Help With Toddlers Room!

Hi all,

So, we're building a house and it's being painted as we speak. We need to pick paint for our son's room TONIGHT! Aah..I need more time! Hoping someone can help me!

My son will be 2 next month so I'm wanting the space to be bright and cheery. The rest of the house is pretty neutral - soft greys, taupes, etc. So I'm struggling to commit to something bright and blue.

What we're leaning towards is doing a darker blue on the bottom third and a lighter on the top. And a chair rail to separate it. How do you think this will look?

I've thought of doing an 'underwater theme' as he loves fish and painting waves in place of the chair rail. But at this point, I'm thinking a chair rail might be easier and we can get creative later.

The two blues we're liking are BM R-9969 Mosaic and BM cc-790 Polar Sky.

Any thoughts/suggestions, different colours or pictures would be SOOOO appreciated!!

This may sound strange, but have you considered any grays? When we moved into our house, two rooms on the second floor were painted gray--one a very crisp pale gray, and the other a little more taupe-y gray. I assumed we'd dislike the gray and paint over it...but my (now) 5-yr-old son has the crisp gray room, and our playroom is in the taupe-gray room. Gray seems to really bring out primary-little kid colors. And gray is great because your child won't outgrow it quickly, and you can change the color scheme easily. My ds's room has a blue-red scheme with a little lime green accent, and the playroom has blue and green furniture/storage, with a bright multicolored rug. These are my favorite rooms in the house. Sorry I don't have a specific gray to recommend, since the rooms were already painted when we moved in.

Having said that, I will also say that we have a bathroom that is Polar Sky, and it's a very nice color, very clean and cheerful, with no odd undertones. I think it would be a nice color for a toddler's room.

I like the grass green color of my son's room. He's nine years old, and not really into decorating yet. The color is fresh and looks great with all of the bright colors used in kid's toys and bedspreads. And it seems to have a calming effect, on me at least.

Typed out a long post yesterday and then lost it! Ugh! Anyway, to summarize: 1. Consider getting neutral bedding and adding in your jungle theme with accessories like just the pillows and removable decal. That way, if your son just LOVES something else down the road, you can easily change it with the pillows and other minor accessories. 2. Your son's bed looks a little high-- though I have short kids, so maybe not for him. There are really cute stepstools with a jungle theme-- some are mass produced (check Target and Amazon) but you can also find them on Etsy. 3. Since you are open to removing the TV, I'd say not to put art supplies in there since I find bedrooms not to be the best place for that with young kids. (Depends on your child, though.) You could have baskets of books and open-ended toys. A radio/CD player is always nice, too. Could be a fun dance space! 4. I'd either lower the white shelves if they are for your son-- they do not look to be at a child's eye level, OR keep them up high but use them for breakable items. It's a good idea to literally get down at his level and see how accessible things are, what his view is, etc. Hang things for HIM, not for adults. VERY cute room!

White. There's white in the bedspread and lampshades, and I think it will look bright and crisp against the pink. Regarding art, the princess phase is only a few years for most girls. My daughter was in full-on princess mode from 3 to 5, but then entered a rebound phase where she started rejecting all things princess, or pink (at 13, she's now willing to re-add pink to her wardrobe). I would hang the decal on his door (back or front). Kids love photos of themselves and photos of their family. So at the foot of his bed I would hang a print (could even be a canvas wrap) of him with his family in the largest size you can afford. EDIT: make sure you hang it low, so he can see it easily! Or you could do a collage frame with shots of various extended family members. My little guy loves pointing out the people he knows in photos (he'll be three in March) and it helps little ones feel a connection with family who is far away that they might not see often, if that is a situation you can relate to. Other than that, a low pile rug that he can drive cars and build with blocks on and you're finished! It's a perfect room for a little one to grow up in: just enough room to play and small enough to tidy easily, a neutral wall colour to let his imagination do the work, a big mirror for dress-up days and making faces and generally admiring himself. Good job! Oh, and about the window, go with the code spacing for railings when determining the safety (I think it's 4"). If he can back his body out and his head gets trapped, oh no.

Toddlers are fascinated by virtually everything, including all things grown up. Teens might have strong ideas though, or, on the other hand, be very relaxed, or be anywhere in between. So I'd let older girl take the lead, so to say..making sure though none of the choices is too scary or unsettling for an imaginative toddler (some things one can't fully prevent...say I grew up in the room full of books, but as much as I loved them, at one point I had this nightmare that all the heroes of the books become alive at night. Including Hound of Baskervilles and such. So it would be still my Mom sitting with me and making me a cup of tea at 2 am, for a couple nights.) I agree to carefully consider needs first-storage, work space, play space..go by function, decor desicions should follow that. Of course plan/pics would help us to understand the room in question more and maybe come up with more helpful, less generalized suggestions.

Stick with a medium slate blue like Benjamin Moore "britannia blue #1623" on all the wall and by using a white/cream chair rail as well as other white/cream trim you can give it a sophisticated look that can grow with your son. Adding colorful curtains, rugs, and accessories you can easily make it his room without having to deal with repainting in a few years.

Well I'm sure you've picked your paint by now - sorry I'm late to the party, but I painted our boys rm. a light silvery, blue-gray called Silverware from Lowes. It's an old color and the chip is no longer out but it is in their fandeck. Valspar maybe or Enterprise. Pretty sure it's Enterprise paint but the last can I got was mixed in Valspar since they don't carry Enterprise anymore.

After I painted the room (w/ crisp white trim) and before moving the furniture back in I just sat in there thinking how peaceful, serene and beautiful it was.

I have it decorated in red, white, navy and tan.

The rest of my house is also decorated in greys, taupes and browns.

Thanks for the suggestions! We ended up going with our original plan which is Ashley Gray on 3 walls and Philipsburg Blue on an accent wall.
I was worried this colour scheme wasn't playful enough (though I love these colours) so I decided I can make it punchy with accents and linens. :)
