KAF gift certificate! What you buy?

I got an early Christmas present. A King Arthur Flour Gift certificate! A great present. The only problem is, I want at least one of everything! LOL! I'm a big cookie and bread baker. What would you get?

Fiori di Sicilia, the citrus oil sampler and a bunch of other extracts & flavorings--the 'Buttery Sweet Dough' sounds interesting....

OK, I went with Maryott's. It was definitely the best website for newbies AND I could order gift certificates in ANY amount that I wanted. Marilyn was such a sweetie on the phone too. Of the others, Oakes website was the next easiest to navigate but they limit gift certificates to $25, $50, $100 Marietta's website was difficult to get started on and easy to get lost in the wrong place. Their front page is poorly designed and newbies, who won't know what "2007 introductions" means, could be scared off by the first page of $100+ plants they stumble into. Gilberthwild.com must be on vacation this time of year and so is their website. I could not even see what DL they sell. Their page does say to check back after Dec 15 for next year's catalog. gonegardening, I want to see if they will get hooked by browsing through the eyecandy on a good website first. If they rave about how beautiful DL are after this first exposure then next year the AHS membership could be a perfect gift. thank you all for your suggestions. I hope this results in 3 new DL addicts :)

I fully agree with you that the GC should be saved for a private occasion.. It would be tacky to use it while the other couple pays with cash or credit. Logic says it shouldn't make any diffference, but I can tell you that, in reality, it would make a very negative impression. Possibly, if the other couple are VERY close friends, it might be OK, but I wouldn't even think of doing it if they're not.

Giftcards have their usefullness. I've heard of inactivity fees, but never experienced it first hand. I give a few giftcards a year. I give them for consumables (coffee shop, restaurant), because I obviously cannot give the teacher 4 cups of coffee for a gift. But I can treat her to 4 cups of coffee at her convenience with a giftcard, if I know she drinks coffee. If not, another place. And you can add my name to Jodi's wishlist. Give me a Barnes & Noble (any bookstore, that's just closest to my house) gift card, and I'll be a very happy girl! When someone gives me one of those, I know they know what I want. Forget the diamonds, books are this girl's best friend- but it's hard to buy a book for someone else, it's best to let them pick it. And I have a B&N discount card, so I will get more than face value of the card, by up to 40%.

Oh, and Vietnamese cinnamon. I've been on a new bakeware kick recently and have bought five of their pans. I love them.

Soonergrandmom--Just to let you know, I've been very pleased with the Saigon Cinnamon that I ordered from Atlantic Spice Company. (Costs only $4.35 a pound & I can't taste the difference between it and Penzey's Vietnamese cinnamon.) No affiliation w/ the company--just a happy customer.

The Fiori di Sicilia and the citrus oil sampler are definitely near the top of the list! I also have cinnamon from Penzey's. Right now I have China Cinnamon but have used the Vietnamese Cinnamon in the past. I also thought about getting the ceramic ring / wreath pan I think it's be fun for breads. I love there ceramic covered bread pans too. I'm hoping Santa gives me another gift certificate for that!

boo, I'd also want one of everything. i'd definitely go with the fiori di Sicilia because I've never used it and can't find anything similar. then I'd go directly to the bakeware section, unless I got all hung up in the chocolate department. (grin)

I bought the fiori di sicilia, the princess flavor, and the buttery sweet dough. Only the fiori was worth it, imo. The other two taste artificial to me.

I would recommend the fiori di sicilia and the vanilla bean paste. It has flecks of vanilla and it's really nice.

Another fiori di Sicilia fan. Add it to your sweet dough recipe (1/4 to 1-2 teaspoon) and make cinnamon rolls with it. Instead of topping the dough with cinnamon/sugar, use a very thin coat of orange marmalade.

To go along with fiori di Sicilia, I'd also recommend the European Candied Orange Peel. When I make a recipe from the Kansas Wheat Commission - 100% Whole Wheat Sugar Cookies - I add 1/4-1/2 t. fiori di Sicilia plus finely chopped European Candied Orange Peel. Both are "secret" ingredients others can't duplicate.

I'd also suggest the Pain de Mie (Pullman) Pan with Lid. Make your own square loaves of sandwich bread.

The dough whisk for breadmaking!!!! It is actually one of their best selling products. I love mine! (Thank you bread camp campers!) Stirs up a 4 loaf recipe in no time! Get the 15" one.
