Hello!

I posted this on flooring, but thought maybe some of you DIYers could help...

I have to replace my kitchen floor. There are 3 layers of vinyl peel-n-stick tiles, and the top layer is now peeling and curling around the edges of the individual squares and it's quite painful on little bare feet.

Has anyone tackled this before? Any hints? I would especially like to do this without chemicals.

I used adhesive dissolver in a bathroom last year but those tiles were already peeling away on their own. It made me really sick, though.

For the record, there is NO asbestos in the room. The subfloor itself was replaced in the 1990s and I personally laid all 3 floors since then. We got a few years out of each with tremendously heavy daily use, so I can't complain. :)

You might also try posting on theHome Repair Forum.

I would try using my Dremel Multi-Max using the rigid scraper blade. There are similar tools made by other companies. Fein apparently makes the best one.

I did it once using a putty knife to lift it. A hot hair dryer helps to soften the glue. Be aware that the floor will be extremely sticky once you lift the tiles.

We are having a terrible time getting tile up, the thinset is left behind and dh is chipping it out with an air chisel a little each day, then we pulled up the vinyl and their is a rubber papery surface underneath, the house is 28 years old, do you have any tips to help us make these two jobs easier? we are so sick of this we are about ready to quit, but budget dictates we do the preliminary work.

I am doing the same project as you are. I just had my old Porcolein tile removed down to the original T and G subfloor. The guys used a medium size Hilti hammer drill. Basicly a small jack hammer and went at it. This was very hard tile. Once they had the tile broken up they used a skill saw to cut down to the T-G subfloor. Then they used a big pry bar to pick it up in sections. I had 2 inches of floor to remove to get to the T-G subfloor. If you have a cheap ceramic tile you may be able to break it up with a good size hammer. I started with one but made little progress. Then they got out the big stuff. Good luck in with job! Remember to wear safty goggles. This is glass that is exploding all over the place!

I also would advise just doing the wood flooring throughout. If you get good, high end materials wood is surprisingly durable and the new technologies make it a lot more maintenance-free than past products. FWIW I also live in Florida and have engineered HW floors throughout my house including the kitchen and our DR which has French doors that lead to the backyard, and which is the main entry area for most of my foot traffic. Haven't had any problems with dirt or moisture anywhere. Also, if you may be thinking resale it will be a lot more desirable to have the same nice flooring throughout the house. Someday you may have buyers who look askance at two sections of a house with different floors, especially since you say your choice is somewhat unique and would be hard to match down the road. So my advice is get a rug for the craft room and a leak-proof pan for your washer and go with the hardwood. Ann

asbestos vinyl tiles removed - risk level?

hi my case: Son has an old house (1960). Most of house had dirty carpet when bought and had a flooring company replace carpet without looking under it. Now, years later decided to remove carpet. Under carpet were the 9x9 tiles. Most tiles were okay, but several were broken so took all tile out (they mainly popped up, but some broke and also did some scraping). Some dust was made, but could be from carpet and pad. Mopped floor after. Under tiles is the black cutback mastic, now uncovered. Area is about 200 sqft. Got rid of the tiles so cant be tested, but I assume to contain asbestos. Also removed carpet in a bedroom (10x10), which also has tiles underneath, but left the tiles in place and covered most of area with an area rug. Doubtful any protective masks were used, and certainly not by others living in the house at the time, as well as now. Questions: Is that level of exposure serious (been a few months since removed)? Are roommates at any risk? Can just walking on the exposed mastic release fibers? Should air get tested? What can be used to cover the cutback mastic? Wants to lay vinyl sheeting in the area (or anything else recommended?). Is it okay to re-lay carpet in the bedroom over the tiles? Should he/me be too concerned? gracie01, I had to throw away my shoes the last time I did this because they basically got stuck to the old floor! It was a sticky mess. :)

Lift the corner of a tile using a putty knife and/or screwdriver and/or razor floor scraper and direct the hairdryer underneath to heat up the glue, take your time and let it get nice and hot - it will peel off... and on to the next one. Use the razor scraper for any pieces that won't loosen with the heat, and possibly the bottom layer might be adhered to the subfloor.

We did a bathroom remodel and had the vinyl tile flooring removed. I don't know what machine my GC used, but he rented something from the local hardware/building supply store and removed approx. 100 sq ft of vinyl tile very quickly. Maybe you could call/go by your local store and ask them what they recommend. And I agree w/ a previous poster, it left a very sticky mess behind.

I actually used a circular saw set at the appropriate depth and removed the underlayment (particle board) just above the subfloor and then laid down a new underlayment. That avoided the whole sticky mess and let me get things leveled out before I tiled. Putting down new underlayment was a bit of a pain (maneuvering big sheets of particle board), but at least the removal was quite painless. I just set the depth of the circular saw, put on safety glasses, gloves, and a good quality mask. As I cut sections I used a prybar to pry them up and throw them out.

I am trying to guess how long this might take. Because of the sticky residue (and the fact that it is our heavily-used kitchen) it's not exactly a project I can leave partially finished.

The tiny bathroom took a weekend, but we have another bathroom we were able to use...

Well, I got lucky and the weather turned hot and a tad humid here (odd for spring). The floor just peeled off; the top layer took the bottom layer with it!

It's still sticky, but boiling water and dish soap helped scrub some of it adhesive residue off. I'm not going to get it perfectly clean because another floor is going on top of it tomorrow.
