How to run water to this fridge

Everyone,

I'm remodeling this kitchen. I have a new smaller stainless fridge. It's on the left hand side just the same as the current fridge. The access to water is on the right side. Do I have to run something through the walls? My thoughts are that I could hit the water along the baseboard by cutting in to the drywall. I'd probably want to use something sturdy light stainless or copper for it. Any ideas?

If you are on a slab,remove the base board and notch the slab with a grinder and come out below the cabinet stile to the left of the DW.
You can use copper or nylon and a bead of caulking on top to hold it in position.

Is the house on a crawl space? If so, it may be easier to go under rather than across the room. While some may scoff, SharkBite (and other, similar fittings) make it easy to install a T and valve in an existing waterline. I really hate soldering over my head in a confined space....

In general you can change the form of the water conveyance through your property as long as you don't change the way it works at the upstream and downstream ends. That is, you could convert the grass to a man-made stream bed, or convert it too a rain garden, or install a drain beneath it, as long as you don't create a condition where water that used to leave the neighbor's yard starts to back up. Similarly, you can't change the location or the amount of water that leaves your yard. For example, you generally can't reroute the water across your yard and release it to the neighbor's yard at a different location that where it goes now unless the nighbor agrees. However, it could take a different path through your yard as long as it ends up in the same place.

We had four kids and two busy parents growing up. We always made enough for everyone to eat. "Leftovers" were divided onto plates, wrapped with Saran, and put in the fridge. As the missing people got home, they heated their plate in the micro or the oven (make sure your plates can go in the oven, and remind everyone to take the plastic wrap off). That way we all ate the same dinner, but could eat it as we needed. Another good thing to do is wash and prepare veggies so they can be grabbed easily. Wash, trim, and cut celery into sticks, peel and cut carrots, etc. These can be eaten as is, with dip, cut a little more to put into stir fry, cut even more and added to salads or other dishes. Other good choices are meals you can "build". Brown and season meat for tacos. Shred the cheese. Wash and shred the lettuce. Chop the tomatoes and the onions. Make spanish style/tomato rice. Put it all in separate containers in the fridge. Then each person can build their own taco, soft taco, burrito, whatever as needed. Scoop some meat onto a taco shell or flour tortilla, zap for a minute or two. Zap a scoop of rice for a minute or two while adding toppings to the heated taco/whatever. Or cook spaghetti noodles and rinse with cold water and put in the fridge. Make your sauce and put it in the fridge. Cut up the stuff for salad and put it in the fridge. Prepare garlic toast, but don't cook it and put it in the fridge. Each person can mix sauce and noodles, heat in microwave while browning the garlic bread in a skillet/toaster oven/broiler, whatever. Soups, stews, and chilis that you can heat as needed (or even leave on the stove on low if the waiting time is not TOO long), fresh bread or rolls, and salad greens are also good. Each person serves themself when they come in.

Not sure what your budget is but if you really want space you could turn the sliding glass door into a single exterior door, and move the kitchen out into the space of half of the removed slider. It would have to be done right, and expensive, but what you are asking about will not work. And you would only be gaining 4-5" vs 3-4 feet. I did that in my old home, I removed the slider put a single Anderson Prehung Metal door in. I framed in a small window next to the new door, yours would be to the right of the door. You keep the pony wall, it would have to be moved out along with the plumbing in the slab, but that is not that difficult (for a contractor). Good luck.

I think what every one is saying, that from your question you are working under the assumption that this is simple and can be done cheaply for a couple of thousand. A couple of thousand that will just get you into the game. I don't know what it is like in your area, but in our area you need a permit for everything and once you have the building permits, you have to get an occupancy permit. Examples of permits you probably will need, Permit to tap into the house water system, sewer permit, Electrical permit. Construction permit. Each permit will have to have a city approved inspection. You may have to get some sort of permit from the power company to increase the amps provided to the house. One of the question that will have to be answer is the current fuse panel in the house large enough for the increase demand made by adding the shed. If this is an older house, the whole thing will have to be resized. This is especially important if you are planning on heat / AC with electricity. If you are going to heat the shed with gas, you will need a permit to tap into the line and extend the line to the shed. None of the items mentioned above even considers that actual cost of labor and materials to do the item. Some items like electrical work, water plumbing, and others must be done by a city authorized and licensed person. Some times it takes different people with different licenses to get the job done. As an example; It you have an AC/Heating unit installed you will need a licensed AC/Heating person, and some on with an Electrical license to get the job done; It there is a gas heater that is another licensed person. We are not trying to be difficult, just trying to help you see the size of the project you want to undertake. In an effort to produce an absolutely safe environment simple jobs become quite complex.

I should have clarified. This is in a condo building. I won't be ripping up the new floor for this. I'd also prefer to minimize damage to the drywall.

Ahhh...this could be a challenge, because you don't actually own the walls. The condo association does.... You own the space between the paint on one wall and the paint on the opposite. Same with floor and ceiling.... Read the condo declaration carefully to see what your rights are and what modifications are legal w/o prior approval from the board.

Run it on the wall, behind the dishwasher and across...on the baseboard. Put it low enough behind the dishwasher so the back doesn't crush it.

Protect the line on the baseboard, either by making a groove for it (I would replace the baseboard, actually), or run it on top of the baseboard, then install another piece of trim moulding above that to protect it. I would not "hide" it.

Something like that.

Tap in to your cold supply -- hopefully near the dishwasher -- with a tee and a shutoff valve for your refrigerator line. Remove the baseboard molding. If there is a gap at the bottom of the sheetrock that can accommodate a 1/4" copper line, slide it in place. If there is no gap, cut out a small trench in the sheetrock for the line. Connect one end of the line to the tee and the other end to the refrigerator. Reinstall the baseboard, being careful to not nail through the new line. Touchup the paint.

Dishwashers have cold supply-lines? None that I've ever owned have.

I've torn the place apart, so the baseboard is gone now. This sounds like the best way to do it given my constraints. Thanks to everyone for their input.
