Hi All, We purchased a money tree a year ago. It was doing great: fast growing, green, lush, and lots of enjoyment. Then, it seemed to be outgrowing its pot, and about two months ago I re-potted it. Now, I am getting yellow leaves (about 1 leaf turns yellow per day). The new growth (top canopy) after the re-pot is also very lime green and droopy. But, there was fast growth at first. I am so worried, I love this plant. I want to care for it before the poor leaves/whatever is wrong spreads. Any advice? Based on the literature, I think the roots are holding too much water. But, I am worried to re-pot into more porous soil, since I just re-potted. I've attached a few pictures to aid in our discussion.

I wanted to thank everyone for their great comments. The comment about the detergents is definitely understood. I've seen that come up in several other threads. I was actually thinking that the FAQ needs a good writeup (I'm not qualified to write it) about STPP, phosphates & lack there of, and enzymes. It didn't take much reading here to realize that I was so ignorant about dishwashing soaps. :) I will definitely go and check out a few models to see what the interior is like and gauge which might fit our needs. The Upper Cutlery Tray (thanks alwaysfixin!) is not something I considered... an interesting idea! I am definitely not going Stainless Steel for the front. Saves money, and doesn't go at all with the current kitchen makeup. Plus, I don't think I'm a SS type. Also, thanks (again) alwaysfixin for the warning about their size/depth. I gotta figure out how far back our current one goes to see what will fit. I can measure the counter top for a start.... And for the comment about the coupons. I can always use another $50. Take my wife out to dinner (hey, if we get a new dishwasher, maybe I should get takeout so we can use it.... nah.) I basically never used the heated dry in my old dishwasher. I'd run it over night and dry off whatever was left (and empty the plastics that flipped over!) I guess having it could be handy occasionally, but the energy used kinda offends me. It is interesting speculation as to why we don't use the washer as much. It is true that our current (Dead) one is loud (wish I could measure it to compare to new ones) and we do have an partially open floor plan (kitch/dining/open-door living room - but not family room.) My intent was mostly around the fact that we don't have enough of every type of dish/glass/utencil so that we could leave them dirty while it fills up. So we washed what we didn't have as much of while the other stuff accumulated. Then we'd go "good enough, lets fill it and run it!" and away we'd go. But I won't deny, it was loud. Thanks again for all the info. I'll probably be buying next week (I'm away teaching a class the rest of the week) so I'll update the thread with what I get and what I think. Eric

If a ball valve has a problem it's usually at install. Either a defective ball valve or more likely the installer applied too much heat or took too long when soldering it in. The reason I recommend a three ball bypass along with the OEM bypass is that most dealers want to install just the OEM bypass and the redundancy of the additional three ball bypass, at it's modest cost during installation, is a good idea. With no Kinetico bypass what you have will serve you once the ball valves that leak are taken care of. Understand before you speak with the dealer that the water at the float valve is under system water pressure and all that is between correct operation and failure is the float. The tank drain elbow is provided so that if the float fails the overflow will be directed to a drain cause if it fails when no one is around it will be pumping water into the brine tank at house pressure. If there is no floor drain handy then it is common to drill a hole through an exterior wall and run a PE tube from the brine tank elbow through the wall to the outside. The elbow is a gravity drain and will not run water up. Many softeners are installed disregarding the brine tank drain and as long as the float never fails or leaks it's OK. I've seen quite a few where the float failed and there is substantial water damage. Do not let the dealer minimize the importance of the brine tank drain or say it can be ignored because you're betting a lot on that float mechanism... an awful lot. If something does happen and there is no line to drain there's a chance your homeowner's insurance won't cover the damage. With a washing machine I'd think that one of the Gap-It airgaps from airgap.com will do nicely. Pick the one that accommodates both the washer drain hose and the softener drain hose.

OMG, this is so amusing... Back in 2008 we were planning a major kitchen renovation and I lived on (then) the GardenWeb Appliance Forum. Fast forward, we are now renovating the lake house and I've started checking back on (now) Houzz to get an update. So I am totally struck by how the conversations are identical to those back in 2008! And so are some of the participants (Hi kas, I remember you well!). So...on the issue of hood noise, and in particular of the miracle of Vent a Hood squirrel cage blowers. Jerry J and philbekins...I would get your hearing tested :-) Our VAH at the lake is a 747 compared to the Modern Aire hood with remotely installed Fantech blower with silencer back home. And, many years ago, I not only claimed that, but tried to prove that I was right. So, from 2008: OK: I've been following with great interest keitel's post on VAH hoods and noise. I'm in his camp: our VAH is noisy as all get-out. Others including shannonplus2, juliet3, and john.com have disagreed, arguing that their VAH's are "almost unoticeable on low" to quote john. So, I figured, time to get some objectivity into this discussion (excuse my ego, but I started a new post cuz I think this is of general interest and worried it would get lost in a VAH post). I pulled out my trusty Radio Shack SPL meter, normally used to calibrate the home theater, and took some readings (measuring from ear level when standing at usual cooking distance from range): Our Vent a Hood 42'' 600 cfm hood liner at the lake: 65 decibels at low 67 decibels at high Our Modern-Aire 64'' (1200 cfm) hood liner with remote inline Fantech FKD 10XL blower and LD10 silencer at the main house: 60 decibels at high What does that mean? Well remember decibels are a measure of sound energy on a log scale. Thus, a three decibel increase represents a 10-fold increase in sound energy. Thus, 67 db represents about a 100-fold higher sound energy level versus 60 db. A more useful way of comparing these noise levels would be to reference them to everyday sounds. Here are some examples: 60 db: "normal conversation" [Ref: http://www.howstuffworks.com/question124.htm] 60 db: "conversation in quiet living room" [Ref http://www.epd.gov.hk/epd/noise_education/web/ENG_EPD_HTML/m1/intro_5.html] In contrast: 65 db: "average road traffic at 25 meters from busy primary distribution road" see www.epd.gov above 67 db: level of noise that Caltrans feels justifies construction of a soundwall by an existing freeway Ref: http://www.dot.ca.gov/dist07/resources/soundwalls/samples/synopsis.htm 69 db: the sound of loud snoring 70 db: vacuum cleaner at 10 feet Ref: http://trace.wisc.edu/docs/2004-About-dB/ That's a fancy way of saying that the VAH is way noisy, and the MA/remote blower is very quiet. Could it be our ducting making our VAH noisy? Doubt it, since as I posted before it's a straight shot up from the hood directly into the attic (it's a one story house) and out the roof through 10'' ductwork. Could we have an unbalanced blower? I guess, though both of the two 300 cfm blowers in the VAh are equally noisy and I'd be surprised if they were both defective. Bottom line: this is an apples and oranges comparison. There is no way that it's fair to compare our inexpensive VAH to the very high end Modern-Aire liner/Fantech blower and silencer combo, and I'm not disparaging the VAH hoods, which obviously many folks have had a good experience with. I do think though that this reinforces my belief that if: 1) you want high cfm ventilation 2) noise is a major concern 3) cost is not a primary issue then remote blowers, preferably with silencer, are clearly superior. Just my obsessive 2 cents worth :-)
