What are we looking at here? Is it your bedroom? How old; what's your situation? Married?--Not? -- kids? What do you want out of the room. You can WOW in a room without any consideration or relationship to your personality or current position in life, but I don't think that would be a good idea.

Have you looked at the Bedrooms thread in the Gallery for inspiration pictures? There are tons of photos of gorgeous bedrooms in there with lots of ooolala accessorizing.

It looks like a nice start with the gold and black & white toile : ) Beautiful bed!

One thing I'd do is line/back the curtains so the light shining through doesn't wash them out and the pattern is even. I'd also panel each side of the window with a white sheer between. Maybe the sheer would block enough of the light behind the panels; not sure. Then you can pull the toile panels more to the sides and have some fullness to the drape. It would give you a nice broad, connected expanse of something across that wall.

I'd put a small decorative pillow on the bed. Maybe black or a deep burgundy.

Any chance you could ground the bed on a beautiful rug? If not, maybe just one to step out of bed onto.

Hard to see the overall room, but can you paint the door a white? If too choppy, then maybe the gold.

If you sew, I'm wondering about some borders or trim details on the drapes.

I love your room; it's lovely now and has tons of potential.

I'd double up the drapes if you can find them at all . The single panels look a bit skimpy. Extend the rods to make them wider and add another panel to each window. I agree with Squirrelheaven; line them, edge them, add sheers.

A dark burgundy or red rug under the bed and a matching pillow(s) on the bed will give the room the jolt of color it's needing.

I'd add a heaveir/darker nightstand, too. Something along the same lines as the beautiful dresser and bed.

Try the plates over the windows, or perhaps on either side of the wash stand mirror.

Again, I love your furniture and the room. Keep posting photos.

Looking at the photos again...

I don't think the plates will work above the windows. There's not enough room for them to have any breathing space.

You could trace the plates onto paper and roughly color in the pattern. Use double sided tape and "hang" the paper plate templates around the room until you find a spot that feels right for them. I'd try them on either side of the mirror, or both stacked on one side and a vertical photo/picture on the other side to balance them.

Did something special come in the "Little Blue Box?"

Voila! Cheers to dressing up your windows more : ) I put a bit of textured trim along the edges. I didn't raise or widen them as the rods are already done and in place. The landscape pic looks a bit lonely. Adding another small one looks very pretty, imo.

Don't know if the flowers are the right size, but I'd do the pops of red around your bed to draw more attention to it. A colorful decorative pillow or two will also ground and highlight it as your focal point.

I just want to echo the sentiments of Caroline and Squirrel regarding the drapes. Window treatments make or break a room. If your budget can handle it, start over with lined black/white toile, two panels on each window, raise the rod above the window frame, expand the rod, and make sure the drapes go all the way to the floor. I'm neutral on the need for sheers.

The accent color that I would go for in that room would be apple green. Nothing wrong with the red, but the right shade of green would, IMO, have a fresher look.

I'm with the others who have already pointed out that the window treatments need more wieght and volume. Sheers, liners, additional panels - lots of options.
I also think your artwork is a bit too delicate. The feeling is right, just larger pieces? Closer together? Perhaps more of them?

The plates - I'm not loving. The checkerboard just isn't working for me, but I'm sure you can find something else that will work perfectly. Something a little bolder than a delicate B&W transferware, but not quite so funky as the checkerboard.

An accent color is easy 'punch' - but might work against the lovely calmness you've got now. I'd keep any accent colors minimal -- maybe just a bunch of fresh flowers in a silver or crystal vase.

I'm going to be the dissenting opinion on the drapes--I do think you need a pair for each window, and they probably do need the liners, but I don't think hanging them higher would be right. That sort of look is good with windows with more substantial trim, such as that found in older homes (I'm thinking fancy Victorian woodwork with some heft and presence), but in newer construction with very slender trim it either looks to me like one just didn't want to hem the drapes to the right length for the windows, or it looks like you're wishing you had much bigger windows. But I suppose in the end it's personal preference, so who knows.

I lOve toile, but I would like to see it on the windows in a pouffy fabric shade. Or your panels boldly trimmed in black, with fat ball fringe trim. You may have to just start over with them, unless you can find two more.

I would really like to see a warmer color on the walls, in the same shade just darkened a little? It feels a little flat tonally. In any case, that would be a lovely accent color, if you used an even deeper shade on the bed pillows or in a crushed velvet upholstery on the chair. Or maybe a rich aqua blue. I'm just not feeling the red, or the green apple color. Too jarring.

I agree that the side table is a little flimsy compared to the other pieces, a campaign table with a little heft would be a classic choice.

