Questions about New Sewer Hookup, 4' pipe capaciy

We're looking to abandon our septic system and connect to the public sewer. The easiest way, short of tunneling through rock or using a pump, is to tap into a 4" line that's already shared by two neighbors. This shared 4" line goes into a main owned by the township.

A few questions:

1. How many houses can safely share a 4" drain line? Are there capacity issues if 1 or 2 additional residences tapped in? (assume each house has 4 bathrooms which is an overestimate)

2. If I have a permit and the neighbors agree in writing, is this enough to proceed or should I look to get a permanent easement? The excavation on the neighbor's side is about 5 feet through wild brush and some grass.

3. How are maintenance issues/costs usually handled for shared sewer line maintenance?

We'd obviously prefer a direct tie-in to avoid these problems altogether, but this is the most practical path that both the town and contractor recommend.
