Need help selecting water softener
Comments (2)If you are going to filter tap water for drinking and cooking, I suggest running two cold water lines to the kitchen, one softened, one not. The unsoftened water would run only to your filter. Then you branch off from the filter to the drinking water tap and to the icemaker. The softened cold water line runs to the kitchen sink so you won't end up with buildup around your faucet. Just another alternative to what you have planned. Your planned 1 cubic ft softener will be just right. Whether you go with the 5600sxt or 7000 sxt will depend upon your pipe size. If your plumbing will be 3/4" go with the 5600. Larger piping calls for the 7000. Price difference will likely be $30-$50. I recommend having your plumber install a three-valve bypass in case you have to remove the softener entirely. I've included a diagram below. The diagram shows gate valves, but I prefer quarter-turn ball valves instead....See MoreWater Softener Selection Help
Comments (36)Make sure your dealer is giving you a top basket for the 7000SXT and 10% cross-linked resin rather than the 8% stuff. Also, have him install a three ball valve bypass even though the Fleck comes with it's bypass which you will also use. That way, if the Fleck bypass requires service or leaks you can still have water to the house while waiting for repair or parts. Should be a minimal charge at time of installation. You also want the Fleck 2310 safety float in your brine tank. You must be misunderstanding what he is telling you... The brine tank is part of the softener and it's only line connects to the control valve on the softener. There should be an overflow fitting on the brine tank that should connect to a drain if the safety float fails BUT it is a gravity line and can not go UP. If he is speaking about the Softener drain line then it can go up and he can connect it to the sink drain IF he uses an air gap. If the softener starts running to drain under the house you will know it when your next water bill comes for sure. Sounds like an unusual installation can you give more details?...See MoreHelp with water Softener Selection

Comments (5)Water softener 101 ... Since you're on a water system the water utility can supply you with the specs of the water AS IT LEAVES their facility but that is not necessarily representative of the water conditions at your water meter. Hit the Yellow Pages and call at least three local water treatment pros. Make sure you call at least one of the big dogs like Kinetico or Culligan for comparison and at least a couple independent pros. Give each an opportunity to offer suggestions and provide you with a quote to meet your water treatment needs. IGNORE ANY THAT DON'T TEST YOUR WATER THEMSELVES as they can't speak intelligently to water treatment without knowing what needs to be treated. Ask lots of questions. Softening the entire house or just the water heater (IMO a bad idea)? Warranty, parts & labor or just parts, how long and on exactly what? Install, permits required, licensed plumber? Routine maintenance and costs? Do they stock parts? Response time for emergency (water leak) calls? If they don't explain things to your satisfaction that is a good indicator of how you'll be treated after the sale. After they've gone use your water test to compare with theirs. Are all your treatment needs being addressed? Ask your neighbors if they have any water treatment experience. They might tell you who's good or who to avoid. Come back here and post the specific recommendations and hardware components with the costs and we'll give you our opinions....See Moresnowang
