Experiences with dog seatbelts
Comments (3)I just started using a seatbelt on my dog (almost 2yr old, 47lb mutt). He was just too excited to be "free" in the car. At first he was kind of a pain trying to get the harness on .. but I never gave up and insisted he wear it for each car ride. NOW its easier b/c he associates the harness with the car and he's still jumpy but more willing to put the harness on. The harness I bought I've given a link to below. Its pretty easy to use ... basically put the harness on and when the dogs in the car you just have to slip the car seatbelt through a loop on the harness and CLICK. Very happy we are using the seatbelt now. And its so much safer for everyone. I had heard a sad story that convinced me to DEFINITELY get one ... basically car accident, dog got lose... and who can recover when they are worried about their lost dog. Comments (14)I looked around on the net for more info on the 3 wheeled bike with outrigger arms, supposed to be able to walk four dogs. Could not find it. Think it was closer to two grand than one grand. Your dogs are smaller, and all seem to be about the same size, so you might not need that, even if you were willing the spend the big bucks for it. Having some stretch in the leashes, as mentioned above by another poster, seems a good idea. There were quite a few products on the web for this, but it may be a buy-and-try type of things. The Petco nearest to me has quite a limited variety of products for multiple dog walking. Even with a regular leash, they have metal leashes only in four foot lengths, for example. My new hyper-dog tries to bite thru his leashes, but the handles of these metal leashes are are chewable material! I may end up making something at the hardware store. Like fad diets, products come and go. The Caine Car harness I bought ten years ago can't be found at Petco any more. Now the trend is for stretchable harnesses, but that means they are also more likely to be chewed on. The more dogs one walks, the more thought should be given to problems encountering other dogs. At night I have a decent flashlight, Nebo Redline for $27. This is a compact light with adjustable beam and very fast strobe mode. Tried a bunch of lights on the dogs collar, the latest is a $20 solid/blinking fluorescent light found at Eddie Bauer intended for walkers/bikers. A spray like Halt might be more practical when you have only one dog of your own. I bought a cheap air horn for a buck. Only for a last resort, as it would cause problems with your own dog(s). But I can't see using a spray like Halt or tear gar on strange dog, when you have four of your own to contend with. Odds are fair you or your dog would get the spray. A bright or fluorescent vest is a great investment....See MoreWhat is best collar/harness for Dachshund?
Comments (6)Clare, I have never used one of these but another forum I frequent highly recommends them. Seems to me to look pretty comfortable for them. And bless you for taking in your rescue - what a wonderful forever home she's found in you! april Here is a link that might be useful: hug-a-dox / hug-a-dog harnesses...See MoreFire Safety - how to help a 90lb dog escape 2nd story?
Comments (33)This is a rather old thread but I wish to make a comment anyway since every time I search for fire safety-dogs, it comes up as one of the few resources. Also this thread catapulted me into finding a solution! This is it and I couldn't be more excited to have found it!Someone above mentioned a harness made for letting rescue dogs down from a helicopter into an emergency zone. That looked great until I found the following, which is less than half the price at $70. https://www.x-itproducts.com/how-it-works-large-pet-escape-sling/ At this time it's not offered on Amazon so you have to go directly to the X-It website to order. Ours arrived today. My husband and I tested it out a bit. Okay, we didn't throw our dog out the window however easily got our 80 lb. Golden into the sling/harness very very quickly without any struggle from him (and he's a guy who snaps at being brushed - gently). It's just so easy to get the sling on - slip paws into the large holes, pull up and cinch the velcro at the neck. Next we picked him up using the handles - no problem - and again, not an ounce of struggle. He was obviously well supported and comfortable, even off the floor! We were very happy to discover the sling comes with an attached nylon webbing strap that was way longer than it would take to get him down from our 2nd story bedroom. (It's made for a 4 story building.) Best of all, the "strap" has handle loops every so often taking away the danger of it slipping through your hands while letting your dog down. We're seniors yet I feel confident we can do this if necessary! Of course using this is a last resort and it clearly states that in the instructions. But we feel so much better having a 2nd way out of our 2nd story bedroom for our dog, as well as ourselves (via ladder). We're so grateful someone finally thought of large dogs. Thank you X-It!!! We'll be spreading the word to everyone we know who has dogs. And no, we're not paid by the company, nor have we received any free products! We're simply happy to have finally found this solution. But I agree with some of the above comments, the next house we buy will be one story. Until then, we have a plan....See Moremary_c_gw
