I've only heard bits and pieces about this, but I'm wondering, how did she/he get pregnant? I'm probably the only one here who doesn't know the answer to this question. LOL

I hadn't heard anything about this story before, but I think it is awfully sad; both for the unborn child and the friends and families of the "parents". A gender change is such a huge undertaking that "she" should have thought through the child issue before beginning the change. If "she" wanted a child, she should have gone thru adoption or surrogacy. Just MHO.

Personally, I think if she wants to be a man, she should have gone all the way and had the appropriate internal organs removed along with the breasts. As it is now, HE is still a SHE, but just looks like a man. I think it's disqusting that this person would even get pregnant trying to be a man. If IT wanted a baby that bad, it should have happened before the change.

And, to capitize on this is obsurd.

Lots of transgendered folks don't end up going all the way with surgery. I also don't care that a person that looks like a man is trying to have a baby. Plenty of manly looking women have babies. Why should a person not have a child because of what you, me, or anyone else thinks about the way they look, or the decisions they have made about their life, sexuality, or whatever else. It's their life and body and they can do what they want. "Disgusting" is in the eye of the beholder.

The only thing I have a problem with is that they are all over the media about it. I agree with Wildchild, big whoop! This person has female parts still, so it's not a miracle, or some strange scientific anomoly. It's just a woman in the middle of gender reassignment surgery who is pregnant. I don't see what all the hub-bubs about.

I agree with all of the above comments, how ridiculous is this, and how horrible for that poor child - what a life it will have.

Sounds like a headline for the Enquirer to me. If they weren't seeking 'headlines' how did this all come about? Poor baby.

Good Grief!!!!!!! I don't watch Oprah anyway, but I am glad I am forewarned to keep away today.

"How did she get pregnant?" Artificial insemination is what they said on the program I watched.They thought about having a surrogate to bear their child but thought,"Why do that when we can do it ourselves!"
I agree with everyone else,just a woman trying to be a man,having a baby.Nothing earthshaking about it! No different than if the "wife" had been artificially inseminated using her own egg and had "their" baby.
I wondered about the hormone thing too,what affect it would have on this baby girl.

When i first saw this a week or so ago ,i thought,another one looking for his/her 15 minutes of fame.What's the big deal,she was a woman,and started going thru the transgender thing,just didn't finish the job.So how is it a miracle?? I think it's all about the money and the 15 minutes.I feel sorry for the baby!!!

The guy said on the show today that he didn"t have his female parts taken out because he might want a baby some day.. Someday is here!!!!!!!!!! It is plan and simple that it is not a man having a baby.... He was and still is a "SHE"..........

I agree, this person is legally a man but is really still a woman.

I have to agree with Azzalea, it's very hard to believe that he supposedly stopped taking male hormones two years ago (as he told Oprah) when he still sports a full beard. And if he actually did stop taking them, just the fact that he still has enough male hormones in his body to maintain that beard would make me really worried about how screwy the hormonal balance of the child will be at birth and particularly upon puberty.

I know I might get blasted for saying this, but it just seems a very selfish choice, driven by a money making opportunutity to sell a book. People would have only thought Thomas was gaining a lot of weight, and never suspected the real reason, so there was no actual need to broadcast it. They could have still had a child half their's genetically, but quietly gone out of country to have the baby. Then the child would not grow up being hounded by the media. But I think the shock factor of appearing like a pregnant male was too hard for them not to cash in on.

I don't usually watch Oprah, but I did today out of pure curiosity. I wanted to know as much as possible about this so I could make an informed opinion about it.

I understand now how this literally happened. A 'miracle" it isn't. They went to a Vet for the instrument to use! I have a feeling that this was planned from day1, and that is why the female parts were left in. Just wanted to be first at something! A neighbor said a book had been started before the pregnancy.

Now that they have made a path, I expect there will be others to follow their lead. Just what the world needs!

Actually, while I was watching the show, I felt a little nauseas. It is just too not normal, IMO.

I don't think it is right for people to "mess" with nature. We do it when drugs go on the market that have not been fully tested, when we add growth harmones to meat, and when we allow people to try to change their sex just like it was a tummy tuck or something.

I say, let the schools stay out of the heads of students and stop inviting these people to come in and try to normalize such malfunctionings.

I'd heard about this story before and was totally creeped out, but after watching Oprah yesterday I felt a little differently. The "husband" seemed like a genuinely nice person and honestly I kept forgetting he was actually a she. Now the wife on the other hand totally creeped me out! She is much older looking, has two grown daughters, and to me, there was something just off-putting about her. She kept stroking his tummy and came across as pushy and underhanded to me. Of course, that's just my opinion. If there's any gimick to this, I believe she's behind it.

I am grossed out by the whole thing. If they wanted a child then the wife should have had one. It's ok that She became a He. But i say pick a gender and stick to it! Who even knows how he got pregnant. Maybe the wife is really a man. This child is in for a rough life. And I think this couple are 2 extremely selfish people.

It's just not right...the kid/kids they are having will be so messed up in the head. And the ridicule they will go through will be horrific for them. Kids have enough problems growing up, why add more?? I see trouble ahead.....

I think if she really wanted to be a man, she should have choose for the "wife" to have the baby. I think it's a publicity stunt to sell their book, get on tv, etc. And it seems to be working.

