ok--guess the cookbook author please...

i just got off the phone with dad a little bit ago. i know i've talked about how difficult he is to buy for--doesn't want or need anything and no matter what you get him, there is a "but" that goes with it. unbelievably, we nailed it this year! who would have thought that a couple of sweater vests would not only fit properly but that he'd like the colors? i'd say that perhaps christmas has come early for us--it honestly is a big deal :)

during the course of the conversation, he said something i've never heard before--he said there were 2 things that he'd like! one was a hohner chromatic harmonica and that's easy enough. the other was a cookbook! i could hardly get pen and paper out fast enough to record this information! unfortunately, he couldn't remember who the author was but fortunately, i have some time to figure this out and i have you guys to help! he thinks the guy is sicilian and he LOVES to cook and dad sees him on tv sometimes! and that's where he started to get lost. michael chirarello? no--big guy. maybe 6' 2" or a little more and 250 #--big guy. does he wear his hair slicked back in a pony tail, perhaps? like nick stellino or mario betalli? no, no. BIG guy and he loves to cook. ok. that's all i know today. i asked him to write down the name the next time he sees him and he said he's done that but then it gets mixed in with other papers and gets tossed out. hmm. i've seen his place plenty of times and trust me when i say that in all likelihood, that scrap of paper is still there, somewhere... so--any guesses for me to run by pop before i speak with him next?

It sounds like Mario to me. He wears his hair a pony tail and is a big guy.

Hi, I'm in the UK and just found this forum after searching for any potential insight into what amount of water specifically to use to make up Rachels Lemon & Pink Grapefruit Marmalade (as this is not specified...and so I could be out by a mile and put the whole expensive recipe in jeopardy). I read with interest many of the comments from folk worried about how best to process their cooked jam. Here in the UK our system is far more simplistic and more commonly done with a one piece lid where (and as akin to irenecalgary) we pour the hot jam into hot jars before sealing with hot lids and immediately inverting them for 10 mins before placing back upright whilst they cool off. In the case of strawberry jam and marmalades etc we would allow the mix to cool dlightly such that the fruit does not rise to the surface in the jar This is effectively the way our Grandmothers have always made jams (outside of those who still opt for an even simpler wax disc system covered in cloth in place of a lid) and we consider this as perfectly safe. If on the offchance a jar is discovered to contain a covering of white mold (rare to middling) on opening then its chucked out..simple as. If I was taught an entirely different way then i'd no doubt be more likely to fly that flag. For the record, I quite fancy the idea of canning certain foodstuffs containing meat and vegetables but we can't buy a Pressure Canner without importing one as canning is not so much practised in the UK. Again, horses for courses.

Well, it might be difficult to find this one, as it has been in and out of print. George Leonard Herter, an 'oddball know-it-all' in the words of the New York Times, ran a sporting goods company and he wrote most of the copy for the catalog. OK, here's a quick and easy dessert that's still a good old fashioned comfort food and relative nutritious as desserts go. (grin) Blueberry Crisp-GrandmaÂs ================ 3 cups blueberries, fresh or frozen, unsweetened 2 tbls lemon juice 2/3 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup flour 1/2 cup quick oats 1/3 cup butter, softened 3/4 tsp cinnamon 1/4 tsp salt . Heat oven to 375. Arrange berries in ungreased square baking dish (8 inch) and sprinkle with lemon juice. Combine remaining ingredients until crumbly. (I use a pastry blender, grandma used two knives). Crumble topping over berries and bake until topping is lightly browned and berries are hot, about 30 minutes. Makes 4-6 servings. I double this and it still comes out good. Plus blueberries are low in calories, have lots of fiber and no fat, contain antioxidants C, E and beta carotene and have been found to be as helpful in urinary tract health as cranberries. That's why I need ice cream with them, they are just too darned healthy. LOL Blueenough, it's clear that your daughter was a wonderful person and well loved by her family and community. It's always too soon to lose a child, a mother, a wife, and so I'm sending my prayers for strenth and healing to you all. I have two suggestions: A Platter of Figs by David Tanis or Ad Hoc [ can't recall the author, check Amazon] the latter is visually impressive. Oversize book. Both are attractive books, inventive, any chef would be pleased to receive them. And the fact that his/her clients thought to bring a gift will make the BEST impression. Happy Holidays!

