Where Is My...

dining room table leaf??? I really need it for Christmas brunch; it's not where I have always kept it since I purchased the table. I even made a felt jacket to store it in. I am really creative in space utilization but this is ridiculous.

Just venting!

Ok...Is it behind a door? Under the bed? In the garage or near your sewing machine? Closet or laundry room? Good luck, I have a feeling you'll find it soon. Merry Christmas!

I can't find mine either... Do you suppose there's a table leaf thief out there some where???

When I first got the set I used to keep the table leaf on top of the china cabinet... After I almost broke my neck getting it down I started keeping it in the coat closet by the front door... It ain't there now... Guess I'll have to go into search mode tomorrow...

I think because of the shipping method RC uses, it takes quite a while for packages to arrive... they are sent by French Post, which is like our regular mail. I wish they offered a faster shipping method, but as of now, they don't. The good thing is... their bulbs arrive in decent shape, even after the long trip. I think 15 days is unrealistic... it's more like 20-25 days! But have no fear... they will arrive! My order took almost a month to arrive, and that was the replacement order. And still, the bulbs were in good shape. Wow, Palmcoast! 25% is a lot of mislabeled bulbs! And if I'm not mistaken, you're not the only customer to receive mislabeled bulbs from MZ! I often wonder what happens from the time the crates of bulbs from the growers arrive at the distributors, to the time they actually pack them for individual orders and ship them out... how do all these bulbs end up in the wrong bags or with the wrong tags? I wonder if it's because they need to hire extra help during the busy season, and the new workers are inexperienced...

My concern is that it is somewhere between the inner basket and the outer tub but did not use the correct terminology in my post. I am worried that it might pierce the outer tub as it did in my top loader years ago, "clog up the works" or puncture a seal in another way. In wore the suit 3 days prior and the wire was in place but I did notice that it had momentarily poked through it's cloth casing. I adjusted it and made a mental note that the casing needed stitching (but i did not get around to it before I washed it). I noticed that there was a slight rubbing/scraping sound during that load of all bathing suits but i thought it was due to something else in the contents. I have not heard it again in subsequent loads that I ran before i realize the wire was missing. I do question however how the wire got out of the fine mesh lingerie bag. That has also happened before but it got stuck on the bag. Arggg!

Maire Cate, I lied! It was The Kitchn, NOT the Test Kitchen recipe! I've used so many recipes for turkey from the Test Kitchen (am a subscriber to the site now and to Cooks Illustrated for years prior) that I automatically wrote test kitchen, sorry!! The recipe I used is linked below, it is both easier and tastier than the test kitchen methods I have used (brining, roasting on a bed of veggies, roasting for just a few hours, etc.) The Kitchn method is absolutely the easiest one I have ever used, and one of the best, if not the best. I had a fresh turkey of almost 15 pounds for ten meat eaters. It was rinsed inside and out, giblets and neck removed from cavity (the former in a bag, thankfully), and dried, then sprinkled all over with salt and coarse ground pepper. No stuffing was put in the turkey. The oven was preheated to 450. I poured two cups of Swanson's chicken broth in the bottom of a roasting pan with deep ridges on the bottom and set the turkey in breast up. I untied the legs per instructions. The bird went in the oven on the next to lowest rack setting and temp immediately turned down to 350 degrees. After an hour I basted it with the juices and tented the breast, which was already a beautiful golden brown. You are supposed to take the turkey out and close the oven door when basting, so I did that and basted it two more times about an hour apart. The turkey was ready after 16 min. per pound, I was timing it but there was also a pop up timer in the bird as well, and I used a meat thermometer to make sure it was done. I took the bird out and it rested for nearly an hour while the sides heated up and we had our first course. My SIL's husband (she is my brother's widow) carved and the meat--- every bit of it---- was moist and flavorful and delicious! Best of all, the pan drippings made fabulous gravy, which I made by combining unsalted butter and flour in a large, straight-sided skillet into a roux that I browned a bit instead of leaving white. I used it to thicken the pan juices (which already included broth) by adding the broth to the skillet. I had about three cups of broth/drippings, which contained rendered fat, so I made more roux than I would have for liquid without fats. After thickening the gravy I added about four ounces of half and half and two of those small containers of Knorr concentrated, home style chicken broth. They are about 2" x 1.5" and come in a four pack. This method has to be tweaked on site for the amount of fat in the drippings but makes absolutely delicious gravy. The meal WAS wildly successful, thank heavens, and we did not have a lot of turkey leftover as our young men (ages 13, 16, 22, and 25) ate like there was no tomorrow :-). But there will be enough leftovers for HK to make a turkey pie or two for the coming week, unless we eat it all in open faced sandwiches with that fabulous gravy before the day is out! My reno put my range in between two windows. I decided it was ok after seeing lots of inspiration photos where it looks good. The key, I think, is having ~5" of space between the rough opening for the window and the edge of the hood. That 5" is enough room for most mouldings, or tile (if you're tiling to the ceiling), or just a sense of breathing room (the range and hood immediately next to the window would look cramped without that 5", IMO).

