There's no photos in it, but The Glorius Foods of Greece is my "go-to" for great Greek recipes. It's by Diane Kochilas.

I've hurt my wrist and can't type much right now, but I found a link to one of the recipes from the book if you want to take a look. I have made this dish, and it's delicious.

The first thing I'd have to do is learn Greek.
I learned a lot when I built my BIL's Restaurant but all the bad things.
I think the only Greek thing I cooked, was Souvlaki.
When he first opened we had to test the Barbecue Grill.
We cut up Pork Tenderloins and Marinated them in EVOO , Wine, Garlic and spices.

I chopped some Garlic, Onions, Parsley, and added some spices,in EVOO,
While the pork tenders were cooking on the barbecue.

Threw a Pita on the Grill for a minute and put some of this mixture on the Pita,
Then the Kabob of pork. Folded it and went to Souvlaki Heaven.

Lou, very cool experience! My brother loves cookbooks probably more than I do and that's saying something.

All he asked for for his birthday was a Greek CB and I really wanna find him a good old T&T that he can leaf through and add to his cuilinary knowledge that's authentic and visually appealing.If someone has such a book I want to know and hunt it down for him :)

My personal favorite is "The Foods of Greece" by Aglaia Kremezi. Gorgeous photography. Authentic (as best I know). I can recommend highly the "Fresh Cheese with Garlic and Dill", the "Stuffed Vine Leaves with Fava Beans," the "Country Bread," and the "Sour Cherry Preserve."

sands, I knew I'd seen this topic being discussed before and went searching. Sure enough... There's a poster at recipezaar, "evelyn/athens", who hosts the Greek forum. She's bright and funny and a wonderful cook. (A transplanted Canadian, actually.) She says her go-to cookbook for authentic stuff is "The Best Book of Greek Cookery", by Chryssa Paradissi. I presume it's been translated into English but have no clue if it's a beautiful coffee-table kind of thing or just a nondescript little pamphlet or somewhere in between.

One poster to the thread I found said she'd ordered a copy through a used book dealer at www.abebooks.com. She was thrilled that the one she received had been autographed by the author. That would be kind of fun, wouldn't it? Maybe you could email them and ask if they had any more that she'd signed. (Someone posted after that to say they'd dealt with the abebooks site several times and been very pleased. I'd never heard of them before, but it sounded legitimate.)

While searching, I ran across another thread from someone who wanted to know what she should buy in Greece. The top three items were: honey, ouzo, dried herbs. Evelyn said it should definitely be Greek Thyme Honey. And that Greek oregano was the best in the world. If you can find sources, I think it would be so cool to give him the cookbook plus a couple of really special ingredients to use when trying the recipes.

If there is any left , then you can use it in cooking. LOL

I went to " Home and Gardens". In " Search" I typed in Greek Cookbooks.
There was one ( Best Book of Greek Cooking, 1972 )
Do you buy in Ebay ??? The prices looked good.

Here is a greek cookbook I LOVE -- called Foods of the Greek Islands by Aglaia Kremezi... What I've made has been delicious, nice photos, some background about the various islands, and almost everything in there is something I want to eventually try..

Thanks guys! I am seeing some familiar [author] names from the books I've looked into thus far, that's a good sign. Em, yours sounds alot like what I'm looking for but I'm definitely going to check out a few of the suggestions! Without a recommendation there just seems to be an overwhelming amount of choices, so thank you thank you everyone! Lou, I ebay and alibris but only when I know what I want - shopping online should be limited to ambushing the item you want, browsing on the internet stinks. :)

I bought Greek Cooking in an American Kitchen after Oly recommended it during the Phyllo class at Jessy's house. I've made a bunch of recipes from the book, and they've all been very good and very easy, but no photos. The book was composed by a committee from the St. Demetrios Church in Seattle, and I've had some of the best Greek food in Seattle (as well as in Vancouver and Houston).

You may recall the video I posted of spanakopita, using a recipe from this book. I need to get around to editing more videos from the class, but where is the time?

I'll add another vote for Foods of the Greek Islands by Aglaia Kremezi. It's a good all-around book of Greek food. We love the recipe for roasted potatoes with garlic, lemon and oregano.
I also like Diane Kochilas and Rosemary Baron, but this book is my favorite for Greek food.

Being Greek, most of the recipes I use are from my Mom, Grandmothers, and aunts, but I do have quite a few Greek cookbooks. My favorite one is called "Popular Greek Recipes" and it consists of recipes compiled by The Ladies of the Philoptochos Society at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Charleston, South Carolina. As of 2003, the book was in it's fourteenth printing. Unfortunately, it doesn't have pictures but it does have a great variety of recipes similar to the kind of cooking I had growing up.

I just ordered "The Glorius Foods of Greece" because there were recipes in the index that sound like ones I've been looking for - food that my grandparents talked about that I haven't been able to find anywhere! The reviews on Amazon DID indicate that this book is not a Greek primer - it's more for people who already have the basic recipes and want to find special recipes that are indigenous to certain areas.

Sands, just check the gallery. I've been having a great time with it so far.