MIke Colameco recently lost some weight and cut his ponytail, but he still has a PBS show cooking show and I listen to him on WOR talk radio (NY). Maybe?

I was going to say Colameco or Nick Stellino also! I noticed Colameco cut his pony tail off. I don't think Colameco has a cookbook. I like his show! I'd go with Nick Stellino. Big guy with a ponytail AND cookbooks!

I have no clue other than Mario...Michael Ch has short hair.

And a related question...who was the Canadian (Italian) show host who also had a cookbook, the only detail of which I can remember was that it was large...like 12-14" by 9or 10" and had yellow on it.

Ok, if I'm reading correctly, you think he's Italian, big (as in tall and hefty) and does NOT have a ponytail. Is taht right?

Two things that would be good clues is if he can remember if he saw the guy on tv on his own show (and what station) or always as a guest on someone else's and WHAT he cooks.
for some reason, I thought of Nick Maligieri, but NM mostly does baking.

thanx guys--i'll get this figured out one of these days. now i had asked about michael chiarello and he said no--that's when he told me the guys was big, so i asked about stellino or betalli and the slicked back hair/ponytail and he said no again. but terri might have something with johnny and damian...i'm not familiar with them but that doesn't mean dad isn't. and rocco isn't big/hefty enough to match up with what dad meant but gee joe, perhaps you are! dad just turned 91 and while i usually think my memory is more clear and straight-forward than his, that's not ALWAYS factual :) he's pretty clear on world events and syracuse university sports--that's for sure! sometimes i just have a difficult time making the connections in thinking that he does...

and bean--you are right! i certainly could have asked him if this cook had his own show or was guesting... i was just so floored to hear him say there was something he wanted, i wasn't thinking as fast as i should have been! i appreciate the thoughts and will work to get the answer. and it's great to have these other names to offer up to him--thanx alot and keep them coming, please!

Not Italian at all but he's big and Loves to cook!! How about Emeril LeGasse?...He looks a little Italian....and cooks with lots of tomatoes and garlic....

dishes--i love watching robert irvine--i think he's just great all the way around! i think dad would have said "muscular" if that's who he was referring to but i'll add that to my list of possible names :)

and frankly linda--i think you have a real possibility with emeril. i believe he's at least part portugeuse but wasn't he raised in some predominantly italian area of MA? i just can't remember the details...but dad is pure russian and if you aren't part of the russian/polish/baltic background, i think most others likely seem sort of the same to him. anyway, i'll add emeril to the list of possibilities! actually, i wish i'd thought to come up with that name this afternoon...

My guess is also the late actor Vincent Schiavelli. He was huge (6'5"), Sicilian, was on TV occasionally and wrote three cookbooks. He was one of the ghosts in "Ghost."

From imdb: Vincent Schiavelli, selected in 1997 by Vanity Fair as one of the best character actors in America, had made over 120 film and television appearances. He studied acting at NYU's Theatre Program. Aside from his acting career, Vincent was the author of three cookbooks, and has written numerous articles on food for magazines and newspapers. In 2001, he received the James Beard Journalism Award.

Good grief, is Mr. BAM still around even? Yeah, he's part Portuguese -- much to DH's dismay he's not only Portuguese, but born in the same town DH's family is from. I keep telling him they could be related, and he keeps telling me not even joke about that.

EL is not very tall, though. Stout, but not very tall. When I think "BIG guy", I think more like Mario or Rocco.

Diana's bio of Vincent Schiavelli leads me to the following suggestion: google the "likely suspects" and find their bios online. Then, print out the photos that you find and show them to Dad. Even though he doesn't remember the name, he'd probably recognize the photo.

Vincent Schiavelli....go rent 'One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest' again. Fun to see him, Christopher Lloyd and Danny Devito (both with hair). RIP Vincent, great character actor, didn't know he cooked!

I also thought 'Emeril' when I first read san's description.
