What do you think of this rug in my living room?

I picked up this rug today, because I liked how all the colors work in my room, even though it is more traditional/flowery than anything else that I have. It is a hooked wool rug.

Here it is with our coffee table/ottoman in place:

And also, I've been thinking of eventually getting these drapes from Ikea, but I'm not sure how it will all work together. I don't know if I should forget about a rug, or get something a bit more geometric. I am not good at mixing patterns. I also plan on changing out the wall art, and possible painting the walls a muted grayed out blue/green color, which is in both the curtains and the rug.

I love that rug Terriks, it's fun and happy and looks great in your room! Without the table it may be a little busy but once you put the table on it, it looks really nice. I would not use those drapes with it though. I would get solid drapes in a color you pull from the rug (yellow maybe?) Or if you're really wanting pattern for the drapes, a stripe with some of the same colors would probably work very well. Matching two floral prints together can be a real challenge, but a small stripe and flowers can look great together.

Thanks for all your kind comments. It sure is a pleasant change from white walls and outdated valances and we are loving it! The paint color is Bungalow Gold from Eddie Bauer Valspar at Lowes. The drapes are crimson by Argentina from Bed Bath and Beyond.

Val: I know this was a very hard decision for you. Bravo to you for giving it a try despite all the drama involved. :) It took us a long time to find most of our rugs. Some we loved to death and had a hard time talking ourselves out of because of one reason or another. When we did find the right ones, it was like it was meant to be... right color, size, condition, etc..... We were able to bring them home, put them down and just stop thinking about whether they were right or wrong because they were perfect for us in every way. There was never any second guessing. I know there are rugs out there just waiting for you to find them. Don't exhaust yourselves trying to find one w/in a set time frame. Shop when you have the time and the energy. It may take months, or it may just take days... but please take your time and enjoy the journey. One more thing. Some dealers may seam snooty, and some may even BE snooty... but the good ones know their stuff and want you to be happy w/ your rug. Some will want to educate you and some won't want to bother. Never tell a dealer what your budget is as some will never show you any less than your upper range. If pressed, just say that you must keep it under $xxx, which should be less than you really are willing to spend. I look forward to seeing your future finds!

Busybee3, I too lovet the PB one the best but the more I look at it I like the 1) one in the lantern style also. One thing I am considering is may be get the PB one and try it if it does not work in entry way I need a light fixture for my dinning also I can use it there? the only concern with doing that is the dinning only is 8 ft celing and this may be a bit too tall for that area? I need to make this decsion fast we will be having my brothers family visting the week of christmas and new year and also hosting christamas party at out house so need to decide soon. Any more opnions on the PB one VS the first lantern ? Thanks

What Do You Think Of A Curtain-Less Living Room?

Our last house was in a neighborhood in a rural area. There were farm fields on two sides of the house. I put curtains on the living room window that faced the street, but in 12 years of living there, never got around to window coverings on any of the other windows, not even the one in the bathroom (it faced a cornfield). I didn't mind it, but Mr. Hammer's OCD brother who lived in a city was deeply disturbed. I thought the bare windows brought in a lot of light, didn't collect dust, and gave us some gorgeous views of the countryside.

I agree with what lukkiirish said as far as having two different floral prints in the room - it just does not work well, unfortunately. Solid color drapes would look best, I believe.

The rug pattern is great in your room! The colors are perfect. I would at least try the curtains in the room. Those patterns could coexist peacefully as long as the curtains are decorative only and do not close (so they would not display a large field of pattern to compete with the rug.

Very pretty. The rug offers a lot of versatility in terms of its palette. I, too, would go ahead and try the curtains with the rug. It seems to pick up enough of the same motif that it might coordinate really nicely. Agree that I wouldn't close it, though.

It's hard to believe that rug was not made to go in that room! It's perfect.

I wouldn't use those curtains with it though.

The rug actually works really well with my current window treatments, which are roman shades topped with a valance:

I've just been longing for woven wood shades and side panels. I wish that I could buy more of the fabric that I used for the valance and trim on the romans, but I made it from some drapery panels about 6 years ago, and they have been discontinued.

I like the look of these panels from West Elm:

I have to say, the rug is really growing on me. I got it at the most unexpected place - Big Lots - and it was only $128, and it's 100% wool.

That is a great rug for your room! and it's so nice to see some warm lively colors! The west elm drapes would be nice; the IKEA drapes are a little too similar to the rug to work well.
