Pictures or shelving on your bathroom walls?

Trying to put the finishing touches to our bath. What did you hang on your walls? I feel if I don't hang something the walls will look I boring.

I didn't want to worry about art being ruined by dampness, so I found some raku pieces that I liked....and hung over the tub area.

This old thread got revisited. @dani_m08 to answer the question about extra probe, I believe I ordered an extra one when I bought the set up. The probe wire is just setting in the junction box I think but honestly I cant remember. When I laid out the underfloor heating and the probe, I just ran another probe near the first probe, and it was then sealed into the floor self leveling compound as per instructions. then the end was just threaded into the wall like the one that would be live, and not connected, but just laying there in the box. Regarding the tile layout. I just decided to run it this way, after getting instructions on the 90Degree way, IIRC. The herringbone that I love is from my childhood and the side walks in my neighborhood that all ran at 45Degree. so that to me is herringbone. I know you posted on @sochi thread about her amazing bathroom and a wall mounted faucet. I would totally do it if I had the right sink for it. In my case I had made my sink out of soapstone and an integrated backsplash. The pictures of this bathroom reveal are no longer available because of the use of photo bucket, when it was Gardenweb. I did not keep my account with photo bucket. I'll add some of the reveal pictures so you can see the sink and floor. Regarding the sink there is no ledge for water to drip from my hands when using the faucet. The water drips right into the sink. In my other bathroom with a deck mounted faucet I am always wiping up drips and it is a nuisance. I much prefer the setup for this sink. Below: I love the flush finish from the faucet to the bottom of the sink. nothing drips on a counter or edge of a sink. Below: looking in from the doorway. Below: Here I am finishing up the sink. the backsplash was epoxied on as a separate piece. The whole soapstone install in the room took next to nothing to buy as they were all small pieces that I epoxied together with a 3 part stone epoxy. Below: this is the counter at the tub, and is in 2 long pieces but I was able to epoxy them together at there edges to make a wide slab for the top. All the soapstone was finished with a 60 grit sandpaper to be rough and this lovely soft tone of blue/green/gray/white. I did not oil it so this color tone would remain light. Below: If I recall correctly @sochi helped me decide on this Hubberton Forge Mirror. I have 3 different metals in this room, but they are all a cool silver to black color. Below: the center of this tower shares space with the kitchen on the other side of the wall. there is also some extra space that houses some electrical wiring. this is an old simple house. this bathroom was an add on when it got move to the farm in the 30s IIRC. The plumbing was all rearrange and some of the details that were orignially there I kept but updated it, such as this tower feature. The old one went and the carpenter did a wonderful job with this one. Below: This feature was another thing I kept from the old bathroom but flipped it from the other end and had the carpenter put drawers in it. Before it was a hell hole. things got lost and the build was soooo old and creapy I didn't like using it for storage. Now it is perfect for storage.

Wow, that is stunning! I love the shine on the tile, it glows like polished marble or stone. Very, very pretty. I noticed you have a magnifying mirror that extends out from the wall. I want one of those but always wonder about how to place it for the best use. Where does the light come from in this room, is it a ceiling fixture? Is it good at helping highlight stray hairs at the browline? Thanks in advance! -EChic

Just one point about installing a pocket door where the spaces between the thin little studs are backed up with a sheet of plywood behind the drywall. You can also skip the drywall entirely and cover directly with plywood right from the get-go. Nobody would have a problem finishing that surface, neither with stain and lacquer, or with a skim coat of mud. Solves any base trim problems too, especially for amateurs with no special equipment like nailers and such. Good plywood, maybe even veneered, but not OSB or MDF.

If you have a curb, you will have the cracks develop there, too. and where the walls meet the floor. Anywhere where two different materials meet or where one surface meets another that is in a different direction (known as "change of plane"). My contractor still grouts such places, too. But I did a solid surface shower that he could not do wrong. I am keeping an eye on the place where the floor meets the shower pan, all other places are in dry areas. So there it is just cosmetic. I would guess that water can get behind your tile with those cracks. If properly waterproofed it is fine, but if not, I would get to this as soon as you can. A lot of shower builders do not use waterproofing, even though it is now required. If you do a search on this forum for "Shower waterproof," you can see many discussions about it and learn what is and is not waterproof. (Redguard yes, Durock no, for instance.)

These shelves in black are waiting to be hung over the tub

Large phoenix needle work (4x3?) to the right outside the tub

Wrought iron shelf for over toilet (getting up the nerve to punch holes in the wall after painting - this is really heavy)

and art work on the concealed medicine cabinet I FINALLY finished

A clock and 2 Pottery Barn Holman shelves above my family room toilet. I don't have a picture because I'm not done yet:-)

I'm worried that the shelves will close the space in too much but my son really wants shelves and he is the one that will be using the bathroom so...

I love all your ideas, but my bathroom is small so I'm not sure if covering all the walls would be a good thing. I was thinking of a small glass shelf over the toilet just for decorative items, with a picture above that.

On the right of the mirror I was going to add another piece of art. Will it be too many pictures??

Here are the 2 walls I am talking about.

and the mirror is in between the 2 walls. The mirror is not installed and opens to the right, but would clear anything on that side of the wall.

Love your tile!

I would wait to decide until everything is in place. I am thinking that once you get a shower curtain added by the tub, and you see the mirror and outlets installed, you won't really have a good spot for a shelf above the toilet.

A single piece of art, or perhaps a pretty wall pocket with some greenery in it, might be all you need, and would soften and add color to the space.

On the wall to the right, I would think a single piece of framed art, or a stack of a couple of smaller pieces, would be fine.

I have a few of my inspiration photos on the bottom of my post, its the style of shelving I am going to use in my bathroom. Also going to go with towel hooks instead of the towel bar or ring. I love the look of shelves in a bathroom.

les19 - thanks! The outlets are already up waiting for above medicince cabinet light to be installed. There is a good amount of space from top of the bullnose to the outlet. Is there an amount of space you should have for shelve?

javachik - I agree love the way the tile turned out, but it feels like an empty wall space above the toilet.

andreadeg - will you please post pics of the Holman shelves over the toilet once you've installed them? I'm remodeling my bathroom right now and the toilet is set into a little alcove - perfect spot to use those shelves.

I need to decide if I want to use 1 or 2 and it would really help to see them in place. I'm also trying to choose between the espresso and the white.

Will do...I'm hoping that they will be up this weekend.

One thing has led to another with this small bathroom update I decided to take on. I wasn't expecting to refinish the floor, or replace the toilet but both needed to be done. The final coat on the floor is drying now! :-)

Powder room: The shelf brackets show a lot on the first photo, but IRL they aren't noticeable. I took this photo from the wrong angle. We enjoy collecting shells, so we've used the powder room to give us a place to enjoy them, along with a shell-shaped basin.

Guest bath: We have rainforest green marble on the counter, so have four photos of rainforest scenes on the wall.

Master bath: Four Degas nudes at their bath hung vertically between the bathtub and the shower. I don't have photos of those though.