The coat closet near your front/back door? That is where I keep mine. (But, my two leaves are still leaning up against the wall in the dining room, where they have been since after Thanksgiving.....in plain view.....so I know where they are......what am I waiting for??? for them to put themselves back in the closet?)

What about a narrow space between a large piece of furniture and a wall? Did you check the garage?

well it's chaos around here.....so who knows...
Latke grease all over the kitcen, christmas presents piled high, chicago kids here and the Iowa kids last night for dinner. do you know how much room 5 teen aged boys take.....but they are good at putting the leaves in the table!!!
Could you have put that leaf to another use....

Wood can warp due to uneven moisture in the air because many are finished only on one side. I store my spare leaves in big trash bags.

May be you are not looking for a big trash bag?

For temperary situation, HD will custom cut a plywood plank for you cheap.

I don't know but it probably ran off with my red tablecloth. The one I only ever use at Christmas, the one I always hang on a hanger in the front hall closet, the one that I have 16 matching napkins for, the one that I have now spent way more time than I should have looking for. It's only 8:30 in the morning, and thought of having to iron my white linen one makes me feel like having a stiff drink!

Jane, I can so identify with the tablecloth situation. I put out my red (no iron) tablecloth at Thanksgiving rather than deal with ironing one of my linen cloths. My mom said my table looked lovely anyway, so I was satisfied.

Oh, you make me feel a little better about not being able to find my cc card, calling my Dh to have him look for it to no avail, and finally finding it in my back pocket, which I thought for sure I had already looked in.

Well, I still haven't found it but my sister has kindly offered to bring (and iron!!!!) her white linen cloth - so I can live with that. My late MIL did all the linens for her church, so she had a mangle. Would have loved to have had access to that today! Merry Christmas one and all and may all your trials be as minor as a lost tablecloth.

A mangle would be sooo nice. I'd iron all those napkins then as well as the tablecloths. If I had a mangle I might even iron sheets. No, that's a lie. I wouldn't go that far. LOL.

Cathy I'm so glad you found it!! I can't believe that's where it was, but I should. One year I was going crazy looking for the rest of ours and finally had to count to see that they were all already in the table. Sheesh. Ours holds 3 leaves. The leaves have those posts on them that fit into holes in the other leaves or the table so I was having trouble understanding how you could just put a plain plank of wood in instead. Wouldn't work for our table. So, Merry Christmas... with your leaf in. LOL.

Took me all day yesterday to find my extra martini glasses. I have 2 identical boxes of them but could only find one box. Hubby insisted I must have loaned them out. Nope. Hubby finally found them; he had moved them off the shelf and put them up in the rafters. Go figure.

Well, my time finding the the leaf was a waste! I only one guest who sat at the beautifully decorated dining room table.

It was 81 degrees here yesterday and guest chose the lanai, which thankfully I had cleaned and set up for brunch. I even dusted the ceiling fan which I had to turn on because it got warm.

All worked out for me, I hope for you also.

Okay. Ahem. My 87 year old father called to tell me that he had been looking at pictures from last Christmas and there was a white tablecloth - not a red one. Red runner, red napkins, white tablecloth. OMG - he was right! I had conjured up a red tablecloth. I now remember buying a white one instead because it would be more versatile. I have a bronze one with matching napkins that I bought for Thanksgiving, but my Christmas, no-iron tablecloth is white. I am such an idiot. My family however has been provided with hours of amusement...

I am thinking that I should make a Christmas 2012 "reminder" list for myself of where I put things - like laser labels and extra Christmas cards. I'm always SO SURE I'll remember where they are come next year, but, well - reality bites, as they say! My table leaves only fit under our bed, so I'm safe there. I bought wheels for a couple of pallets and keep meaning to attach them, so that I can just roll the leaves out every year. Haven't done it yet, thought!

Virginia, I make a Christmas review list each year (what went well, what needs improvement) and I take pics of holiday arrangements so I won't have to reinvent the wheel. I also label bins of decorations. With all those precautions, I didn't think it was necessary to notate where I put the darn table leaf as, like you, mine will only fit under the bed.
