You can also measure it. A stick of butter is half a cup or 8 tablespoons. When I used to buy whole lbs to bake with at the holiday time I'd just cut the whole block in four to make it easier.

Could you just cut it in to four "sticks"? You might want to weigh them to be sure before you use a "stick", but that's what I'd do.

Actually I would....and have...cut a pound brick into 1/4 lb slabs, rather than sticks....
But I regualrly eyeball butter measurements.

Almost all butter in Canada is sold in pound blocks. I always thing the stick thing a little exotic! LOL

The wrapper on the pound blocks comes with markers on the side showing where to cut for pounds, oz or cups....very handy.

But I do know this 1 pound equals 4 sticks...

As Sharon mentioned butter here comes in one pound blocks, except for a few brands and they charge a premium for packaging it in 1/4 pound sticks. Hardly worth paying a premium for something so simple to do yourself. Like Linda, I just eyeball butter measurements. Just cut the pound of butter in half and each half in half again. Presto. 1/4 pound squares.

Thanks everyone. Here's the problem I had.

I thought the butter I bought was already cut into sticks; when I got home from Costco with all that butter, I stuck the whole shebang into the freezer. Then when I was ready to bake, I took out one brick of it thinking each stick was individualy wrapped and I'd just take out what I need. Nope. A solid frozen brick of butter.

So cutting it into sticks was out of the question because I couldn't cut it in a straight equal amount without it chunking off. So I thought if I cut some off and weighed it, I'd be ok.

I wasn't even thinking a lb = 16 oz and 4 into 16 would be 4. I really can do the math but for some reason I was over thinking this whole thing.

So..... lesson learned here - when I buy butter at Costco again, as soon as I get home with it, I'll cut each brick into 4 sticks, wrap each stick in a baggie and then put them all into a zip lock bag and freeze it.

How interesting about Canadian butter. Makes me appreciate wrapped sticks now.

Shaun, I had the same challenge a few months back with butter from Sam's. They always have the quarters but this time it was a one pound block. I caught it before putting it in the freezer and cut it up like some mentioned above.

I've noticed the Canadian butter before on cooking shows. Ours is marked of by the tablespoon on the 1/4 lb. sticks.

Shaun, Your life is so complicated LOL. I always buy the 4 - 1 pound package of Costco butter. So thanks for the heads up if this product has changed from 1/4# sticks to 1# blocks.

Hahaha! I know it Cathy! Sheesh!!!! And the weird part was that the paper the brick of butter was wrapped in had no measurement markings!

AnnT you had a good idea too, just cut in half and then cut the halves in half. Easy.

Some things are just so darned simple once you know what you're doing huh?

Bumblebeez, it isn't just in Canada. I use to buy bricks of butter when I lived in the US too. Less packaging to dispose of since a brick of butter isn't normally boxed, just wrapped in foil. I usually just buy one or two pounds of butter at a time. So I never freeze it.

To tell you the truth I find the sticks annoying. Way too much packaging, the box and then individually wrapped. I just don;t understand the need to have butter in 1/4 pound hunks.

As well I don't like the look of them on a butter plate at the dinner table, even half a stick. I prefer a nice square slab about 1/2 inch thick.

We Canadians are so practical...... LOL

I've never seen butter in a brick here.

At my Costco..you have the choice..in sticks or in bricks...It's only a few cents less to buy it in the bricks..
I buy sticks most of the time..and I also buy the organic butter sticks from there.(We use that for spreading and cooking eggs.)

I noticed Friday when I was there..that butter's prices had dropped again...

All my butter dishes are made for sticks...LOL!

Ok, those of you who use the bricks, how do you store it? Do you have a butter brick dish?

I just bought butter at costco today and stored in the freezer immediately, This thread turned a light on in my head and I checked out my frozen butter, BLOCKS! Thabnks for the wakeup, LOL. I've done this before but I always take out my frozen butter a pound at a time, store it in a plastic container, taking out a stick at a time. Just have to remember to thaw it long enough before I need it so I can cut it into sticks. A bit of a pain but no big deal. I have an "English" butter covered dish that seems to hold about a 1/3 pound square but DH doesn't like it because you have to scoop it up rather than slice down into it.

Shaun, yup, there are butter dishes that hold a brick. Most refrigerators use to come with a tray that held a one pound brick.

I don't put butter out on the table in a stick or a brick. But I do have three butter dishes that are meant to hold a brick of butter. But I bought them to keep different salts in.
