christmas stroll open house thank you!

I wanted to let everyone who was so generous with their suggestions and recipes how it all went. Unfortunately it rained for the stroll so the attendance was down. Our open house was beautiful and everything went smooth as glass! I want to thank everyone individually but I can't refer to the orginal post..it must be on the missing pages. I used the chili recipe as suggested..sort of.. I revised my recipe for chili and used mainly the spices in the one given here. I served it in mugs ( went over Big)

with corn bread sticks. On my round dining room table I had an antique red quilt with little Christmas trees on it, then I had all the white mugs for chili, baskets with the corn bread sticks and sides for the chili. We also served wine, hot cider, oatmeal cookies and raspberry squares. Thank you all for the terrific idea..it wouldn't have been the same with out them.

I just love it when people here come back to tell us all how it went. Congratulaions! It sounds lovely. But, an antique quilt...I would have been scared to death that somebody would have spilled chili on it! You are brave!
I wish I could have been there to see your festive table. I think our neighborhood should do something like that. Hmmm, maybe we will talk about it next year.

I'm sorry the weather didn't cooperate but your table and food and drinks sound perfect and I'm sure everyone loved it all.

The only garden related item I got for Christmas was a book called "The Essential Garden" which appears to be not much more than an advertisement for various garden tools and equipment. So as a consolation, I treated myself to my first begonia (6" with orange blossoms, very elegant looking) and my first marginata dracaena, which is too big for the spot I was trying to fill. There are 4 plants in the pot, so as soon as I can purchase some more decorative pots, I will divide it. I'd like to put something else in the pot with it, that will spill over the side. What pairs well with the marginata dracaena? I have always had one type of plant per pot, but I want to create little indoor container gardens. I just want to be sure I pair up plants that have similar needs. Anyone have any suggestions?

Seriously, Christmas dinner here is the day after when my husband gets home. We eat at dinner time (5 or 6 pm). If you do show up (it is an invitation, after all), be prepared for a rude awakening as the dining room table is full of brug cuttings. You will have to sit in the living room & balance your plate on your lap. Doing this puts it at the perfect nose-height for a 150 lb Newfie (who drools & will steal shamelessly). We consider cat hair extra insulation for the winter & it is applied liberally to every available surface. You will be taking a free sample with you when you leave. Those of you who are "pee shy" had better "go" before you leave home & be prepared to hold it. We have 10 cats (I do fostering & will be encouraged to take one with you when you leave) & no one gets privacy (picture all those cats watching your every move). Also please be aware that homemade means there's hair in it (& possibly worse). In other words, you were warned. LOL Linda

When God created Adam and Eve, he placed them in His idea of a paradise, a Garden. I agree with Him. Have you ever read THE DIARIES OF ADAM AND EVE by Mark Twain? You can buy them online. Fatwood is the rosin rich core of certain dead pine trees. It is sold cut up into kindling size. When ignited it burns for quite a time and helps the larger fire logs to start burning. There was a fire on my property several years before I owned it. Some trees fell but were not consumed. After the outer pithy part decayed it left large hearts of pine just lying there due to the rosin content.

Thanks cran for letting us know how it went! From your description, I could picture the setting in my mind. Glad the mugs were a hit. Sometimes the simplest of things can make a difference.

The white mugs on the red antique quilt sound just beautiful! But I too would have been scared to death about that quilt. Congratulations and I'm happy that it all turned out so well.

I am so happy I did the open house even though it was a lot of work. I know you all must think I am crazy using the antique quilt as a table cloth, BUT my mother always used it the same way. It is has a red background and the quilted christmas shaped trees ate dark green. There are some stains on it but it is in pretty good shape and no one spilled! Thanks again and happy holidays!
