Florida in Michigan, thanks Arlene!

As you can guess, it's winter here in Michigan. Right now it's snowing, it's been snowing for 6 days and is supposed to snow every day for the next week at least. It's 27F and there isn't a citrus growing, that's for sure.

I'm also a bit behind in everything, go figure. Anyway, I got a box last week from Florida. It was from Arlene! She had a never/seldom used KitchenAid slicing attachment and though I could use it with all my canning and wedding cooking and etc. Could I ever!

The best part about the box, though, was this:

Yes, those are Meyer lemons. Nice fresh ones, aren't they beautiful? They are this fresh:

Oh, and do I have plans for those lemons. I have a Cook's Illustrated with a recipe for that Shaker Lemon pie that you slice the lemons and use the whole fruit, rind and all. Oh yeah, these are definitely going to be put to good use.

So, thank you, Arlene, for thinking of me and for being such a good friend. And especially for sending some Florida sunshine to Michigan in the cold and snow!

That was very nice of Arlene. And I can't think of anyone that will put that slicer to better use than you Annie. Looking forward to seeing your Shaker Lemon Pie.

Mmmmmmm....fresh-picked. Do post the pie recipe. I was ecstatic when Costco had Meyer Lemons last year...everyone's getting marmalade for Christmas.

Of course, your season is going to be shorter than you used to have in Pensacola, so you'll want more bang for your buck, right? Winter sowing annuals or purchasing annuals is a good bet for nectar plants, like annual salvias, annual daisies, annual verbenas, sunflowers, zinnias, cosmos, etc., that bloom quick and for a long time. Perennials that go in this year, may not do much until next year, or even the year after. I'd try some lavendar in a good size pot. It will grow quickly and flower quickly, and the butts love it. Dill would be a great host plant in your cooler summer conditions. It doesn't like it here for very long. Rue is hardy there, too, and if you buy nice plants now, they'll grow and be hosting BSTs and GSTs fast (do you get GSTs up there?). I'd also see if you could purchase some tropical milkweed in pots for the Monarchs. Our FAQs has good info on both nectar and host plants. We have a lot of other folks who garden in similar conditions living in Illinois, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and other northern states who can help you out, too. My first bloom is open this morning!!! I have 11 more getting ready to open. I can hardly believe it. I planted rootstock in the fall because I know next to nothing about daylilies and thought this was the best way to learn and to also get enough plants for my beds economically. I figure I can replace these with better stock and varieties I love as I learn more. I just want to thank all who helped me last fall when I needed help getting my beds prepared. You guys rock.

Will figs grow in Michigan?

yes, depending upon your climate (I'm not originally from Mi, so I'm not sure where Owosso is) and how much work you're willing to do to grow figs, it is possible. I'm in Saint Clair Shores (which puts me North-east of Detroit, and north of Canada) and I have one fig in the ground and a number of figs in pots. The one in the ground needs to be protected each winter and the potted ones are brought inside and stored in a cold-preserving room off of my basement for the winter. There are a number of ways of protecting in-ground planted figs over-winter, and they all require a bit of work. Potted might be a good place to start if you have a place to keep the fig in the winter (an attached, unheated garage can be a viable option). You'll find there are a few of us in this forum growing figs in Michigan (and at least one that I can recall in Chicago as well). ~Chills

Gorgeous blooms, Chris! We still haven't had real summer weather in Upstate NY either. I don't mind (I'm not a heat lover), but I'm glad I'm not trying to grow tomatoes or peppers this year! We're having the coolest summer since something like 1918 up here. On the plus side, the things that do bloom are lasting much longer than they would if it were hot. And I think it's giving my transplanted daylilies a better chance to settle in with less stress. Laurel

Oooooh I love Meyer lemons and those look beautiful! Enjoy the new gadget, but definitely tell us what you do with the lemons, they are a treasure.

Oh what wonderful friends we have in this Cooking Forum. Those lemons look fabulous especially in the dead of winter. I look forward to your recipes also Annie.

Annie, you are a hoot! I'll be making some lemon bars to put on the Christmas cookie tray just to use up some more. Luckily the lemon crop this year isn't as big as last year's. Smaller too because of the drought, but they taste delightful!

Nicely done!

Does anyone remember a thread in the past year or so specifically asking what to do with Meyer lemons? Perhaps my google skills are lacking, but I can't seem to find it. I'm interested because just the other day I for the first time saw them at the supermarket. I love lemons in general, so I'm interested in giving these a try.

Annie along with the delicious lemons, think of the brightness that beautiful yellow brings to your kitchen...almost like sunshine..ok so I"m exaggerating a bit..Anything to brighten up six days of snowfall....

Kitchen appliances--how nice!! And the bonus ain't bad either.

I must add that I am getting "Michigan in Florida" next week as it's suppose to be 26 degrees with possible snow flurries on Monday!
