NYE party has moved to my house-yikes!

On the NYE menu thread I wrote that I would be happy to stay home and have my tenderloin and lobster while in my sweats and slipper. My wish came true, as another couple called and we agreed not to go to her daughters but to hang at my place. I may call my next door neighbors to join us also, so we would be 6.

Now please help me round out my menu. I would like to avoid the stores tomorrow. I am thinking a buffet with a carving station. I will roast the beef rare and here is what I have on hand:

Bagautte bread ( I can't spell but you know what I mean)

Rye bread

Remoulade sauce

Cooked shrimp and cocktail sauce. I will add a shot of vodka to make it Marryier.

Herring in cream sauce ( a must on NYE for good luck)

Cold lobster-**any dipping sauce for it?

A freezer full of other stuff.....

Any thoughts on a veggie? I have frozen green beans, asparagus, corn, fresh brussel sprouts, and spring mix lettuce. Can I roast the asparagus if it is frozen? Does anyone have AnnT's green bean recipe?

I also have frozen bing cherries and blueberries on hand for a desert, if I have time. I may make the summer torte. I also have cheese pierogis....simmer the fruit to a sauce for the pierogi?

I am writing out loud here but since you all know me, I think thats ok.

The remoulade for the lobster.
The asparagus will be fine roasted....but perhaps green beans with caramelized onions cooked with balsamic so it gets reduced....
Green salad with a vinaigrette....ora creamy blue cheese or -parmesian dressing...
You need a starch....rice pilaf is good....do you have mushrooms and sundried tomatoes?.
Cheese and crackers for before....wine? Champagne?
If it wren't snowy I would be tempted to crash!

Yeah, but can you make it a pajama party so you can still wear your sweats and slippers???? :-)

Your menu sounds good.
I don't like to roast asparagus after it's been frozen, it just seems too soft to me. What about baking in a cheese sauce? Or just roast the brussel sprouts. Easy.

I'd keep dessert light since the main course is very rich.
Toss some lemon in there with the cherry/berry mix, or just only lightly sweeten them (boy, that's a horrible sentence, please ignore the grammar).

In early October a friend of mine dug a clump of POINT OF VIEW as a gift plant and set it on the top of a post bare root. The individual never placed the order so when I was out to his place in March Robbie gave me the clump that had set bare root in full sun on top of the post and I took it home and planted it with others that were dug with some soil on the plants. By July I could not tell which were bare root for 5 months and which were not. I would dig and wash and trim everything. I would trim the tops to 4" inches and the roots the same but many are uncomfortable with trimming the roots that way so do what you are comfortable. All the roots will die anyway and the only benefit of the old roots is to act as anchors. I would get the plastic open mesh bags and store each cultivar in a mesh bag so it could breath. Then I would store them in a cool place that did not freeze but where they would get good air circulation. As long as the roots are kept dry they will be fine bare root and they won't grow during the winter months anyway. In the spring when the ground temperatures remain at 54 degrees F. or above I would plant them.

I agree that burglaries can happen in any neighborhood. I'd be more concerned about the crime on the streets. What city are you talking about? If it's West Phila., I could tell you a lot because my daughter and her husband bought a house there last summer to be near the university for her graduate school and his commute to DE. It's the same thing there, nice neighborhoods surrounded by poverty and its problems which unfortunately know no boundaries. The 3 local universities have their own security patrolling the streets in addition to the local police department. The elementary school in her neighborhood is one of the best in the city because although it's a public school,it receives funding and remains affiliated with U of P's school of education. For high school most of the kids either go to private schools or one of the charter schools in the city. It sounds like you'd have that to consider too. You need to investigate the stability of the neighborhood you're interested in. A friend of mine lives in another part of the city which in the past 10 years has seen a bit of a turnover. Absentee landlords have bought up real estate and rented the houses or converted some of them into apartments. My friend complains that the tenants, not having a vested interest in the property or the neighborhood, have let appearances slide, and she's worried about property values. Living in the city has its pros and cons like anyplace else. My daughter's enjoying being close to so many things you don't get in our rural area. There are forums you can find on line to inquire about specific towns and you can ask about the safety issue there.

Don't cut off all contact with your children, always remember them at their birthdays with a phone call and a card with $5-$10 dollars in it. Just concentrate on getting your own head together. It is now time for you, so even if you have to deal with the kids, you can do it in a calm rational manner. Like stated above, try going to a house of worship, take craft classes, yoga classes or something through your park district to occupy your time. You don't say if you have a job, if you don't, get one, at least a part time job, to get out of the house. That way you will have a little spending money to buy some new clothes. Don't let anyone talk you out of it either. Good luck! You can do it.

rhizo, I live in West Australia and I get so many little geckos at my place but strangely never used to get them much at other houses here. I love them, and have stumbled across little baby geckos in various places too which are super cute!(usually somewhere dark like in the garden shed) I can't remember the technical names but there are two types I usually see, some little black ones, and some flesh coloured ones (almost translucent). skinks I'll usually set down in a garden bed and the geckos I'll let them go against a wall so they can climb up to safety - they seem to always want to head upwards (really cute when they stick out their front legs to grab a hold of a wall) :) Im not sure why there are so many here at this house and I'm always finding gecko eggs lying around in odd places too.

Deanna, sweats and slippers are approved apparel for tonight. They go with lobster.

Linda, hop in the car and come over, I have the room. You too Deanna.

After a good nights sleep, the menu now is:

Herring in cream
Lobster with butter
Roast tenderloin
Rolls, breads, etc.(Rolls are rising already)
Roasted truffeled asparagus with parmesan topping.
Mushroom Ragout, posted by Catlover on the tenderloin thread a few weeks ago.
Beer, wine, etc.

Sweets are still being considered. Is chocolate mousse light?

And not one thing needs to be bought. All from the pantry or freezer. Now all Dad needs to do is get some more beer. What a hardship.

Geez, Peppi, if Elery didn't have to work tomorrow, we'd crash!

I do like to roast frozen asparagus, it's the most palatable way to eat it as long as I roast it until it's crunchy.

do you till have that bottle of raspberry vodka I left when I visited? You could add that to the chocolate mousse, or make a chocolate raspberry sauce for the summer torte...

Your menu sounds wonderful. Isn't it amazing how a good night's sleep can bring it all together?

I've decided to make a "real" dinner tonight rather than munchies. Baked sea scallops, broccoli/cranberry salad and Ann_T's baguette.
Scallops are thawing, salad is made and the bread is on the first rise. Simple, but delicious!
Sweats will also be the required attire for the evening.
