Water hammer after plumber came
Comments (4)sfter opening valveall the way...if it still persits close the valve if it helps, leave it there having the valve wont hurt a thing. water hammer is caused by kinetic energy when the valve opens and closes, causing the pipe to jump.by closing the valve you stop some of the energy..as long as your toilet fills in a timely manner its ok..if you want to stop the hammer.install a mechanical arrester on the water heater or a 18" air chamber just install a 18"to 24" -1" pipe with a cap on it on the hot and cold side of the water heater...See Morewater util./pipe hammering?
Comments (2)Water hammering comes from water flowing rapidly through a pipe and then coming to a sudden stop. Since liquids donÂt compress, the hammering sound are the pipes and such moving and flexing from the impact of the water coming to a sudden stop. It is often seen as a result of an electric valve that closes (such as on a dishwasher, or washing machine). Pipes that are not well secured can make additional noise if they slap against the wall or framing member when they move. To answer your question, yes, this can be damaging to your plumbing. It can damage the valve itself and it can stress all of the pipes and joints up to that valve that is closing. Not to be alarmist, but it in severe cases, it can cause the pipes to fail. In less severe cases the constant moving of the pipe can cause a failure. If there is air in the line from the work on the water main that can cause the hammering that you heard. What the water company said sounds reasonable to me. What your builder did to limit the hammering also seems reasonable. However, if the hammering persists, I would have the builder or a plumber check the water pressure to see if it is too high and also take additional steps to relieve the hammering....See Morewater hammer noise from downstairs apartment's HE washer
Comments (2)You might be able to install arresters on your line if you share the same water lines with that neighbor and it will help some. Basically the pressure travels through the pipe till it finds a place to go, and if it travels up towards you it could be why you hear the loud noise. I had a toilet that when the fill valve stopped I would get a knock that sounded like it was coming from the main shutoff valve mutiple rooms away. I installed a water hammer arrester there and have not heard the noise since. I do know you are 'supposed' to install these close to the problem fixture, but I didnt have access to the line inside the wall by that toilet so I just installed it where it was knocking and it worked. I would try to locate where the noise is coming from and install them there on your lines...See MoreWhen would you know you had a water hammer problem?
Comments (6)Hi Katrina, I have a set of LGs on the second floor in my town house and am very pleased with them. You will know immediately whether you have a water hammer issue or not with them. My place has plastic water piping and there is no water hammer issue. I had another LG set at my prior house with copper pipes and once we installed arrestors, we had no problem either. The current set is doing very well in terms of vibrations, too. Just make sure the washing machine is perfectly level and the washers on the feet are tightened after the adjustments are made. I can definitely recommend the LGs. I have had this set for almost 3 years now with no issues at all. My prior set of LGs ended up with my ex and as far as I know they are still going strong after 5 years (with no repairs at all). I bought both sets from Best Buy....See Morelazypup
