Did Pool Company get Gray Plaster job right?
Comments (14)It looks pretty bad looking at the pool fill picture. However, having said that when our neighbors got their quartz aggregate pool plastered with blue quartz, it was green for the first 4 days and you couldn't see any blue. When our pool company signed our contract we told them we wanted 20-30% grey and they said no problem. Then when it came time to pick out the tile and certify our plaster choice they told us that Grey with cause a lot of molting of the color as a result of the white plaster cream coming to the top and suggested it was not a good idea and then gave us a piece of legalise document to sign that basically said we were aware that it was going to look bad but we still wanted to go forward with it. We didn't sign it and later on fired the pool company and went with a pebble finish which is what we would have done originally if we were told this at the contract sign. I think you are getting the "acid startup" confused with "acid wash". The only way to do a "true" acid wash is to empty the pool, put on rubber boots, gloves and hip huggers, pour muriatic acid down the side and then with a brush, brush the side of the pool with the acid. The acid will bubble and steam comes up and you can see all kinds of things getting dissolved. Starting a pool up with a very acidic pH is pretty standard. However, with pebble finishs where the pebbles are not affected much by the acid, an acid wash helps clean off the plaster glaze off the rocks. With plaster, even the color quartz, they typically just fill it up and you brush all the loose plaster glaze over the aggregate into your filter. I guess there is some times an option with darker high quantity quartz aggregate to expose the quartz aggregate with a post-plaster acid wash as an option. It doesn't sound or look like thats what they did though right? I believe that with a strong acid startup and lots of brushing, much of that white plaster "cream" will brush off and you will see the grey color beneath it and it will look much better than the first picture. However, my understanding of the grey colored plaster is that you still will see color variations and it will never be perfect as it just part of the problem with going with colored plaster and quartz aggregate finishes. I'm sure that there is a skill of not working the plaster too much to cause the white cream to come up over the grey but some variations will always be apparent even if the plaster'r was an expert....See MoreAm I going to regret having plain white plaster?
Comments (36)I too have debated this issue. At original meeting w/PB, we had him quote the overall master plan. PB quoted with white plaster but gave us a price sheet with the upgrade-should we want to go with a differnt finish, SAM lights etc. When we got the quote back, we were surprised that the whole plan was in our budget to do as is. Now that sticker shock has worn off, what is another $1600 for quartz added to plaster, or $$3161 for sunstone colored plaster, or $4578 for aggregate finish? Unfortunately, we have other expenses, about 10k already not in the pool bid (fence, electric reroute, paver deck). Where does one stop spending when money is an object? Of coarse, my DH put it to me like this. If none of these other finishes existed, would I still love my pool? Both my neighbors have white plaster finishes (built by the PB I am using)and they are beautiful. My PB showed me photos of 14 different pools all with differnt "colors" to them. Come to find out, they were all white plaster. Depending on surrounding vegitation, cloud cover (or not) shadow/shade, sun location, can effect the color of a pool dramatically. We are going with white plaster afterall. If somewhere down the road I really hate it, I'll save up for it and get it re-done. If it is in your budget, go for it. If not, your pool will still be beautiful....See MoreGreen/blue/grey cabinets? Would you do it again?
Comments (62)Love this thread, thanks for bringing it back. My kitchen was done 8 years ago and I SOOO wish that Semihandmade had been around then (from DIY2's link). They would have saved me a lot of money and frustration with contractors. Anyway, my cabs are white and awhile ago, I saw a brilliant dark royal blue kitchen in a magazine. I thought maybe I'll do that some day, but don't think that's very realistic of me. However, it is time to repaint the walls, so I appreciate this discussion of color. They've been a cheerful cantaloupe and am thinking about a pale creamy yellow. The more dramatic option of the deep blue is also attractive. What to do......See MoreBlue-gray faux-marble countertop?
Comments (8)Hello MizLizzie These are all relevant concerns and great questions -- we'd be happy to offer some assistance. For other Cambria designs with cool blue hues paired with creamy tones, we also would recommend Praa Sands, Weybourne, and Torquay. Be sure to check out our inspiration gallery for photos of kitchens using these designs. As far as pricing goes, we hear your concerns. Did you know that Cambria offers many personal financing options? You also mentioned past experience with resin pooling in your quartz countertops, which we are sorry to hear. We do not accept aesthetic deviations such as this within our products, and would like to learn more about your experience. Our customer care team would be interested in speaking with you further to address some of the concerns you have mentioned. Feel free to send us a private message with your phone number as well as the best time to contact you viaour Houzz profile. Otherwise, if you would prefer to contact us directly, call our customer care line direct at 1-866-CAMBRIA from 7am-7pm Mondays through Fridays, and from 8am to 1pm Saturdays.
