Cookbook Program Recommendations?

I'm a newbie to this particular forum, but a regular on the Decorating and Holidays forums (and a former regular over on Kitchens). I did a search here to see if this was a former topic, but came up with zero, so my question is . . .

Does anyone have the Living Cookbook program for their computer? What do you think of it? Easy to use?

I've been looking for the best program for me for a while now. I think that this might be it, but I don't want to waste my time and money before running it past fellow GWers. GW is always the best place, I've found, for good practical info.

I love to cook and am good at it. I own tons of cookbooks and actually started my own several years ago. I used the Master Chef computer program, which was pretty good, but ended up causing too many computer glitches before expiring. I'm finally ready to give it another try . . . if I can find the right program for my needs.

For me, that's more about creating my own personal cookbook with my favorite recipes, which are many. I'm always up for adding more good recipes and so having a ready source to look at is an added bonus. But, my main concern is that a program has a good format for me to create an extensive, many chaptered personal cookbook. Not to print out, but just to keep on my laptop here in my kitchen to use every day.

Anybody out there that has an experience with Living Cookbook program . . . or any others?

TIA for any and all info!

I just have my recipes in a file called "Recipes"...original isn't it! LOL!
I name the recipes things like "dessert, cake, apple, Jill's" so the computer arranges them and I can easily find what I am looking for....some recipes are double filed like under "cake apple" or "Cake spice with apple" Doesn't hurt to have 2 copies in the file.

I recently downloaded the free trial of living cookbook and so far I like it. I just haven't had time to do much with it.

You might want to try the free 30 day download before buying to see how you like it.

I like the menu planning/grocery list parts of it. Cuts down time I spend on that.

I have been a vegetarian for more than 2 decades. The books by Jeanne Lemlin are great. They don't require trips to special stores, and are easy to prepare. I'll link my favorite below. Also, not a book, but I absolutely LOVE this soup. It's even vegan. Very simple to make, so nutritious. Even my kids love it. For some reason, though, I don't like it as much when I double a batch. (You might like this site for other recipes, too, though I use them mostly for the rest of the family, as they aren't vegetarians.) http://www.melskitchencafe.com/creamy-spinach-soup/ I'm very interested in this thread, though, because I know what you mean . . .it's hard to find vegetable dishes prepared in exciting ways (in the US). Cookbook recommendations for low salt diets?

Grainlady's suggestion is a good one. You can explore the cookbooks without paying out any money and you may just discover that you really don't think they're worth investing in at all. I've been dealing with low sodium cooking for about three years now. I started a blog about it last year. If you go to my blog you'll find a section listing low sodium information websites. I'd definitely recommend Low Sodium Cooking.com and MegaHeart.com. http://www.lowsodiumcooking.com/ http://www.megaheart.com/ Both the websites also contain recipes, helpful information, and a free newsletter that you can sign up for. Also, both website authors have published low sodium cookbooks. You could make a point of looking for their books. Or just refer to their recipe sections. Grainlady hit on an important concept. I have a few favorites left out of the many I've owned over the years. I've seen these Leisure Arts Memories In the Making Series in our local public library and have used them many times. "In the Nick of Time" "It's In the Bag!" "Quick Gifts of Good Taste" (there are several versions of this title) "The Cookie Jar" (covers all seasons and great ways to package cookies with lots of cookie recipes) Better Homes and Gardens has a number of them. It seems like Sunset also came out with them each year. Check your public library for some title ideas. -Grainlady

cookbook holder recommendation

Buehl, I tested some cookbooks so I could give you a decent answer. I tried my Betty Crocker Cooking Light book. It has a 3 ring binder type spine. It must have additional chapters I can purchase or something, as it is not very full. Therefore, it doesn't work very well in this holder. The plexiglass hinges from the bottom, rests against the rings, but doesn't come close to the pages, which makes it a little hard to read. Might not bother some people, but I have a hard enough time finding my place that I don't need anything throwing me off. I think if it was more full it would work better. Works fine if you don't flip up the plexiglass piece, but then it would get in the way on the countertop. I next tried my huge french cookbook. It has about the same size spine as yours. It accomodated that just fine. However, my french cookbook is so tall and wide, it stuck out beyond the plexiglass on the sides and top. So, maybe pay attention to the dimenstions of your cookbook compared to the dimensions of the holder. Thickness doesn't seem to be a big factor, it is adjustable and can handle a thick book. HTH, Amy

I now have about 300 of our family's favorite recipes in my computer and also on a zip drive for backup or taking on vacation. They are all Microsoft Word documents.

Like Linda, the ease of use for me is how I have the folders and sub-folders set up. For example, if I want a recipe for scallops, I go to "Recipes", "Main Dishes", "Seafood", "Shellfish" folders and all the scallop recipes would be there.

That system works fine for me and my girls so I haven't explored any cookbook software programs. I don't know what additional advantages they have.
