Thumbs Up or Thumbs Down- a discussion of common techniques
Comments (21)Thumbs up: Removing truly invasive, non-native plants (japanse honeysuckle for instance.) Thumbs up: Using plants that (once established) can get by (most years) on whatever rain falls. Thumbs up: Plants that provide food and shelter for birds--and realizing that snakes and hawks gotta eat too. (One of my neighbors asked me if I'd figured out a way to keep the resident hawk from eating the birds who came to my feeders (I've never seen this happen.) Same neighbor was horrified when she learned that Fred the Black Snake had gotten the second round of cardinal nestlings that were in my Rose bush. Nature at it's finest! Thumbs down: Rubber mulch (except in a playground situation)and synthetic pinestraw. Thumbs down: Neighbors who ask me to design THEIR gardens...just becasue mine "looks so good." I could be flattered, but-- 1) I garden by "feel"--my designs are the product of trial, error, plant obsession, plantwalking, and some great guidance from THIS group. 2) I actually TAKE CARE of my garden. Neighbors in question will not. 3) My garden is built around serious hardscape--it provides the structure for what I plunk in place. The yards in question have little-to-no hardscape. melanie...See MoreThumbs up for Tomato Grower Supply Company
Comments (7)I always grew fabulous tomatoes in NY. Funny, I was just thinking about my vegetable garden. Always composted everything, never used chemicals of any type. Manure from local stables and I had great soil. Black gold! Reading all the tomato forums about the problems people have and noticing all the 'cures' in garden catalogs makes me wonder why I never ran into those problems. Only the rabbits and sometime bugs would give me a headache. Florida is another story. You have to start your tomatoes in Winter because the heat prevents flowering. The sandy soil has root nematodes so you can only grow in raised beds or containers. Tried an Earthbox last year but heat and bugs took care of the plants quickly. Never got one tomato. How I miss homegrown tomatoes. There is nothing better. You brought back great memories. Jane...See MoreHow do you keep your skirts down??

Comments (16)So glad to help! We also had to order it sight unseen, but I really liked the "minimal" l styling of this one, and I wanted to take advantage of a what appeared to be a really good sale (30% off I think it was???). We thought the bedframe was going to be black but apparently it wasn't! The color name was misleading, and of course, this style was not available in the store. When it was delivered (within days of my parents arrival for a week-long visit, no less), we decided we liked it well enough, and felt it went really well with the floor tile, the C&B dresser we had ordered (which arrived a few days later), etc., so kept it. The quality seems good. It's a bit "oversized' for the mattress and bedframe (a little bit of tucking under, and using small clips; I clipped the bedskirt to the underside of the frame, helps keep it looking neat--probably hadn't done that yet when I took those pics!). I haven't washed it yet, but do take a lint roller or vacuum to it if the cats have been hanging out on it. I keep the mattress pads on the mattresses. Mostly for storage, but it also helps fill out the cover a bit more. The mattresses are not very plump and cushion-y (the one on the pop-up trundle would never fit under the daybed itself if it was any thicker anyway). When my parents come over, we pull out the pop-up trundle (and pop it up), remove the pillows, bolsters, and daybed cover, and then make up the beds with sheets and comforters and regular bed pillows. During my parents' visit(s), the throw pillows and daybed cover then go in the closet on the shelves where the comforters and sheets are normally kept. The only thing that remains on the daybed, with or without the cover on, is the bedskirt (and the mattress pads; I wash those and replace them after my parents' visit, and then make the daybed up again with the cover, bolsters, and throw pillows)....See Morethreedgrad
