Cream of Tartar...can it age?

Don't know the age of my little container of cr. of tartar - can it get old and no longer be effective?

I've used very old cream of tartar and had good results. I checked and wine producers use it indefinitely also. So, whatcha makin'?

I found a recipe for Nutmeg Refrigerator Cookies that I thought I might try but I know my cream of tartar is of the vintage type and didn't want to waste all the butter and sugar. Seems that little container has just always been there but I don't know how long. I think I'll buy a small amount at my local Co-op if they have it. Maybe I'll even remember to put a date on the new supply????

This apple is not on my priority list but it is certainly a remarkable apple. When apple get's punctured, it can grow/heal over, apple in storage doesn't wrinkle. Hey...we could all use some rejuvenating agent in a natural form...couldn't we? LOL.. I might get some scion...just to see if I can grow it here, probably not, this is a long season apple, similar to Granny Smith, but since it's a very old cutlivar from around 1750, it could be a hardy apple and I can extract the agent from the leaves,..well, maybe not but I was reading that it was done. I was in my neighborhood "postal store" yesterday using their copy machine & a tall, slim, good-looking gal came in, I'd guess her age about late 30ties. She was obviously bringing something in to have wrapped & remailed to its source. I overheard her exclaim something about "$99 a month!". Being the curious type, I asked her what she was returning & she replied "Anti-wrinkle cream and it doesn't work!" She went on to say that this product was something she saw heavily advrtised on television (sorry I forgot to ask the product name) & she bought into it, also not realizing it was some kind of ongoing beauty program that was going to cost her $99 a month. She said she thought of keeping her original order as a "moisturizer" but decided that even the first $99 wasn't worth it and "will I ever learn?" The charming lady owner of the postal business kind of smiled at that point and said that she was the fifth woman in the last month who had come in for a re-wrap & return mailing of that very same product! What is it about if something seems to good to be true....

Not to hijack, but in addition to age spots on my hands, I've noticed this year that on my legs I now have these white spots (appears to be loss of pigmentation). These areas are smaller than a pencil eraser and when I do get a little sun at the pool, they will not tan but appear very white. What are these? I always wear at least a 15 spf, but I have an olive complexion and literally tan just by being out in the sun in 30 minutes with sunscreen. I never ever get sunburned, just tan. So what's up with these white spots?

Outside, I have both a a tinted moisturizer (Neutrogena) and a tinted sunscreen that I love (Elta). I put them on every morning, but realistically, they should be reapplied during the day if I'm going to be in the sun, so I'll just need to remember. While I won't be lying on the beach, I will be outside much of each day. Going on a week of college tours with my oldest! And I've never ever been a hat person, sadly. I wish I was but I'm terribly self-conscious about wearing a hat, so the only time I do is when I'm actually at the beach or pool. Boop, I'lm not sure which procedure your question is directed to, but I'm assuming you mean the Photofacial? I looked it up as I've never heard of it, and saw a video that a woman posted showing how she looked before, immediately after and then the following day. Her face was red and splotchy the first day, but she looked normal the next day. As for the laser treatment I had for my one spot, I didn't look like a freak. In fact, I thought it would be worse based on how the dermatologist described it. She said it would turn purpleish and look like a bruise b/f becoming flaky eventually and then fall off. Mine never changed color - it was slightly red around the edges, but the spot stayed brown. Then all of a sudden it was dry/flaky, and just came right off yesterday. Mine was about the size of the eraser on top of a pencil and right smack dab in the middle of my cheek, so very noticeable. I was worried i'd need to cover it up in the days afterward, but I didn't need to.

Good to know for sure, although I suspected it is good forever, because my cream of tartar jar came from my Mom, who passed away 11 years ago and it is a house brand from a department store that has been closed for over 20 years!

20 years! lol and I thought I was bad using my three year old cream of tartar! I make a cheesecake twice a year and use it in the egg whites..so that little jar goes a long way. When I do buy it I put the date on the top with a magic marker.

Today I shopped for groceries and checked out the price of the tiny cream of tartar container.......$2.59 on SALE! So I went to my local Co-op to see if they had it in their bulk herbs and spices. I got one heaping scoop full.....81 cents and that will probably last me another decade or more! And I got 10% off that shopping as a member on the second Saturday of the month. I also got pickling spice, ground nutmeg, and garlic granules.

Here is the cookie recipe:

Nutmeg Refrigerator Cookies (aka slice-and-bake cookies)

1/2 cup butter (1 stick)
1 t. vanilla
2/3 cup sugar
1/3 cup light brown sugar, packed
1 egg
1 1/2 cup a-p flour
1/4 t. cream of tartar
1/4 t. salt
1/2 t. ground/grated nutmeg

Cream butter until fluffy; add vanilla and egg, stir well; stir dry ingredients together in a bowl then add to rest. Blend well, make two logs of the dough and chill 2 hours or up to 1 week.

Slice 1/8" to 1/4" thick. Lay on parchment paper cover baking sheet. Bake at 400*F for 9 minutes. Cool on metal cooling rack.

Another nutmeg cookie that I have made several times. Very pretty too!

Source: Pillsbury Bake-Off Classics II

3/4 cup sugar
1 cup butter, softened
2 t. vanilla
2 t. rum extract
1 egg
3 cups all-purpose or self-rising flour
1 t. ground/grated nutmeg

Heat oven to 350*F. In a large bowl, combine all ingredients except flour and nutmeg. Beat with mixer on medium speed or by hand until light and fluffy. Lightly spoon flour into measuring cup and level off. Stir in flour and nutmeg, mixing well. Divide dough into 6 portions. On lightly floured surface, shape each portion into a long rope about 1/2" in diameter. Cut into 3-inch long lengths or logs. Place on ungreased cookie sheet. (I use parchment paper.)

Bake at 350*F for 12 to 15 minutes or until light golden brown. Cool on racks.

Frosting:

2 1/2 cups powdered sugar
3 TB butter, softened
2-3 TB half-and-half cream or milk
1 t. rum extract
1/2 t. vanilla

In a small bowl, combine frosting ingredients. Spread on cooled cookies. If desired, mark frosting with tines of a fork to resemble bark. Sprinkle lightly with a dash of ground nutmeg. Makes 42 to 48 cookies.
