Slipcovers - Advice needed - White or Natural?

My DD is a professional seamstress and will be making new custom slipcovers for the furniture in my LR. (Loveseat and 2 wingback chairs.) We're thinking either matelasse or brushed twill but not sure which would be best as my big fat cat can absolutely shred steel! I'm trying to find something his claws can't dig into so easily.

My current slipcovers are "natural" in color and I've always been happy with them (until Dudley, the cat, shredded one of the corners), but now DD suggests I go with white so as not to compete with so many other colors in the room. (The walls are currently painted a deep RL red that DH chose before we married. I find it very dark and depressing, so after 5 years of marriage, am definitely going lighter and brighter this spring!)

Anyway, for those of you who have white slipcovered furniture, do you find it easy to live with? Have you had difficulty finding coordinating fabrics? My favorite pillow is a needlepoint with ivory background and I'm so afraid it won't work with the white. Also, I guess using white would probably nix the ivory drapes I had thought about putting up. In other words, white seems more difficult to coordinate with than a neutral. Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks for the location of the bamboo nursery. That was going to be my next question. I want to view it before I consider planting any of it and bring some of my picture with me as well. I'm not a big fan of sea grape. I like them natural in the wild, but not in my yard. Its just me. I do like the tropical screen idea - sort of what I want - would love something that "flowers" - but again realize I may be limited due to the height requirement. I'll post another pic of the space between the back of the house and the fence shortly so you can see how wide it is (or rather, "isn't"..LOLOL...). I REALLY appreciate everyone's suggestions. I am struggling what to do here. It's a real gardening challenge. I'm downtown St. Pete so in a city sized cramped yard.

Off-White Slipcovered Sofas

I have had an off white/ light beige colored slip covered sectional for nearly 4 years. Taking the slipcovers off to wash is a pain in the behind, and I have to do it at least once every other month, thanks to my 3 kids that seem to always spill things on it. They have some stains that I can't get out, so I'm about ready to order new slipcovers from JC Penneys for them. I did buy a 5 year stain protection plan, so I can replace them free, but now I have to find the paperwork that I put in a safe place. But since I had a newborn when I got them, I can't remember where that safe place is, anyhow I digress. Don't listen to the liars in blogland, it's a real big pain to take them off, but even bigger pain to get them back on. It's an all day project in my house, and usually a few broken nails. But, I sure am glad I can take them off. I can't believe how dirty they get and I'm happy I can actually get them clean, instead of having a dark sofa that doesn't show dirt, but is dirty.

'Can't help you with the colors, but I just wanted to say that there was a topic here or in painting within the last 2 weeks where someone had painted their kitchen ceiling blue and the the blue was reflecting down on the top of their white walls and cabinets. I can't seem to find the exact topic so I don't know how the matter was resolved. Maybe someone else will remember.

tnfarm - wanted to get back to you. I washed my white cotton sofa slipcover and it came out great. I dissolved about six scoops of Oxy-clean in a bowl of hot water, stirred it around for a few minutes and added that to the cold water in the machine. I also used detergent. I let the machine run for a few minutes then stopped it and restarted it the next day. They came out great. Best thing is I had these strange orange/yellow discoloration spots on one of the cushions, I thought it was from bleach and would never come off but it did. I think instructions do say to use Oxy-clean with hot water but I didn't want to risk these slipcovers shrinking, and they came out really better than they ever have.

As with paint, if you go to a fabric store and start looking at white fabrics you'll soon see that there are soooooo many shades and textures of white fabric. I'd start there and see if you can find an ivory or creamy off-white you like. As for the drapes, you could still use them with white furniture but maybe your daughter could sew a fabric band to the bottom to add a little color?

I have a twill natural slip cover. It what not expensive and has not held up the best with the cats unfortunately. The good news is I can and have bleached it, it just has some holes and looks shabby.

I also have an orange matelasse quilt that i have been putting on a small loveseat I have in the kitchen and that has held up really well. I woulc go with that type of fabric if cats are a concern. My cats don't try to scratch it at all. I would probably test the white and the natural in the wash first and rub it on the cats. :)

Is Dudley white? I recovered a pair of chair seats in a white matelasse. The fabric has held up well, but the cats (who are black, orange, and a tortie) love to sleep on them, so the hair issue is a constant battle. I just bought a darker, patterned fabric to recover them again.

Just keep in mind that if the cat isn't a shade of white, you'll be picking off hair all day, every day.

I have a twill slipcover, and the fur doesn't seem to cling to it nearly as badly. Do NOT use a chenille of any kind. Pet hair sticks to it like it was velcro, and the texture is too appealing for kitty claws.
