Granite Quartzite slabs!! final decision, advice please
Comments (14)Hate to sound like a broken record, but my vote is for the first one. If you wanted something that looked like marble, the first one is closer. The pattern seems "softer" if you will. Of course some of the depth and nuances of the stone are lost in digital format. On my monitor, the mother of pearl looks different that what I have seen in person myself. You are going to be looking at that counter day in/day out for a long time, so make sure you that you really like whatever you pick....See MoreOcean Tide Quartzite for the Kitchen Island it is!
Comments (8)HI there - I have not / did not reserve it - I have still too long to go before I store a slab - but we'll be revisiting after the new year. I hope I can find something I like as much as I did this - but I've simply been overwhelmed with other aspects of the build (like my recent painting nightmare) and the roof install that starts tomorrow FINALLY!!!!...See MoreWhich slab - Sea Pearl or Calcatta Quartzite
Comments (21)When I compared Calacatta vs Sea Pearl a few years ago, most SPs did appear green; the Calacatta's gray seemed a more pure gray. If you like the linear quality of SP and like the C's gray (this might be what dan1888 is referring to), find samples of Macaubus White, which is the crosscut version of Calacatta. ETA: If possible, take samples home and view with/under YOUR lighting. From my experience, warehouse lighting was much different from my actual kitchen lighting....See MoreOrienting granite slabs with veins for island and perimeter counters
Comments (16)Thank you, @cpartist. That is just what I needed to be reminded of - to choose one center, focal point and not to have multiple ones competing with each other. I like how you phrase it as "quieter." I am going to make the drive to the fabricator tomorrow and work on balancing pieces so they are in harmony, like you achieved. @Jeff Grenz - Excellent advice and I completely agree. We chose these slabs without pressure and knowing the risks. I went to every slab yard in our area back in November of last year, "just to look" and get a sense of what was out there. (It's a bit like saying you will go to the animal shelter "just to look" - ha! Get ready to fall in love with something.) Currently, if one is not doing a white or grey toned kitchen, the slab selections are less abundant and so I wanted to research what I could expect for options. These slabs found me and spoke to me and while I was deciding whether or not to take the leap (and take on some risk securing them so early), two other couples who came in while I was standing there wanted to buy them! They are definitely unique and nothing else out there was like them. The slab yard is a highly respected one and the sales person was one of the most professional vendors I have come across in the whole build. This luckily wasn't a high pressure sales job, just pressure applied by yours truly to want to get something special that I dearly loved. I did check on the amount needed for the layout of our kitchen before committing. They were gracious enough to hold the slabs for me since November. You are spot on, though, that anyone looking should be ready with all the information they need to make an informed decision and to have their antennae up for anything that feels like high pressure tactics....See More- 12 years ago
