Did you shop Home Depot's 75% off Christmas stuff?

I stopped in Home Depot the other night to get some fatfood......LOL that was a typo--I meant to type fatwood, but I thought "fatfood" was pretty funny.

Anyway, they had loads of Christmas decorations at 75% off. I bought some GE commercial grade multicolor icicle lights, a Martha Stewart tree skirt, and some fake tea lights (cheaper than the dollar store!). They even had extension cords at 75% off. I was wishing I hadn't bought several before Christmas.

I ran into a friend who was buying six 48" wreaths for the outside of her house. They were $15 each--regular price $60.

I just realized this post makes it sound as though I never heard of after-Christmas sales. LOL

The thing is, I had shopped Michael's, Walmart, AC Moore, and Target, and didn't find anything I wanted. Home Depot was one of the last places I expected to find such a huge selection of Christmas decorations--and at 75% off.

I think that before this goes any further and gets any more negative a few things need to be pointed out: 1. Everyone has the ability to shop where they want. If you don't like HD, don't go there. 2. DH, who is an upstanding contractor, and I donate A LOT of time and effort to Habitat for Humanity and hardly ever see local vendors donating. The prevailing attitude seems to be: "let them pay for it themselves like everyone else." DH has severed several local business ties because of this attitude, and from reports up and down the east coast several other contractors involved with HfH have done the same thing. 3. Anyone can write a press release and have it published. Letters to the Editor are the general public's opportunity to do this, and, again, when local charities write their "thank yous" for donations. No big PR Department, there. 4. All charitable giving over $250 needs to be reported individually on taxes, and anyone donating over $5,000 to any 501-3(c) organization gets reported immediately. Check the IRS files to see what local places have donated NEARLY as much as the HD's and Lowes of the world. You'll be in for a shock, believe me. 4. It is very well known that the major manufacturers sell their lower-end lines at HD and Lowes and WalMart and a lot of other "big box" stores. If someone doesn't do their homework when buying a piece of equipment that costs several hundreds or thousands dollars, and doesn't realize that it's not the same thing as at a "dealership", shame on them. This lower-end equipment allows consumers to enjoy the same warrantees and service that higher-end equipment carries, without needing to spend the high-end price. Again, it's a matter of consumer responsibility. 5. THIS FORUM IS FOR THE DISCUSSION OF NEW ENGLAND PLANTS and, even with the format change, I'm really disappointed that the thread was not pulled earlier. Any sort of consumer oriented business (ie., the museum gift shop, mom and pop stores, AND DON'T get me started on "local" hardware stores that market themselves as being "local" but are franchised by conglomerates much larger than HD) has its skeletons, and to single one company out defies the spirit of GardenWeb, iVillage notwithstanding. 6. Yes, many governmental agencies and contractors responded to the several natural disasters. Last I knew, it's what they are there for. I suggest that all of you who feel strongly about HD not go there, and let others make their own decision. Spreading negative information doesn't help anyone. Other reasons gardeners stay out of Lowes/Home Depot/Walmart is that the big national chains tend to carry the same plants in all of their stores across the nation (which means that there are plants in these stores that will not do well in your climate), and also they tend to treat their plants like the rest of their merchandise (so their plants are not well cared for, as pansies and nails have radically different requirements.) So for the best plants, go to a local nursery. For rather sturdy things like bulbs the big box stores are fine--better than fine, because they have sales. Although, like their plants, there will be one that don't do as well in your climate. For instance, those "*millions* of tulips" will come back year after year up north, but they're annuals in most parts of Texas. Which is why, if I want tulips, I wait until they go on sale at Lowes... Speaking of which, I wonder if they're open today?

Carrara Marble (Tile Shop) vs. Grecian Marble (Home Depot)