The oil lamp is too small, a taller candlestick or slim urn would look nice, with an ivy topiary. I do like the dresser bits, but I would put at least three pears in the glass bowl, put the Tiffany box away, and change the roses to tulips. I would maybe try the plates on either side of the picture over the bed. I do think a little more art, maybe a soft watercolor or two would be nice in this space.

I just had another idea, what if you repeated the black and white gingham/toile on the windows in a slightly larger size, in say a plaid? Then the plate pattern would fit better in scale. It would add some energy to the very restful, elegant scheme.

I think you're off to a good start. I think "WOW" should be at different eye levels in a room for maximum benefit.

I would add sheer panels to the windows and also add black gathered valances in front of the toile panes that would span the full width of each window. Don't skimp on fabric; make them full and lush.

I'd hang the plates between the windows, with the 3" space between the 2 of them at your eye level. I know, that would place one of them lower than standard height, but sometimes I think that's okay.

The picture that's there now, I'd hang over the lamp so that the top of the frame hits about 4" above the bottom of the larger art piece.

Rethink the red accent color. I think an a fresh apple green would be nice.

Change the roses...maybe some white daisies in a taller vase and move them to the left side of the dresser. Leave the body form slightly in front and to the side of the vase edging toward the center.

Instead of the apple, place a thick candle in the center of the bowl and surround it with green and cream potpourri or add some small decorative green glass stones. Move this to the right side.

Remove the Tiffany box. Stack 3 books on their sides and spin them a little bit so they don't looked formally stacked and if you have a pretty cup & saucer, place them on the books. Set the books slight in front of the bowl and somewhat closer to the center.

If there is wall space I'd look for a narrow floor corner shelving unit and display some quaint collectibles and personal black & white photos in black frames. If not, then maybe a narrow lingerie chest on the flat wall would be nice. I'd paint the chest in apple green.

See if you can find a green "throw" to place at the foot of the bed.

Paint the night stand black. A taller lamp with a black shade would contrast better against your wall color.

I think an area rug by the side of the bed in a dark pattern would give impact to the ground level.

Yes I thought the panels would look better line I have been putting it off until the next time I get to go to a fabric store. I was thinking if I couldnÂt match this pattern I would have to start all over again.

I think a glass topped table would be a better choice. The room looks small and too many wood pieces would make it seem heavy, not bright and light which is where I think you were going.

kyshine3 - you didn't answer annie1971 questions and I think she made good points.

I think the black and white toile doesn't go with the wooden bed, I would get a black headboard and even a bigger bed, but that goes back to what annie was saying, what is the purpose of this room going to be?

Yes I think the little table would be better painted black the room is really small.

The room is just an extra bedroom I hadnÂt been able to do a lot of decorating to our house and I want to start.
The bed has to stay I promised it to dd and have I no place to storage it.

I have been reading the board for a very long time and by doing so I knew I would like the suggestions that the regulars and newbies would give me because of their style. I guess I was thinking they would decorate as if the room belongs to them.

Nice room! I love the bed and dresser. Did you make the drapes with fabric you were given? I think it looks like a Waverly toile. I would bet you could find more to make a panel for each side. I would also add a sheer panel in between the toile and I like squirrel's black trim on the sides. You may have just painted the walls(?)...but I think a light to medium blue color would be nice for the walls and allow the furniture and the toile to show up more. I think the table painted black would be nice and an area rug as suggested before. Sorry, I don't like the plates at all for this room.

Long as we're shopping now ;) Country Curtains has some pretty curtains, as well as this great little bed rug and table. I did add some trim or fringe to the valance. I do love the table you have there and would try that on the other side of the bed with a more substantial nightstand on the curtain side. Didn't go lamp shopping, but maybe you have another great vintage lamp around, keeping with the old & new of the room. Some small round frames had jumped out at me too. Something like this looks really nice though, I think. Maybe some black and white silhouettes, or pressed botanicals.

btw, creating tall, narrow windows with your room is very charming with your things : )

I didnÂt get to the city this weekend however check coupled of local antiques/junk stores for the oval picture no luck I really like them beside the picture. I thought the picture behind the bed wasnÂt wide enough for the wall thinking something needed to be added. By seeing what you did I agree it looks much better
Yes I thought about a chandelier, and one day hope to find one.
What about one of the black table found I found at Target I believe they are smaller and because of the room size they might be better table 1, table 2 or table 3?

Table 3, and just a simple little chandelier...I watch too much Devine Design and Candace likes to add them to rooms. They always look great once they are hung. Usually they look cheap when Chico holds them up (a lot tend to have those plastic beads strung onto the bases) but for some reason when they are up they have that vintage look that will go with your room.