The wife had surgery and can not have another baby and I think this is the most selfish thing anyone could come up with just to make money. The "wife" seems very uncomfortable talking about it all and the woman/man enjoys the attention. I do not think I want to hear anything else about their story..

I can't believe the media circus. All the headlines with "pregnant man". "He" is not a man. He may have had a gender change & may legally be a man, but he has female reproductive organs. They're acting as if it's some miracle & it's not. He/she has the correct parts to accomplish this.

Strangely enough, I never see Oprah, but somehow I caught it yesterday.

Normally, I'm a "live and let live" type of person. I really don't care what other people do or how they live their life, but this case just seems so weird to me. I can't help but feel for the eventual child that is born from this.

Here's what I learned: Thomas's wife can't have more children due to some previous medical problems. Thomas purposely "kept" his reproductive parts because he wanted kids one day. He took testosterone for 2 years or so, enough to "grow" a penis and testicles, plus surgery. But then has stopped in order to get pregnant? but yes, he still has a beard. Thomas got pregnant last year, but they lost the baby (it may have been multiples, so babies)

As for going public, I think they sort of had to do it? As a 9 month pregnant lady, there is no way I could have hidden this (I'm huge!). Thomas does work and was trying to find clothes to hide his stomach (without much luck), plus I figure eventually the community would find out and it's their way to explain it to everyone before all the gossip spread. That being said, I have no doubt a book will follow.

Just weird. I saw the photos, this "man" didn't complete his gender reassignment surgery, he kept his uterus. This is his second pregnancy, the first baby died before it could be born.

What a scam! It's a person born a woman with a woman's "parts" who decides to change to a man then says "he" is pregnant. Why don't they state that up front. He/she's NOT a pregnant man.

Maybee, the mother-to-be IS the donor!! They went to a Vet, got an "instrument" and took care of all the little details themselves. How romantic!

I honestly do not believe that anyone could "grow a penis" or testicles just from taking testosterone injections/pills/whatever for two years.

While it is true that many transgendered people do not have the surgery to reverse the sex organs, the reason for the vast majority of them is the cost of the surgery. For those who are truly transgendered, there wouldn't be a moment's hesitation if cost were no object.

And, truly transgendered people do not "feel comfortable enough" being the gender they were born -- truly transgendered people fully believe and feel that they are the opposite sex - born a woman but really a man; or born a man but really a woman. They NEVER feel comfortable as the "wrong" sex.

I read an interview of this "guy." He didn't say anything about having felt since childhood that he was born into the wrong sex - that he always felt like a boy. No, what he said was that he "decided to become a man," and started taking testosterone and had his breasts surgically removed. He also said that he didn't want to have a hysterectomy because he knew that he wanted to have a child someday. Those are NOT the comments that a true transgender would make.

When I worked in a law office, one of our clients was transgender. When I worked in an office with five OB/GYNs we had a patient who was transgender. And a few years ago one of my coworkers was transgender. From having spent many hours talking with each of them, I know they each must be horrified at what this person is doing and the publicity surrounding it.

Okay...you have to have an egg "he" would have the egg, but where does the sperm come from to fertilize the egg. Just taking testosterone wouldn't allow he/she to produce sperm, would it? I'm not getting it here.

They bought the sperm from a sperm bank.

The sperm was donated, and they injected it into the 'dad' who's still woman enough to carry a baby, by something they got from a vet.

"It" also said that when they were coming out with the pregnancy they contacted many organization like gay/lesbian and transgender. Most would not even return his call. I think they do not even feel good about this situation.

If I heard it right on the Oprah show, this is not the first pregnancy for Thomas. The first was donated sperm, it failed,

Could we quit calling her a "he". You are born with a set of chromosomes that God gave you. You are either born female...or male. This poor misguided female...who thought she wanted to be male, can NOT be a male. Her chromosomes will not allow it. Yes visually she can look like a man....but she cannot "become" a man. She is a woman having a baby....no big deal...except for the fact that she and her girlfriend have employed the media to make it public.

Living where I do I've met many transgenders also. Lindsey is right on the mark. Haven't spoken to any recently but I can be pretty sure they are appalled at this freak show.

I feel so bad for the child. At best it's a science experiment and at worst the hormones may leave it with many ireversable health issues.

OJ, I'm sorry for the loss of your cousin. I hope you were able to meet up with the others from that area while you were there, as you'd hoped. I'm not following what you mean in your last post ("How can we let this (cold) story do the same??"). Do you mean how can we let this story die? If so, I guess I think it should ... the "15 minutes of fame" has about run out. I don't think they should get the publicity that they're seeking, because it's not the miracle that they, and some of the media, are claiming. It's a woman having a baby (ok, that in itself is a miracle of nature, but you know what I mean :-)

I know a transgendered person. Was male, became female. And to me she is a she and there's no question about it. She went all the way, had the surgeries, is a woman. I applaud her for the courage it took to do so. Can you imagine the social prejudices she had to endure throughout the course of the change, and even still? She must have been very, very sure of what she wanted if she went through all that. And now she's happy. How wonderful!

But in this case, Thomas didn't do that. Physically he's still a woman doing what most women do - having a baby.

(OJ, regarding your PS, I don't know if you're joking or if it's a real question, but "letter carrier" is the accepted term whether male or female).
