This is just my simple opinion but I think a black sink would be a mistake. Not everything has to match. Look at sites with photos of kitchens and you'll see light countertops with light sinks or stainless steel sinks but not any that I've seen with black sinks.

Even in black and white kitchens you don't see black sinks. scroll down this link and you'll see a kitchen with a black counter top stainless and black stove and a stainless sink. There are also light counters with dark cabinets and white sinks etc. A good reference site.

Gotta agree with buddyrose...I wouldn't do it (personally)...especially since you'll have dark brown cabinets. I think the black sink with light granite and then the brown cabinets would just be too much. The sink is one thing that doesn't really have to match the appliances...even if you're a matchy-matchy kind of person.

I would go with stainless steel as my first choice (in sinks, I think it's a total non-issue...a neutral) and white as my second.

The dark Silgranit is a FABULOUS sink, and for that reason alone, I think it's worth considering. But I'd agree that the aspect of 'matching' with your black appliances is a non-issue.

How would it look? It might actually look wonderful, and I'd look for pictures before deciding it wouldn't.

I found a few examples of a light granite with a black sink. We plan to use the black sinks in both the counter and Island with either white spring/alaskan white, taupe white granite.

buddyrose: thanks for supplying the link to more kitchen photos. You're right, there are few kitchens shown that do use a dark sink with light granite. It's been hard finding any visuals.
Sarah: I should have mentioned that SS is the one sink I don't want. Maybe the quality has changed since my days of SS sink, but I hated the ones I grew up with.

phaze: Thanks for finding the pictures of light granite with dark sinks. It helps too that some of them have dark cabinets to boot. You're good! I came up mostly empty handed when I searched. Nice to hear you are making a 'design choice' to use the dark sinks with your light granite. It is good to know I'm not alone in the thinking.

Now for the 'rest-of-the-story' which I didn't want to post in case it influenced responses: This isn't so much a case of wanting matchy-match as liking balance and probably #1 reason is that I'm trying to be prudent.

4 years ago we were going to do a mini reno, paint the cabinets white (no kidding they were mint green-came with the house), add dark countertops & the black undermount sink. We painted the cabinets and bought the sink. The reno stalled. Fast forward to present day. It is no longer a mini reno. New dark cabs, light counters, BUT, the previously purchased black sink still sits in the basement, along with the faucet set I no longer want to use.
The practical cost-counting side of me says, 'You've bought it..use it'.
However having said that, I can likely recoup some of the $$ by selling it Craig's List style and what is a few hundred dollars more in the grand scheme of things?

Design wise, I think I'd still like the look of the dark sink, but not if it is going to look like a big black hole in the stretch of counter. On the other hand, it might just fit right in and end up looking neutral because of the quantity of black I will already have.

Anyway, now you know why it is a bit of a bigger deal for me to decide which choice to make.

katienic thanks for giving more info. I had a similar situation in that I have a perfectly good stove but thought something different would look prettier with the new counters etc. In the end, do what you think you'll be happiest with. You probably won't redo your kitchen for years so pick what you really, really like. You can sell the sink on Craigslist. I've sold lots of things there. if you think you'll like the look of a dark sink with light counter tops than definitely use what you already have. Why spend more money than you have to.

I've decided my stove will look just fine and that $800+ I'll save can go towards something else. ;-)