We used quite a bit of the grecian marble (incorrectly spelled greecian on the Home Depot website if you are searching for it). We used 12x12s that we cut into 6x12 bricks, 3x6 that we used in one bath as a herringbone pattern and one bath installed in a subway pattern, 6x6, chair rail and the 1x1 hex on the floor. In one shower we installed the Homedepot river rock/pebble mesh mosaic on the floor. We installed the tile in Feb/March so its been up for almost a year and it looks great. There is, however, a great variation in color. It is not a pure white. Some tiles are almost all gray and some have quite a bit of brown in them. Our installer was fantastic at pulling the out and arranging them so that the colors are scattered. We like the color disparity and movement but that's personal preference. Just don't expect a pure white. We did find several boxes that contained noticably thinner tiles (mostly with the 3x6 tiles). We simply packed these back up (save the little boxes it comes in)and returned them to Home Depot. This is a stocked item at our HD so it was easy to get if we needed more and easy to return. The hex mosaic tile was an online only item and we had a HUGE problem getting it delivered. It was through a freight company and they kept promising it and it wouldn't arrive. This could be just an issue in our area (Cincinnati) but it held us up for about a week. (It arrived two weeks later than promised). If I can figure out how I will post pictures as I think the bathrooms turned out great! No extra maintenance. Just sealed it. We were cautioned by the installer about rust which is impossible to remove from marble (often things like shaving cream cans are still metal and can rust). I'm sure newhomeowner is finished with the project but thought I'd throw in my 2 cents for anyone considering the grecian marble.

Trash 'shopping' and finding neat stuff

I wish we had a scheduled "trash" pickup day like that to get rid of large items. The city will only pick up appliances at the curb only if you call and arrange it. I often put large things at the curb and it isn't long before they are picked up by someone. Every night before garbage day people go up and down the streets in pickup trucks looking for metal and any other perceived "useable" items. LOL I cleaned out my basement and one guy came and took everything including old broom handles. Walking down my street a few years ago I came across a box that had all kinds of items in it. The woman had died and her family threw out some of her knick-knacks they didn't want. I picked up some "blue mountain pottery" figurine pieces which I sold for a good price at my yard sale and a few pieces I kept. My best friend's grandfather put his old unwanted fireplace andirons at the curb of his house more than 50 years ago and my brother David picked them up and brought them home where they have been used the fireplace in this house ever since. I love them and would never get rid of them. When my friend and her parents moved in with their grandfather the only thing I remember their fireplace being used for was for holding their toys box. LOL I wonder if old grandpa closed off his fireplace because a new baby was coming into the house and tossed out the andirons because he wouldn't need them. I see good stuff at the curb on my walks or after yard sales and I wished I knew how to refurbish or refinish. My sister was good at finding things and making them work in her house. Now that I think of it the old shutters that used to be on my house to frame the front door came from someone's garbage and I remember going out with my sister at night and taking them from someone's trash. She sanded and painted them black and they were good as new - something we would never have been able to afford back then. Anne

I love fatwood!! Thanks for the offer, but I bought two bags of it. I sometimes split the larger pieces, using my Martha Stewart Chinese cleaver. I feel like such a semi-backwoods woman! :-)

I didn't get any Christmas decorations after Christmas. I would have liked to but my house has enough decorationsto last for quite awhile. I only put out about 10% of what we own this year.

We bought a few things at Home Depot. One was a huge inflatable Santa in an air balloon, which we will set up on top of our garage (it has a flat roof). Another, a life size animated mailbox that opens and shuts showing cards inside, and the third a set of three lighted gift boxes. All were at 75% off.

No, but I shopped at Target and Hobby Lobby for their 80% off sales for Christmas things. I bought a wreath hanger at Target and at Hobby Lobby several pretty crosses and two doggy ornaments for next year's tree. What are you talking about? Fatfood or Fatwood? :)

Fatwood is the rosin rich core of certain dead pine trees.

It is sold cut up into kindling size.

When ignited it burns for quite a time and helps the larger fire logs to start burning.

There was a fire on my property several years before I owned it. Some trees fell but were not consumed. After the outer pithy part decayed it left large hearts of pine just lying there due to the rosin content.

I did! I stocked up on white "fairy" lights. With the law being passed phasing out incandescent bulbs by 2014, I wasn't sure if this included Christmas lights or not. I really like the look of the small white incandescent over the small white LED. (I know the LED are more efficient and burn cooler, but I'm not thrilled with their look on the tree).

Nope, didn't shop at any of those places and would have liked to but would have to drive 200 mi. round trip to do so and with the price of gas would cost me $30, and that wouldn't save me any money.

No! We went the first week of Dec. to the two that are here. There was NOTHING left of any of the Christmas items. I was not happy. I would like to get the air inflatable nativity for the yard. Glad you got some good bargins.

my after christmas was at sam's club..bought cards there, as our target didn't have much to offer like years past...

usually we're at home depot, all the time but ours seem to run out of goodies really fast! could be cause there are 2 big fancy subs surrounding them, lol...
