Rectangles for me.
And I start eating where the "cut" meets the top crust of the bread. Always.

Something about a triangle makes me want to take the first bite right out of the middle of the cut.......which leaves mayo or peanut butter & jelly all over my cheeks.

Nope.

Can't eat triangles.

EXCEPT.........Grilled cheese. MUST be triangles so it can be dunked in a mug of tomato soup.
Rectangles don't fit.

Always triangles.....my mother led me to believe that it was "fancier"....some how dressier.
One grandmother always cut my sandwich in rectangles....the non "dressy" grandmother....the one who killed the chickens and skinned the rabbits, not the one who boiled her jewelry, wore a hat with a feather and drank Scotch!! The dressy grandmother taught me that was the way sandwiches were cut in the Hotel in Atlantic city and on the dining car of the Broadway Limited.
So you know it's true!!

If the sandwich isn't so stuffed that it falls apart when bitten, I prefer not to cut it. I think it is probably the more masculine way to eat a sandwich so if I am in "picky" company I will cut it. Probably into a triangle because it is fancier that way. When I am alone I don't cut, and I take the first bite from the bottom corner.

It's always been a triangle cut for me. I think it looks nicer and the insides are more exposed so it does seem fancier. But I don't cut the crusts off. My daughter would eat all around the inside of the bread and just leave the crusts remaining. lol NancyLouise

Always triangles! Usually 4, and I must start with the triangle with the most "upper crust" of the bread, and finiah with the "lower crust". No rationale here, just my illogical brain telling me that is the way of life.

With me, it depends on the sandwich and the bread. My favorite store-bought sourdough is not square, it is decidedly rectangular, so a diagonal cut makes an uneven triangle that looks "wrong" to me. Those, and sandiwiches full of lots of slippery tomatoes, picles, etc., I cut on into rectangles. Sandwishes that hold together easily -- egg salad, childen salad, grill cheese -- I always cut on the diagonal.

NancyLouise, I used to do like your daughter! LOL! Drove my mom nuts because she thought it wasteful. Now the crust is my favorite part.

When I eat sandwiches (and I try not to have to)I cut them into two triangles. Sometimes I take the bread crust off, especially if the bread was not baked that day. Only time I cut into 4 triangles is when it's a club sandwich.

Grilled cheese always in triangles, peanut butter and jelly open face and never cut, most others in rectangles. Except for tuna, chicken, and egg salads. Those we eat on one slice of bread. We put the salad on half the bread and sort of roll it over on itself, so it's really a half sandwich. That's the way we did it when I was growing up, that's the way we did when we were raising kids, and now, lo and behold, that's the way my kids do it in their homes, so at least the fourth generation is doing it that way. Somehow, that makes me happy.

Triangles! My mother always cut sandwiches into rectangles and I really disliked them. Triangles just taste better :-)

Hubby has his signature cut that's not a true, crisp, triangle cut - it's just "off" the corners. To this day, our adult children can look at a cut sandwich and will know, "Dad cut this".

I rarely eat a sandwich, but would cut a grilled cheese on the diagonal and eat the pointy corner as the first bite.

I remember when I was small and stayed for holidays at grandma's house where an aunt also lived, the aunt would make me toast strips for breakfast. She'd cut the buttered toast four times from top to bottom so I'd have 5 narrow strips of toast. Nobody else ever did that so I thought that was really special! Sometimes it would be sprinkled with brown sugar and cinnamon, making it even more special.

Here the most common sandwiches are the 'bocadillos' or small crusty baguettes served whole, often without butter, and with chorizo, Spanish ham, cheese or tortilla stuffed inside. Depending on whether you are eating it standing up (at a street fair) or sitting down in a cafe, it may be cut in half crossways.

I think this is one of those questions like, "tuck & zip vs. zip & tuck", or, "sock-shoe-sock-shoe vs. sock-sock-shoe-shoe." Once I'm asked, I am no longer doing it without thinking, and can't be sure if I've changed habit or not because of the question! :D

I know I cut sandwiches both ways, but cannot for the life of me figure out any rhyme or reason why or when I do one or the other. I also cut them into 4 squares or 4 triangles. But I never cut the crusts off, because I like crust.

I suppose it does have to do somewhat with how much "stuff" I put into them. Loose stuff falls out of points too easily.

I had to think about this a while and after thinking about it I decided that I may need therapy.

Meat sandwiches like bologna or ham get cut into two rectangles unless they are on a bun then they don't get cut at all. Peanut butter and jam also gets cut into two rectangles. I think this is a throw back to my school lunches.

Salad sandwiches like tuna, salmon, egg, etc get cut into two, sometimes four, triangles. Two if it's for me four if it's for comapny.

Grilled cheese is an exception. They are cut into three triangles. One that isn't quite half and then the larger half is cut in two. I think this is for maxing out the mandatory dips into ketchup.

Rye bread sandwiches always cut straight in half regardless of filling.

I love sandwiches, but will only eat them if they're cut into triangles, or else they will not fit into my mouth, big as it is.

I swing both ways on cutting sandwiches but always take the first bite out of a corner. DH cuts grilled cheese & club sandwiches into 4 triangles & calls them 'witch noses'!

My mother always cut my sandwiches in a rectangle, and I hated it because ALL my friends in school had theirs in a triangle. It was humiliating??!!!!!!

I always cut bread on a triangle, it seems to give a nice sharp corner to start eating.

I also cut those "burlesque dancer" triangles, usually four. I don't eat them in any order, I just eat 'em. I like crust, and Dad used to tell me that crust would make my hair curly. I didn't question it then, but now I realize that my sister had naturally curly hair and NEVER ate the crust. Yup, Dad lied.....(grin)

Ashley doesn't eat crust, that was the job of the WeinerDog, now it's Cooper's job. I used to fret at her, but I've given up and now I just cut the crusts off if I make her a sandwich.

Back when I had long hair, someone asked me if I slept with it under the covers or flipped out?...I couldn't sleep that night!
Then there are people who put on a coat and leave their hair inside....EWW!! Drives me crazy!
Do you cut a hamburger in half? I often eat lunch with someone who does....strange to me!

No, Linda, we don't cut hamburgers in half, though a restaurant here does. But hub always wraps the bottom half of his burgers in a paper napkin so they don't drip! That drives me crazy! All that juice, wasted on a napkin!

shermann, we call that a "fold over" in my neck of the woods and that's usually how I eat my sandwiches at home. Either that or not cut at all. When company comes, well, that's another story. If sandwiches are served I cut in triangles, move both triangles to one side of the plate and have room for chips or potato salad, etc.

Lindac, cutting your burger in half is not strange at all. Back in my "working my way thru school" days, I worked as a waitress. I had a regular customer who came in for lunch every Sunday with her mother. They ate their burgers with a knife & fork. I won't tell you what the mother did in addition to that as I get a little queazy just thinking about it.

Okay...so when y'all eat fried eggs, do you eat the white first and then the yolk? Or poke the yolk to make it bleed all over the white before you eat it?

My brother used to eat all the white, and then lift the whole (runny, as we always cooked them over medium) into his mouth. He liked that first bite, when the yolk exploded all over his mouth.

I absolutely must have the yolk on toast. I cannot bear the thought of putting a whole, unbroken yolk into my mouth.

However, I have never cut a burger in half or eaten one with a knife and fork.

However (again), I now have to wonder about whether or not my friends who have long hair are sleeping with it under or over their covers.

For the record...no matter how cold the night is, or how many comforters/blankets I have burrowed under...my feet must remain free. Toes need air, I guess.
