear this happened.I worry about that here with mine.Man...our fur babies are sure having problems this week!Hopefully you got her temp down by now,Good Luck with her.Briards have a heavy coat,don't they? Not sure as I've never seen one in person,just in pics.I always liked them,but I can't have one of each breed! LOL! Wish I could!

Yes, she has a very heavy coat. Very long and very thick. Makes it a bit of a challenge to take her temperature. :-/

She drank some ice water and is walking around covered with an ice-cold towel. Her panting sounds more normal now. I'm encouraged.

How very scary,glad shes doing better.Hopefully she will be back to her old self in no time.

So far we've been lucky and haven't had that experience. I hope Angel recovers quickly. I'll have to remember Monica's suggestion about the frozen towels though just in case. That's a great idea.

It's going to be 90 here today so we turned on the air conditioning. My dog is laying right in front of the AC vent enjoying the cool breeze.

Thanks, Mcmann. I have to leave for work at two o'clock. I was so afraid she wouldn't be okay by then, but she seems fine. She's back to her old self--even barked out the window at whatever (things no human can see). She hasn't had the cold towels off her for long, though, so I'll see how she's doing after my shower.

We had an Alaskan Husky that happened to while we were gone. The person taking care of him knew what to do so we were ok. But we did get his coat trimed and thined each summer. The undercoat was quite thick. It really made a differece. Yes there was shade, and water and a place to get out of the heat/sun-but dummy would rather lay in the sun. He love to lay in front of a big fan. They don't like dessert heat. We just made sure he had plenty of liquids.

You've gotten some good advice here.

I have two kiddie swimming pools in my yard for my dogs for two reasons: 1) they always have somewhere to get a drink of water and 2) when they get hot they can cook themselves off. I started doing this when Ruby, our old border collie, got too old to climb in and out of the livestock watering troughs. I recommend this to anyone with dogs.

The pools get dirty and green stuff grows fast but they (the pools) are easy to clean and best of all, they are cheap.

My dog was very upset with me today when I wouldn't play ball with him. He would follow me around the yard and drop the ball at my feet, but it was terribly hot here, over 90, and he was panting. I was afraid of this happening to him so we walked later at 8. I hate this weather. Where's spring?

Here's an excerpt from a long article on avoiding heatstroke, which focuses on use of ice water. I learned this years ago but it isn't very well-known. Hope your furbaby is OK.

"If you suspect heat stroke in your pet, seek Veterinary attention immediately! Use cool water, not ice water, to cool your pet. (Very cold water will cause constriction of the blood vessels and impede cooling.) Do not aid cooling below 103 F degrees - some animals can actually get HYPOthermic, too cold. Offer ice cubes for the animal to lick on until you can reach your Veterinarian. Just because your animal is cooled and "appears" OK, do NOT assume everything is fine. Internal organs such as liver, kidneys, brain, etc., are definitely affected by the body temperature elevation, and blood tests and veterinary examination are needed to assess this. There is also a complex blood problem, called DIC (Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation) that can be a secondary complication to heat stroke that can be fatal."

A little OT -I am one of those who keeps several flyers in my glove compartment to put under a wiper blade if there is a dog left in a car and have contacted management to make an announcement. And I did raise a ruckus when a toddler and a crying infant were in a car IN THE SUN while the mom was an upscale nursery buying flowers. Boy, she was mad at ME!!!!

Poor Angel, Susan you must have been worried sick. I'm glad she's doing better. Thank goodness you noticed her in time. I worked in the yard most of yesterday and the dogs were out there with me. At some point I noticed Buddy laying in the sun panting hard and breathing pretty shallow. He had not been running and playing, but he seemed exhausted. I brought all three dogs inside and didn't let them go back outside til about 7pm. Thankfully he is okay. I'm just glad I saw him when I did.

Lori, the two german shepherds we used to have loved their kiddie pools. They used to run thru them or sometimes one of them just liked to sit in them. Both of those dogs have been gone for three years. I've bought little pools every year since then, but the dogs we have now don't want anything to do with them. I decided not to buy any this year. :(
