I can relate. I have no family beyond my husband and daughter, except for a brother, that I never see, and a sister that has never liked me. I have no idea what it is like to be surrounded by a big, loving family. The idea is so foreign to me, that it even seems unappealing.

I almost never cry. A few nights ago, I accidently hurt a baby possum that I was tube feeding. I have done this literally thousands of times and I have never hurt one. I said a prayer for her...I never pray...and I cried. So far she is still living and eating on her own now. I hope she won't get infection and die. I put her on antibiotics.

Sometimes crying is good. Well, often, I think it is.

I also hope you feel better now. Your mother would be so proud of you and your accomplishments.

An *extrememly* strange thing happened to me this morning-I had a dream-a dream about my parents home from 21 years ago..it was so vivid,so real-and yes,it made me miss my parents who have been gone now 10 years

So,do not feel bad for crying at all.....ever.

I can also relate. I have never in my life had anyone love me unconditionally. My parents loved me but certainly not as unconditionally as I love my children.

Like Marilyn I am not a big crier but I do know how cathartic a good cry can be.

No, your not a bit silly, just get that out of your head. I know how you feel since most of my family is gone. I wasn't even very close to them like I could have been. Be happy you had that great relationship with your Mom, not everyone has that, although I know you miss it dearly.

Rose, you are not silly at all. I know how you feel. Losing my only child was such a blow, and then I lost my mother two months ago. I really miss them both. They loved me unconditionally. I still have my father, and we are very close, but he is almost 87, so I don't know how long I will have him. I know it's part of life, but it is a bummer.

I'll just say this, quite the contrary, I'd have to question is you did NOT miss a great lady like that. My mother's been gone nearly 32 years. Great lady who got such a raw deal from life. Call me crazy, pass a straightjacket but I still talk to her occasionally.

I'm not totally sure there is such a thing as unconditional love. At least not from humans. But when I get greeted at the door after work by my fuzzball(s) and they rub against me, I keep wanting to think it's because they missed me. But it could just be that they wanted the dish filled. I'll take the former and stick with that story!

Much of my family is splintered by various things. Now with the actions during my father's estate, or shall I say what little is LEFT of his estate, well when someone says family is everything, don't leave out the negatives either.

I look at it this way. I'm proud of myself, my ethics, morals and things I've done for people and otherwise. Although I sure could have been financially far better off to compromise those principles, I don't know I could live with myself if I had.

Nothing wrong with getting emotional occasionally. Good for you I think. Remember the good times and think of a favorite funny story sometime if you get a little too down. Works for me.

BTW, I decided to go out for supper tonight. On the way out the door, I saw what caused the thumps I heard last night. Had brought in some pet food and stacked it up by the back door. Somebody who shall remain nameless pulled down the TOP bag, opened it up and helped himself. I think it was him, instead of her... They both suggested it was "mice" and mentioned something about calling their lawyer.

I think it is good to have a good cry. these things build up and it is good to just let go, not to have them too frequesntly though but at least crying opens up the heart IMHO
Rose, my Mom's beem gome 25 years and my youngest son for almost 10 and I wish I could have a good cry.

Rosemary, crying jags are cleansing. Just like a rain shower cleans the air, tears cleanse the soul. Missing your mom, knowing that the last person to love you as only a parent can is not silly at all.

I have burst into tears over the silliest of things, only to later realize that it really wasn't because of whatever triggered the tears, it was a build up. The tears were well overdue.

You just adopted a pupster, I don't remember the name but remember that it is a gorgeous little sheltie.....our pets are the other hearts that extend unconditional love to us. No matter what our bank account, the type of car we drive, our religion, or what we did today.....they love us.

Not silly at all, but I'll bet that if you stop and really think about it, there are people in your life right now that love you unconditionally.

I have a husband (and I'm grateful for that), but the fact is, our spouses do not love us unconditionally. There are conditions attached to the marital agreement.
Though I am not married, I have the world's best BF (for a very long time) and feel he loves me quite unconditionally as well as several other best friends I have had for years and years that I am very close to.
I'm confused a bit by your statement.

I cry when I see other people hurting, when I hear a song, when I watch movies...it doesn't take much.

Sometimes I wish I wouldn't but I'd rather be like I am than hard hearted.

Reminds me how much I love my Mom, and I'm fortunate she's still with me and just a phone call away.

Thanks for the kind and thoughtful comments. I do have an elder brother who would do anything in this world for me. He had to grow up fast and become more father-like when my own father took a hike. I need to pause and think about him more often. :-) He's a good guy.

As to spouses, I'm not convinced that husbands can love us unconditionally. I think of a mother's love as an artesian well that is fed and supplied by an inexhaustible source outside of itself. I think of marital love as a tall water tower that can endure some dry weather but must be refreshed and replenished on a semi-regular basis.

There is nothing silly about having a good cry for yourself! If it makes you feel better, do it. Nobody needs to apologize for having feelings and emotions.

I think that actual unconditional love is a very rare thing - perhaps it doesn't even exist. Could you love a child who had no empathy and was horrible to his wife and children, to a daughter who was self absorbed and stole from you and perhaps others due to an "I want" mentality? Could you love a son who was a rapist or a daughter who beat her children relentlessly? Or, a husband who beat you and/or your children? To a man who seemed not to value you? Who repeatedly had affairs?

I think there tend to be conditions to all love relationships and I think that is a very healthy thing.

However, for the more average relationship where nobody is perfect but everyone keeps trying, yes there can exist a love between a parent and a child that is unique and wonderful.

Keep in mind - not everyone gets to have this, you were a very lucky person. Treasure the love your mother gave you - it's not something that is gone simply because she is no longer alive. It's the gift that remains forever alive. So, it's not something that is gone now but remains in your heart forever. You continue to have that love.

I agree with you about a marital situation. I have been married three decades to the same man and we love each other very much but of *course* each of us could dismantle the feelings of love by bad behavior if it lasted for a long enough period of time. This is simply human nature - most of us have limits of what we will accept from another person, and thank God for that. Those who don't, tend to invite physically and emotionally abused existences.

I said the same thing to my husband when my grandfather died. There was no one left who would love me unconditionally. Mom is still alive and I know I made her life harder since I was a suprise. Maybe she wouldn't have married dad and had such a rough life if it weren't for me.
