Last Cast Party Of The Year

Hi everyone,

The last cast party of the year is Saturday night. It is our holiday show, the classic "A Christmas Carol". It did so well, they added two extra performances, which are tomorrow night and Saturday night. They had a cast party for the children this past Sunday. As always, I will be taking a dessert and a beverage for the cast party. I have chosen to make blackberry cobbler and my gram's lemonade. Both of which have been huge hits. I think this will be one of the larger cast parties we'll have. All have been fun and I look forward to many, many more. I'm very happy to be part of this group and maybe I'll make a debut performance on the stage. All I can do is remain hopeful. :-)

Brad, I can at least vouch for your Gram's lemonade, it's delicious. They ought to give you a part just for making that!

Have a good time and enjoy the party. I'm sure you'll get on stage soon, and I want to know when you do.

Annie, so glad you enjoy the lemonade. Bought the lemons earlier this week, and I was afraid they would spoil before I made it on Saturday (or maybe I'll make it tomorrow, I haven't decided). LOL, maybe they should give me a part based on my cooking. I have been asked to consider doing a role, but my transportaion is limited, sadly. I shall let you all know when I do get a part.

The cobbler I made before and it was very well recieved. When I made it before, there were only four pieces left to bring home. It's so easy to make and serves 16 people. I'll share the recipe again :-).

Express Fruit Cobbler

2 20 oz. cans fruit pie filling (the ones I use are 21 oz.)
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, softened
1 18 oz. box white cake mix (I can only find 15 oz. boxes now)
1 egg.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spread pie filling in 9 x 13 inch baking pan. In large bowl, cream butter to smooth texture. Add dry cake mix & egg and blend well. Mixture will be very stiff. Spoon mixture over pie filling. Bake for 40 minutes or until golden brown. Cut into squares. Serve with vanilla ice cream or Cool Whip. Serves 16.

I'll leave my cobbler whole like I did before, that way people can get as large or small piece they want. I also take a container of Cool Whip if they wish.

Thank you, Rusty! The first kind of pie filling I thought of using for this recipe was strawberry. I don't really care for pineapple, and people usually like angel food cake with strawberries on it, so I made a connection. I agree about using any kind of fruit pie filling in this recipe. I thought about using blueberry pie filling sometime, too. However, Wal-Mart was all sold out of it when I was there yesterday. I wonder how peach pie filling would go with this recipe? I'm always happy to hear that my gram's lemonade is so popular with friends. I have it memorized now, so I can tell people or write it for them on the spot if they want the recipe. Brad AKA Moonwolf

I frequently make a dill dip, and I add a bit of lemon juice and garlic to it. I bought a small bunch of dill (for $1.00) at the Hollywood Farmers' Market last Sunday, but I used most of it to make a large batch of tartar sauce, which is similar to your dill dip, but it has pickles in it. It is definitely a good idea to use fresh dill (if possible) instead of dried, as it will have more flavor. I planted some dill seeds last week, and they are just now beginning to come up. Have you tried growing dill yourself? I have a lot of parsley in my yard right now - that is also easy to grow. If you add garlic and lemon to your dip, you can use regular salt instead of seasoned salt. I mash the garlic in a mortar & pestle with a bit of Kosher salt to make a paste, and I substitute this for seasoned salt. If you use dried onions instead of fresh (I use chives because I also have those in my yard), you will probably need to thin the dip a bit, but lemon juice will work for that. You might want to add some freshly ground black pepper also. Using cream cheese instead of mayo will also make the dip too thick, but you can use it if you thin it with milk or lemon juice.

It sounds like fun, Brad. I learned to knit a long time ago, and found that I did not have the patience for it, I tended to toss it into a corner and when I picked it back up I'd have dropped stitches or simply forgotten what I was doing. I knitted a sweater for my mother, then gave it up... Good luck on that play, and a potluck sounds good to me. The play was in the early 1900s, in New Hampshire, so you could do food from that time period or geographical area. Or you could just make dessert, that always seems popular! I'm sorry about your Gram, just spend as much time as you can with her, and be sure to get her favorite recipes so they are not lost. Annie

Bumblebeez, thank you! The party's not until tomorrow, lol, but I'll report back on how everyone liked it and the lemonade! I did something different with it this time and left the lemon slices out.

This cobbler smells heavenly when it's baking :-).

The play, party, and the cobbler were huge hits! The party was for only adults, and there were quite a few types of alcohol there and I even had a couple cups of the mixed drink in the punch bowl (raspberry liquor, vodka, orange juice concentrate, fruit punch concentrate, sort of like a sangria drink I guess). Tasty vittles and people were suprised at how easy the cobbler is to make :-). We'll be doing a clean up on Thursday, and leaving the set up until the January work days.
